stedaniels··on I Got Access to My Secret Consumer Score
Not when these new automated systems don't allow for a follow-up because it would be too expensive to code or hire a human to do it.

That's not really what I was getting at. I've implemented the password lookup before. That protects users from setting passwords that have already been compromised.

The scenario I was looking at was..

User signs up with Site A with Password 1.

User signs up with Nest with Password 1.

Site A gets compromised.

Nest couldn't know if you'd used the same password on each site. The only way they could know is if they used the same hashing algo with the same salt or SHA-1 with no salt. Highly unlikely.

I suppose Nest could check the Pwned Passwords API every time they logged in, but I haven't seen anyone deploy that yet, IIRC all solutions I've seen check Pwned Passwords API when the set the password. Setting a password and checking a password are often different systems.

Which displays ads next to the search results, which makes MS money. Coincidence? I think not.

Though as Hanlon's Razer said: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Part of me wants Microsoft to be so evil they have deliberately made the start menu search so impossibly poor that you end up opening a web search half the time and making them money. But I know deep down, that they are just incompetent and can't be bothered with the desktop anymore.

To make money so those tax dollars have been soundly invested?

To protect the invention from commercial patents?

Sounds sensible to me.

1. Any short or long-term strike action would hurt the protestors more than the government due to lack of food and welfare.

2. Violence against Pro government folk is bad. However there has also been a lot of documented instances of Pro government forces being dressed as protestors and sparking violence.

From what I've seen it all started remarkably peaceful and had since been escalated to a position where the government has free rein. Not something the protestors wanted.

At a point in time, simply writing in your villages native tongue and posting it around the world could have afforded the same benefits. Private communication has been the cornerstone of civilisation for many hundreds and thousands of years and will do for many more to come. I should not be vilified for my want of privacy.

stedaniels··on Oracle’s Larry Ellison Calls Uber and WeWork ‘Almost Worthless’
TIL! I always thought they just pretended they were ridesharing because you were sharing with the driver who just happened to be going the way you asked them to.

Goes off to see just how prevalent real ridesharing is on the platforms

stedaniels··on Oracle’s Larry Ellison Calls Uber and WeWork ‘Almost Worthless’
Neither Uber nor Lyft are really ridesharing. They are ride hailing apps. Unless you are sharing with other passengers? I didn't realise they offered this?

stedaniels··on Clarifying ProtonMail and Huawei
I don't use ProtonMail but this seems like a fairly fundamental issue rather than a personal pet peeve. In my naivety, it also seems like the kind of issue that would cause considerable pain in developing countries who might likely have spotty internet connections, which would lead them straight into said issue.

So whilst it might have been meant callously, from my third party glance it seems quite important.

But to an AI, a certain situation has millions of data points, it's very rare for a certain situation to reoccur. Similar types and classes of situations? You betcha. But they'd be handled based on other data points as well.
stedaniels··on Verified by Twilio
I'm in the UK and have had the same number for a decade or so, I probably get one a year? They are mainly from foreign companies. If said countries also had our regulations, and a sharing agreement in place, it wouldn't be an issue.

stedaniels··on I “found” the database of a college app (2018)
This is mind boggling. Failing someone for missing one or two classes is ludicrous, but giving someone a certificate who didn't engage with the course is equally so. University education isn't about the destination/exam it's about the journey.
stedaniels··on I “found” the database of a college app (2018)
I'm not sure if you are in the industry, but attendance tracking is high up on most institutions lists of metrics to track. Aside from helping out the usual back office data, it's often a key indicator for students who are in trouble. The institution can then reach out and assist these students.
stedaniels··on Hack the Box – Pentesting Labs for Free
The clue is on the page... "Feel free to hack your way in :)" Should take you a moment or two if that's your mind set, a little longer if you need to brush up on your JavaScript, or a little quicker if you Google a walkthrough :-)
