std_throwaway··on Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
Good thing that the internet was built for redundancy so single cuts don't affect the connectivity.
std_throwaway··on There's no limit to longevity, says study that revives human lifespan debate
It means that they found data not agreeing with the model of limitless increase of mortality with age. This is just a statistical observation, not physics yet, not by a long shot.
std_throwaway··on Tesla opens the Model 3 reservation floodgates
They probably made 1000 bets on how to do things and won 99% of them - the remaining 10 steps turned out to be manufacturing nightmares. If they knew beforehand what wouldn't work (and you never know that beforehand but afterwards it's easy to point out) they would have designed their manufacturing line differently. Now they lose a lot of time, need more space and workforce but probably will get there anyways if money doesn't run out in the meantime.
std_throwaway··on Tesla opens the Model 3 reservation floodgates
That's a good point. Most critical parts would be Tesla exclusive without a 3rd party manufacturer for replacement parts that you have for the cheaper models of conventional cars.

Could this be a delay due to waiting for moderation approval?
std_throwaway··on Are You a 10x Programmer? Or Just a Jerk?
Donald Knuth's contributions are probably 3x of the average. You could easily hire three average computer scientists to do his work...

...or maybe there is something to the "myth" that some people contribute extraordinary achievements in a their field.

std_throwaway··on Are You a 10x Programmer? Or Just a Jerk?
Probably because that project is just a lot of average difficulty work that has to be done.

Did your project ever run into obstacles where >50% of the previous work had to be thrown out?

std_throwaway··on Are You a 10x Programmer? Or Just a Jerk?
> You can't possibly know that for a fact.

That's the nature of this beast.

std_throwaway··on Are You a 10x Programmer? Or Just a Jerk?
In my view, being 10x highly depends on selecting the right problems. People usually can only breathe so much air or type so many words per minute. It's hard to get up to 10x if that's what you are measured by. But if you are challenged with a hard problem where most others will fail completely or barely succeed after several tries, you can really shine. It's very important that you can successfully select such hard problems and not get bogged down with the daily grind of average difficulty problems.

The downside is that if you solve hard problems without breaking any sweat, most people won't notice at all. In order to not only perform 10x but also get rewarded 10x you need additional skills of playing politics and marketing yourself.

std_throwaway··on Intel and the Danger of Integration
I'd say this is a myth unless you have actual numbers.
std_throwaway··on Intel and the Danger of Integration
If you compare energy per calculation intel server processors readily beat ARM server processors. When under constant high load, intel processors surely aren't bad in regards to power consumption. So that can't be it.

Maybe it's more about peak performance vs. average power consumption under very low load as you usually have in a mobile phone that's only used occasionally. For example when starting an app and scrolling you need very high performance but the rest of the time the CPUs are mostly idling.

std_throwaway··on The Machine Fired Me
> and went home

Did your boss send you home? If not, you should probably stay and be ready for work assignments (even if they don't come). For good measure contact some colleagues each day so they remember you and take a picture before you enter and after you leave.

std_throwaway··on Fatalities vs. False Positives: The Lessons from the Tesla and Uber Crashes
If you try to account for it, it's not much time at all. And you're improving traffic flow by providing a means to change lanes (a bit more) safely. Most people "cutting in front" are actually just in search for a spot.
std_throwaway··on Fatalities vs. False Positives: The Lessons from the Tesla and Uber Crashes
Mostly because they use the heuristic of "see, nothing happened last time" and do it again but with a little less safety margin.

Free speech also means that others have the right to say the things you don't want to hear.
std_throwaway··on Reddit partial outage
The upvote/downvote-system by itself seems like a bad idea in regards of free speech. You'll end up with the largest group agreeing to each other and upvoting each other thereby silencing (and driving away) other groups. The votes themselves take almost no energy and simple puns get showered in upvotes while long and well thought-out but slightly unusual posts die in the desert.

If you go with the voting system alone with moderate moderation you'll probably always end up with mediocre content that is easy to consume by a majority of your users. Depending on your users you'll get funny cat gifs or ever repeating racist jokes.

The subreddits seem to help a bit since they filter users by interest first and employ strict moderation throughout but after they reach a certain threshold they, too, seem to go downhill fast.

I have no solution but the effortless vote system doesn't sound like such a good idea after all these years.

It's like a beautiful lake gone bad where the dead fish swim on top. Sad but true, it's hard to find anything worthwhile even though there is no real barrier of contributing. It doesn't have to be this way but now it is.
std_throwaway··on Reddit partial outage
Voat once was very similar to reddit of the past before hoards of reddit users were driven away by strict moderation policies and found refuge in the free speech advocating site that voat is. It reflects what those think who are not allowed to speak on reddit.

Sadly, that beautiful garden is now overgrown by heaps of ugly weeds and you have to dig deep to find the nuggets.

std_throwaway··on Reddit partial outage
https://voat.co/ is still running. Similar design but different people. That site could use some love.

Edit: People seem to think that I would endorse the things that are posted on voat. I do not. But I do endorse free speech even if it means that others express things I don't agree with or wouldn't want to hear. Voat does so, too. You can discuss your topics and views on voat. If nice people gain the majority the ugliness will have to stay in the dark corners.

std_throwaway··on Tesla short sellers lose $1B
The point is a lower barrier of entry because anyone can just buy your stock and therefore a larger pool of potential investors. The downside is that the mass of those investors (on average) are not as well informed as a few select big investors. This gave Tesla a great amount of money to work with as long as their star was shining but now it could backfire badly.
std_throwaway··on Tesla short sellers lose $1B
Thanks.
std_throwaway··on Tesla short sellers lose $1B
The company itself seems to be in a downward spiral getting hit from multiple sides. To me it's unclear if they'll make it.
std_throwaway··on Tesla short sellers lose $1B
If there's enough money believing in the company the stock price doesn't really matter. They will hold as long as they believe the company has a chance to pay out (far) in the future. It's less a publicly traded stock and more a long term investment.

The market doesn't follow the news. The news follows the market. If it's on TV it's already too late.
std_throwaway··on Weird neutrino excess won’t go away, hints at new physics
You need to compare it to the expected error rate.

If you expect for example 100 detections due to noise but you get 1000 detections in the measurement, that would be pretty significant.

std_throwaway··on Microsoft’s GitHub Acquisition – An Unbiased Analysis
If someone says they are unbiased, they are simply compensating for (or hiding) the biases they themselves notice.
std_throwaway··on AMD Zen 2 Update: 7nm EPYC in Labs Now, Launching in 2019
What i read was: The instruction decoder would become easier but the instruction decoder is only a small part. Most rare commands are implemented via microcode anyways, so silicon area is not hit too hard. x86 is somewhat efficient due to compact encoding compared to IA64 for example. There is surprisingly little to gain.

Maybe somebody who really knows the details can chime in :)
