stefan_kendall3··on SF people, you are hypocrites using services like Uber and Lyft
I was in SF recently. BART is awful.

BART to a restaurant took over an hour. 9 minute walk to the stop, 12 minute wait for the train, 30 minute train ride, 15 minute walk. Even in the best case scenario of 0 train time, that's 19 minutes of walking.

The restaurant had a huge wait, so I used Uber to get back to where I was staying. 1 minute wait, 19 minute drive.

The Uber trip cost $10 more than BART for two people. I don't know how you value your time, but $10 for 50 minutes of time for two people is always worth it.

stefan_kendall3··on Gamma Wave Brain Zaps Induce Lucid Dreaming
I find normal dreaming much more fun. It's like playing Stanley Parable for the first time, instead of of opening Garry's Mod...alone.

I'll pick a Stanley Parable any day over Garry's Mod.

stefan_kendall3··on The case for banning laptops in the classroom.
I used class time mostly as a chance to VPN and work, for the scant amount of time I was actually in class.

I did not give two shits about the lectures; the material is presented better in the book. Professors, from my perspective, were paid to administer tests.

stefan_kendall3··on Apple’s “Handoff” Technology Shows Us the Future of Run-Anywhere Applications
Chrome doesn't even work like that. Web apps can do it, but it's a huge pain in the ass. It looks like apple's going to make the transition a lot easier.
stefan_kendall3··on Bring Reading Rainbow Back
It's against the terms of service to kickstart a business. You need a product. This is a long-term education-sales company, not a specific product of any kind.
stefan_kendall3··on Bring Reading Rainbow Back
Only "underprivileged" schools will get the content for free, which implies they intend to sell the software to schools, which implies business.

You're not supposed to be able to kickstart a business. You shouldn't get a pass just because you're Reading Rainbow and levar burton.

stefan_kendall3··on Show HN: The static, static site generator
I battle this daily. IE9 can barely render its own chrome, let alone content on a webpage.

A couple months back, a certain project I was working on was taking over 45 seconds to render. 45. seconds.

stefan_kendall3··on Bitcoin by analogy
Let's pretend we've issued a bunch of notes we promise we'll redeem for some hard substance, like gold.

What if, now hear me out, we just stop redeeming those notes for gold. Those suckers will be holding nothing but paper.

Money is whatever people agree to exchange.

stefan_kendall3··on Flappy48
Trailing blocks can get stuck and fall off. Clever.
stefan_kendall3··on I’m Single, Therefore I Tinder
Except that negging works. Talking about differences right away makes you seem honest and unafraid of losing the relationship immediately.

The way it's phrased in PUA tutorials is often silly or hyperbolic, but it doesn't mean it's not a fun bridge into conversation that works well on dates or when flirting.

stefan_kendall3··on Apple Claims Mogenerator's Methods
Change the license, exclude apple, and send them a CnD if they use the library going forward.

It's probably faster and more reliable to do this than file a radar.

stefan_kendall3··on A Tipless Restaurant is a Well-Run Restaurant?
I feel like there's a business opportunity here. There is a large group of people who don't want to think about tipping, and would always just tip 20%.

Could a payment system or card do this automatically? Or perhaps legally signal to the server that they should take 20%?

This doesn't seem impossible, and I think the idea has a reasonable market.

stefan_kendall3··on “In a typical year the OpenSSL project receives about US $2000 in donations”
So go work on OpenSSL. Oh wait.
stefan_kendall3··on Anti-Tech Protesters Are Telling Kevin Rose’s Neighbors That He’s A “Parasite”
I'm not writing off "huge swabs". I'm writing off anyone with enough time to form a formal protest but not enough time to do anything with their career but drive cars and wait tables.
stefan_kendall3··on Anti-Tech Protesters Are Telling Kevin Rose’s Neighbors That He’s A “Parasite”
Inspired enough to protest individuals, but not enough to learn the skills needed to be paid the 4x wages they cite the parasites move to SF for.

Imagine if all that rage time was spent learning rails and mobile development.

stefan_kendall3··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
I delete your amusing, yet inspiring and educational comments because they are at best useless and in the way and at worst a potential way to lose a lot of money.

I've seen this one cause an actual, measurable financial loss:

//customer type X cannot purchase product type Y.

The code said another story, but someone trusted the comment. I only trust code.

stefan_kendall3··on Auroracoin – Forked and Game Over
A consortium of businesses could maintain control, with no one entity owning the blockchain. As much fun as it is to think about Joe Farmer with an ASIC or GPU, when there's a $7B+ market cap to tap, real interests will get involved.
stefan_kendall3··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
Broken windows fallacy. I'll leave it to you to figure that out.
stefan_kendall3··on Tesla Strikes Deal To Keep Dealerships In New York
That's called efficiency. When you're just a middle-man adding overhead, technology replaces you.
stefan_kendall3··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the "unpaid overtime crowd"?
You posted this looking for support for what you know you need to do.

Quitting isn't fun, but sometimes it's the only way to solve a problem.

stefan_kendall3··on "Sharing economy" should share its wealth
If you had an HOA, you would. If you're renting, it's not your property to police.

If you want to protect yourself from AirBnB, there are ways to do it.

stefan_kendall3··on Apps with millions of Google Play downloads covertly mine cryptocurrency
Users don't want to pay, and they don't want ads.

The scale has to tip eventually.

stefan_kendall3··on The fallen heroes of virtual reality (2014)
I had no idea redbull ran a media site.
stefan_kendall3··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
This would destroy most of the business models of most of the companies on this website.

I fail to see how a social media company buying a headset manufacturer would even hint at anti-trust.

stefan_kendall3··on You appear to be advocating a new IDE. Here's why it will not succeed
Intelli-J crawls on slow drives. Given ReSharper is also a JetBrains product, I assume the performance characteristics are similar.
stefan_kendall3··on Venice votes 89% to secede from Italy
A prisoner does not ask his warden for release. It would take enough hearts and minds to secede, and nothing else.

How it actually happens and whether or not different commenters find it "legal" will not matter. If I deny your jurisdiction and have the military force to defend myself, your laws do not apply to me.

stefan_kendall3··on Venice votes 89% to secede from Italy
I think California is more likely to split into multiple states before any of them consider secession.

Shaking up the state borders might give a few states pause, though.

stefan_kendall3··on You appear to be advocating a new IDE. Here's why it will not succeed
"SSD" doesn't mean a whole lot. Sata 2 vs PCI Express is an order of magnitude of difference.
stefan_kendall3··on Bonjour, Entrepreneurs – Only you can prevent French-Bashing
I literally just read "You should design for android because they delayed monetization and sold for $19B."

If you're WhatsApp, I doubt it matters how onerous the regulation and taxation is where you operate your business.

stefan_kendall3··on It’s impossible to work your way through college nowadays
Most universities staff up to handle as many students as they wish. They have a glut of students.

In this environment, you would expect more universities to flood the market to capitalize on the high profit, but that isn't happening. There is an excess supply of professors, but not universities.

This might be due to regulation, accreditation, high capital demand, and or the inability to create a lean university that just offered specific curricula. Is it so absurd to think a CS degree could happen entirely online and mostly asynchronously?

I don't think so, but it hasn't happened well yet.

So high barriers of entry + inelastic demand because easy credit = no universities created to drive down price.
