steamboiler··on Erlang MMORPG Engine
Thanks. Checking it out presently.
steamboiler··on Erlang MMORPG Engine
I recently got introduced to Erlang and have a question. How do you unit test your code? I recall reading that the CouchDB author was obliged to use JavaScript for automating his unit tests. What was your experience?
steamboiler··on Ask HN: How do I regain my attention span?
+1 on the musical instrument/practice part.

Music practice/recital also serves to prepare you for a long day ahead or de-stress you at the end of one.

steamboiler··on The Next Generation Bends Over
I was amused to see this comment on HN, a site run by Paul Graham.
steamboiler··on The Next Generation Bends Over
Unfair comparison. I never said it was easy to clone Mint or tried to trivialize Mint's achievements. On the contrary I emphasized the word "relatively". My argument was that Yodlee is the senior partner in the Mint-Yodlee collaboration. I am also guessing here that Intuit has far more access to financial data (banks as well existing quicken databases) than Mint-Yodlee.

EDIT: rephrased for clarity.

steamboiler··on The Next Generation Bends Over
From a comment posted on the blog: "You may not realize how fragile Mint was. All the hard part was being done by Yodlee.com; Mint simply built a thin layer over Yodlee, and collected affiliate fees. Mint was not built for the long haul, it was built to flip. (Check out the free yodlee.com to see that this is true.)"

I think this point is important. Mint was adding value to an existing set of services rather than creating from scratch. This made its offering relatively easier to replicate. IMHO this point is not given adequate importance when considering why Mint chose to sell.

steamboiler··on How PHP became such a huge success - Talk with Rasmus Lerdorf
I like to add automated tests for any application I write. These are mostly to prevent regression and to maintain sanity. Python makes this easy (as do the popular Python web frameworks such as Django). Do correct me if I am wrong, but I do not see the same importance given to automated unit testing in the PHP world. This leaves those who do want to automate tests with fewer choices of tools and accessories.
steamboiler··on At This Point, I’d Prefer Java Developers Over .NET
That is an apt way to describe corporate programming. A friend suggested that it is more like "a slave talking about his new shovel" but let us be diplomatic here ;)
steamboiler··on Overview of interesting problems facing offshore wind turbines
Summary of interesting bits: transmitting power is (relatively) easy; so is mooring the turbine (prior experience with oil drilling). Access to the turbine for maintenance is not straightforward even in fair weather. Traditional tall turbines not a good fit - need turbines that are closer to the surface to tap surface winds.
steamboiler··on Dropping Django
"We are now using SqlAlchemy via schema reflection; no declarative layer." (emphasis mine)

What next? Will web development come full circle to using raw SQL queries like Phil Greenspun suggested years ago? (Not that there is anything wrong with it)

steamboiler··on Chart of YC companies' hosting decisions
Does choice of hosting provider figure in selection of startups? Will one startup get preference over another otherwise equal startup if the former is (not) using a particular hosting provider/mail/registrar?

Is it just me or has this bug been addressed after the parent comment was posted? The page (as I see it) does not require horizontal scrolling any longer.
steamboiler··on China bans Youtube
I wonder if this has any connection to the huge popularity of the "grass-mud horse" online, particularly on youtube?

steamboiler··on The next generation of mirrors
Does anyone know why? Just a wild guess, could it be possible that drivers might get distracted with too much visual information?
