steelbrain··on Ethiopia gets $350M World Bank financing for its digital ID project (2024)
Maybe Estonia? I was an e-resident and was really impressed by the digitization of the government systems (and non-government ones too! They inter-op) in Estonia.
steelbrain··on Magical Mushroom – Europe's first industrial-scale mycelium packaging producer
For the curious: https://www.reddit.com/r/mushroomID/
steelbrain··on Did a celebrated researcher obscure a baby's poisoning?
> Does no one care that this is potentially a murder case?

Did we read the same article? Why are you so quick to jump the gun here?

> Koren obtained a sample of Rani’s breast milk, which she had kept in her freezer. His lab measured its morphine concentration at eighty-seven nanograms per millilitre.

If this is in the breastmilk, it will end up in the stomach, and it may end up in gastric contents. I don't understand this urge to demonize the parents, who on top of having lost a child, have to stand these witchtrials.

steelbrain··on Quickemu: Quickly create and run optimised Windows, macOS and Linux VMs
> I'm a little confused as to why projects like this support macOS since at a minimum it's a TOS violation.

As others have pointed out, emulating macOS is only a ToS violation if done on non-Apple hardware, and this tool supports macOS. There is a legitimate usecase of running macOS VM on macOS.

Sure, you could use some apple-provided emulation tool instead of QEMU but that's a matter of choice, not a violation of ToS.

steelbrain··on iOS allows alternative browser engines in Japan
While its not Firefox, you can run uBlock origin with the Orion browser from the Kagi people.
steelbrain··on Google's year in review: areas with research breakthroughs in 2025
Forgive me for not understanding, but assuming you use unique passwords on every account/website, and get a breach notification, wouldn't that breach password only be on that one website/account and would thus take nowhere near 6 hours?

What am I missing?

steelbrain··on Memory Safety
The mentions of curl on this website are misleading and/or outdated. Curl is dropping the rust/hyper backend. See https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/12/21/dropping-hyper/
steelbrain··on The missing standard library for multithreading in JavaScript
This is incredible! The SharedJsonBuffer got me all excited!

Writing module bundlers in Javascript had diminishing returns from multi threading because of the overhead of serializing and deserializing ASTs.

I wonder how far something like this would push the ceiling. Would love to see some benchmarks of this thing hauling ASTs around.

steelbrain··on GoSign Desktop RCE flaws affecting users in Italy
First I’m hearing of it, got a source?
steelbrain··on EU Plans $371B Build-Out of High-Speed Rail Corridors
Ah yes, The European Solution. Tax the better method until it’s at least as bad as the worse method.
steelbrain··on Ventoy: Create bootable USB drive for ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI Files
Love Ventoy! I never have to flash my USBs anymore. Just keep dropping those ISO files in there. Highly recommended.
steelbrain··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
Unrelated to the discussion at hand but information for people that game stream on their Apple Devices: If you experience unexplained stuttering, change the 5ghz wifi channel to 149.
steelbrain··on Unpacking Cloudflare Workers CPU Performance Benchmarks
Hello! How are you collecting your edge workload to the database? Are you using cloudflare’s database?

I’ve wanted to try out this edge hosting thing but because of the amount of round trips involved between the application and the database, the application performs worse on the edge.

Thanks!

steelbrain··on AMD’s RDNA4 GPU architecture
Went down the MI300A rabbit hole that was just casually mentioned in this post (https://chipsandcheese.com/p/inside-the-amd-radeon-instinct-...). What a fun chip! (and blog!)
steelbrain··on One Third of the Web Will Stop Working in 4 Days
Forgive my optimism here but this seems overblown and trivial to detect and reject in firewalls/cdns.

Cloudflare most recently blocked a vulnerability affecting some php websites where a zip file upload contains a reverse shell. This seems plain in comparison (probably because it is).

This sensationalist headline, that doomsday style clock (as another poster shared) makes me question the motives of these researchers. Have they shorted any CDN stocks?

steelbrain··on Trying to send a sticker in Steam Chat burned through a month of mobile data
I’m out of the loop here. What does gambling here refer to? Is it the Steam trading cards?
steelbrain··on Andreessen Horowitz Leaves Delaware for Nevada, Tells Startups to Follow
Curious, what part specifically about the debanking bit was a lie?
steelbrain··on XAI data center gets air permit to run 15 turbines, but imaging shows 24 on site
> just pump it into the lungs of the local population

Source please? I'm not aware of this

steelbrain··on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?
Unrelated to the contents of the article, but I really like how the layout of the blog's comments is very similar to that of HN. Functional. Minimalistic.
steelbrain··on Microsoft is moving antivirus providers out of the Windows kernel
> forced HDCP

Fly-by, but HDCP is already cracked. There's no shortage of HDCP strippers from AliExpress; although they use clever marketing terms to avoid spelling out the fact (presumably to avoid legal troubles)

steelbrain··on Microsoft is moving antivirus providers out of the Windows kernel
Excited for this and the anti-cheat systems moving out of the kernel. This should/would make it easier to emulate them on systems like Proton on Linux and thus push the world one step closer to having cross-platform (Windows, Linux, macOS?) multiplayer gaming. But maybe I'm too optimistic :)
steelbrain··on Apple has announced its final version of macOS for Intel
The “gaming focused functionality” mentioned in the parent post is probably referring to Game Porting Toolkit, which builds on top of wine. So no, It doesnt seen like Wine will die just yet
steelbrain··on High-quality OLED displays now enabling integrated thin and multichannel audio
This is a long shot but anyone know if there's an audio recording of the sound the display produced? Curious

Edit: Found it: https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/advs.20...

Go to supporting information on that page and open up the mp4 files

steelbrain··on We can no longer run Microsoft Store on 1809/LTSC 2019
In Windows terminology LTSC = Long-Term Servicing Channel

which is similar to

Ubuntu, Node.js etc calling it it LTS = Long Term Support

steelbrain··on Business co-founders in tech startups are less valuable than they think
I don't man, I am fairly technical and have failed solo startups several times because I'm not good at the selling part (and I guess by extension build what people want). So in my limited experience, a co-founder that can sell well is really valuable.
steelbrain··on Walled Gardens Can Kill
> Is the Android version of the app in question not region locked on Android?

It probably is, I didn't check. I was able to grab the APK and install it directly

steelbrain··on Walled Gardens Can Kill
The login button redirects you to a page with a QR code for the application: https://www.nextcarehealth.com/download-lumi/

Or maybe I'm missing something, did you actually find a Login form there?

steelbrain··on Walled Gardens Can Kill
With Google, as another posted has pointed out, you can use services like apkpure and grab the apk and install it directly, thereby bypassing such restrictions
steelbrain··on Walled Gardens Can Kill
Here's the company (that manages the "frontend") for ours and a bunch of other insurance companies: https://www.nextcarehealth.com/

I couldn't find their Lumi / web based login. Maybe you can help me find it!

Mobility decisions are often dictated by visa-policies for people with weak passports (which is a big chunk of the world population). UAE, with all its flaws, is a lot more accessible than other countries may be
