steezeburger··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
That's definitely surprising in this age. Could you change the air conditioner ui to celsius? But changing to kph is not something I expect by default in _every_ car. I do expect a visible clock in every car though.
steezeburger··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
Oh wow. This would make me lose it. I've been increasingly angry lately with enshittification. It's so frustrating and unfair.
steezeburger··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I got a rental the other day and while driving could not find the clock! I had to hit TWO BUTTONS on the infotainment touchscreen panel to get back to "home" and see the gd time. I was driving on curvy roads in Yosemite too. Truly abhorrent.
steezeburger··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Even if it may not have a section on prisons, this is perfectly up my alley. Thank you for the recommendation!

> In person I've hardly met anyone who reads books other than for school assignments.

I know a ton of people in person who read a lot for pleasure, but I'm sure it's kind of self selecting. Are you in college? College was the time in my life I read the least.

Also, while I haven't been to prison, I've been to jail for a short cannabis related stay in the early 2010s. There is just so much less to do there that I ended up reading a whole book (2-300p) every day I was there. Many others had a book, but I'm not sure they were actually reading them. A lot of people in there were reading the Bible or some religious literature. Anyway, just my anecdote.

Have you written more about this kind of stuff? I would love to read more! I find it absolutely fascinating. Prison economics and such. Thanks for sharing.

Edit: just checked your profile and found your blog. Excited to read it! I think I've actually stumbled across your story before now that I see the website. Again thanks for sharing!

Roku sucks. Is that the bar? Can barely do anything on it without an internet connection or Roku account.
steezeburger··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
That is a ridiculous take. It was trained on human notes. It very much has an opinion on how to structure specific content for teaching.
steezeburger··on I don't like passkeys
I had to mess with this just yesterday.

I got a new cell phone and installed Microsoft Swiftkey and tried to login to Microsoft. It said my device's password or security manager would popup, but it never did and it never showed an option to login via password, just a mostly blank screen. I tried logging in from my laptop browser and it immediately tried using a passkey, but I've never created a passkey for Microsoft, so it errored out, still never showing an option for password login. I tried again and it errored out again and FINALLY showed the option to login via password. It had to fail 2 times to finally show the option for password login.

I was finally able to login via password, then had to go to Microsoft's passkey management page to create a new passkey, store it in 1password, and use that on my phone.

I'm a software engineer and it was annoying and time consuming and took a minute to figure out. How are non engineers supposed to even use this crap?

Uh, yeah you can.

steezeburger··on “It works better in the app”
It's the worst on iPhone, because it won't even let me scroll back up to show the button to open the tabs view, I have to switch out of the browser and re-open it to be able to scroll to show.

steezeburger··on Show HN: Echologue – the private AI voice journal I built for myself
I agree with you about the merits of journaling, but I think there is a place for this kind of app still. I don't use this specific app, but I like the idea of a single dumping ground that is sorted and reviewed by AI, but not necessarily for emotional journaling but for a form of data tracking. I mean I do sometimes track my emotions, but I don't ask AI to tell me how I'm doing, though I do ask it if there are any notes that keep popping up and they might be something I need to work on. It's also helpful for managing tasks as someone with ADHD. I don't have to think about sorting notes before I even write them. I still like to journal by hand. My note taking apps aren't replacements for them. They're more for research and data tracking really. I also think it is cool to have historical data around the things you do in general. And voice can be such a frictionless ux. Idk, I see the appeal!
steezeburger··on Show HN: Echologue – the private AI voice journal I built for myself
I like the idea behind this a lot and feel the same way about my notes. I also built my own app for it and have a very similar feature on the roadmap. Cool stuff!
steezeburger··on Show HN: Dowe – A full-stack language for server, web, desktop, Android, and iOS
From the Github README:

> Dowe is a Rust compiler and runtime toolchain for building fullstack products from a unified, declarative source graph. Applications are authored in Dowe Source Format (.dowe), checked against explicit language and platform contracts, and lowered into the artifacts required by each selected target.

steezeburger··on I started a “dirt notebook”
Every daily log is the same as the dirt notebook. It reduces friction when going to create a note because you don't have to think about where to file the note _before_ it's even written. I tag things and can sort them later, if I want, or not. Or can schedule things to loop back into my life (move to the current daily) if I choose. It's the exact same concept as their dirt notebook.

It's not a new concept. Bullet journal, logseq, zettelkasten, org-mode, etc are all inspiration

steezeburger··on I started a “dirt notebook”
I have a similar idea in the note taking app I've written for myself over a couple years. I have a new daily page everyday with a simple but powerful tagging system. Adding automation soon that will be kick ass, but for now the mcp server plus Claude Code is pretty dang powerful. It's basically a clone of logseq with my own features. It's got templates and saved views and powerful filtering. It's been super useful for me personally. I need to update the README though. https://github.com/steezeburger/brainspread/

steezeburger··on The short leash AI coding method for beating Fable
You can only check your email so many times, and you can only work on so many problems at once. You also generally have to be mindful of token consumption. I think it also leads to burnout to work on so much at once. I've been working this way for like a year.
steezeburger··on The short leash AI coding method for beating Fable
I find it hard to stay engaged doing this. I do get good results, but it's just hard to not get distracted when it's doing the work.
steezeburger··on Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1852)
This is why my favorite book is Thinking, Fast & Slow. It blew my mind and totally made me think about almost everything differently.

steezeburger··on The Coming Loop
It's tough if you're somewhere that isn't very meaningful to you beyond the technology. I think there will be an existential shift soon towards more fulfilling work. Maybe I'm naive or that's just what I feel I need for myself.
steezeburger··on Your ePub Is fine
I had that same issue with a Tauri rust app recently. It just ran as fast as it possible could. Made my phone heat up.
steezeburger··on Your ePub Is fine
It was definitely amazing, especially as a creator. It's how I learned to program! Actionscript was my first language. The only thing kinda close to the experience now is Processing. There may have been issues with the tech, but it kickstarted so many creative and engineering professional careers. There were so many good apps and games. It had such a rich ecosystem.

Yeah that would be great. I seriously don't understand how a company with this much money doesn't have some of the more basic ux implemented to make it a really great app. Blows my mind.

steezeburger··on Show HN: I made a 3D pose maker for artists
Does it just make it easier to get in a position you want or does it give you more natural looking positions as well or any other benefits? It's pretty fun to play with!
steezeburger··on AI is making me dumb
I've had pretty good luck with using playwright mcp to test web front ends. I think LLMs can totally test GUIs. Either via vision and computer control or via reading the GUI node tree (e.g. DOM) used by whatever you built the GUI with.
