staz··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
> If an autonomous car don't let me run over someone it's not really a car.

... do we even need n-gate anymore?

staz··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
To save you a web search : Red Hat 6 was relased 6 November 2010. Roughly 1 year after Window 7, which ended support 2 weeks ago.
staz··on Switching to a four-day workweek (2021)
Why five ? why not a seven day week?
staz··on Thank you, GitHub
it's `cd $_` with the underscore, it repeat the last argument.

staz··on The 74,000 numbers of Barclays Bank
I think the intuition is that a lot of these phone number come in ranges, so it would not be a regex but multiples? But yeah seems easier to just encode the ranges, than some complex system to create the most minimal regex.

edit: checked the comments of the original post and they apparently used perl to produce a 11kb regex.

staz··on Ask HN: What problem are you close to solving and how can we help?
meld can compare two directory if they have the same structure and name for files but can't really tell if I inside my foot folder, I have a folder root/X which is also present as root/category/b/X. (except all the file in it have been prepended by "foo" somehow)

For tools which can find differently names files you have for examples: fslint (gui) or fdupes (cli)

staz··on Ask HN: What problem are you close to solving and how can we help?
this more like a tool suggestion request, because I haven't been able to find a solution in Google.

I'm looking for a more advanced duplicate files finder in Linux, specially one that can handle folders.

Most tool just return a list of duplicate files, but what I need is to also know is if whole folders are duplicate, or subset of others and have it presented in an elegant way t o resolve conflict. ofc everything is in a big folder and everything is a mess, bit of a hoarding collection of files that got accumulated over the years.

I could probably code some stupid script myself, if I ever got the time (spoiler I probably won't) but I have no idea on how to present the result elegantly. So it would be nice if such tool already existed.

staz··on Element raises $30M to boost Matrix
Mainly messages getting delayed or undelivered (often on the IRC bridge), everything getting randomly very slow, encryption randomly breaking... sadly what I consider the usual for Matrix.

I recently had a particularly vexing issue in a small encrypted room of 3 people, new messages were shown as undecrytable and then only readable a few hours later, we never figured out why.

I re test it every few months/years because I hear it's getting better, the server is properly configured now, encryption system was remade, there is a new client, etc...

Losing my whole chat history each time made the endeavor even more frustrating. I know not everyone keep logs but I can search my Mails and Irc logs from 20 years ago and I find it really useful.

Sorry for the rant but since you asked. Like I said I fully support your work on Matrix, I just find it so ... frustrating and it make me sad because I really like the idea.

staz··on Element raises $30M to boost Matrix
> Every single time matrix comes up, people make this argument

it's often the same group of people too... Andrew_nenakhov "forgot" to mention it but he develops a XMPP client and likes to pop up in the comments ofpost on Matrix to complain

edit: I'm not really taking a side on either XMPP or Matrix, I wish for both to succeed but I'm currently disappointed by both. I'm just getting a bit tired of XMPP fanboys spewing FUD every time Matrix is mentioned

staz··on Give me /events, not webhooks
so someone told you he was prejudiced against, you respond with more prejudice and then you pretend it's his attitude that colored your perception. Are you for real?
staz··on Audacity Forked
Apparently the news and context that I missed is that Audacity was bought by a company that plan to monetize it. With paying option and cloud stuff apparently? can't find a source for that part in english.

staz··on Linux Rust Support
Anyone feel like we get a "Linux Rust support" post every month lately?

Feels a bit like the "new more efficient battery technology" recurring post.

edit: to precise it's not that I'm not supportive of the effort, just that it would be nice to just have a post when it's actually merged. The title is a bit deceptive

staz··on Freenode ops take control of 700 channels
the problem is that it is the matrix.org team that can do the bridging, not the Libera folks
staz··on Freenode IRC operators now engaging in routine abuses of power
the concern is more about the impersonation.

It's like you had mysite.com, decided to rename it to a new domain and so put a redirect. And then the CEO of the DNS authority decided to take your domain for himself, put a copy of your previous site on it and pretended that you never moved it in the first place.

staz··on Welcome to Libera Chat

> Hi all. The IRC network is currently experiencing technical difficulties, likely a result of a massive influx of people. We're working on fixing it.

all the people migrating from Freenode it seems

staz··on Welcome to Libera Chat
it easier to change what server you connect to in your client, especially if all the channels you connect to move over, than to adopt a new protocol/client/ etc..
staz··on Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders
Very few people can choose directly to work more or less to gain accordingly. Even freelancer may have some leeway but it's quite limited.
staz··on My simple GitHub project went viral
... wait, what?

I use the sort function of a standard library because it has been written by seasoned devs, reviewed, rewritten; use known algorithms and practices; and being part of a well known standard library it has a chance of still being maintained, distributed and available ten years from now on.

I don't know how you can even remotely compare that to an unmaintained code dump that someone made as a learning experiment over the week.

I'm not dissing on theses kinds of code release, they are great to learn from, but I would find it a bit foolish to base your whole product on it.

staz··on Ask HN: As a startup do you employ good people over passionate ones?
"good" can mean a lot of things. did you mean more competent?

> the ones who are really interested in what we are doing i.e they would still work even if they aren't on payroll

do you mean the one that aren't competent enough to get interesting job that are paid?

staz··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship

staz··on Flutter 2
I would even add this XKCD. https://xkcd.com/1174/

Or even translating...

Try putting their demo website in Google Translate or even try to select the text on an email in their demo webmail app to copy paste it in google translate ....

staz··on WhatsApp to move ahead with privacy update despite backlash
or Google Talk and Hangout
staz··on Facebook sued for ‘losing control’ of users’ data
IIRC the issue with CA was that a friend could share my data without me knowing. It could have been data that I uploaded and not my friend (and maybe the friend didn't even know the existence of this data).

I remember Facebook permissions for Apps in the past were quite laxes. I wonder even if theren't were data accessible to apps that were not visible from the browser interface.

staz··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend $1000 to improve your productivity?
Far from the whole $1000 but I bought a monitor arm and a second screen. I really like the monitor arm, as it allows me to use more space on my desk.

I also bought a Bluetooth headset but I'm considering buying a real, big microphone to ease meetings.

staz··on When did “disturb” became the default mode?
there is a difference being waken up by the thing you choose to be on-call for and being waken up in the middle of the night by a random application because fuck you that's why
staz··on Amazon's anti-union site for its Alabama warehouse
everybody seems to be talking about wages negotiation but let's remember that some Amazon employees had to pee in bottles. It's easier to collectively bargain for toilets to be better located (though it's sad that you have to)
staz··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
Sorry to add to the pile of comments, but I really recommend you watch a couple of video on cutting technique (like five minutes longs video, no need to nerd the whole thing out). Not only having all your fingers is good, but knowing you are safe will empower you to progressively raise the speed of your movements. It's a skill, you get better with time and practice.
staz··on Seagrass 'Neptune balls’ sieve millions of plastic particles from water
A lot of the microplastics in ocean come from Fishing nets.
staz··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
There is Yunohost https://yunohost.org/#/ which is a open source project, whose goal is exactly that, personal server for everyone, with popular services that you can install from a web interface and that you can run on a dedicated server or a Raspberry pi like computer.

There is also nextcloud which is more a all in one product.

staz··on James Gunn (1923-2020)
hackers are more interested in SciFi than sport, shouldn't really come as a surprise. As a non American, no idea who both were.

edit: but James Gunn look more interesting to me I would say. Also Kobe Bryant was apparently major news in the US, and this site is more about alternative, more obscure or specific news. Authors don't get celebrated enough compared to sport celebrities in my opinion
