I'm Stavros. If you need to contact me, my email is stavros at stavros dot io. If you email me, mention "aubergine" in the subject so I know it's not spam. Also, LLM-written emails get marked as spam.

My website, where I write about the projects I work on, is https://www.stavros.io.

I'm also @stavros on Twitter.

stavros··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
I disagree, but think that there's a specific way to use AI to write. I use AI to get critiques on my writing, but never want it to actually produce text for me. I experimented with this by making https://www.writelucid.cc, and I really like it, I use it for all my writing nowadays.

Getting comments on specific sentences/passages and being able to debate them has been great for my thinking, and I've learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work while writing with it.

I was, yep! Parts costs/general inflation.

stavros··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash Is Now Our Best Hacking Model
DS 4.1 Flash did manage to hack my watch:

https://github.com/skorokithakis/amazfit-neo-hacks

Unfortunately, it made a mistake and bricked it. I handed over to Astra but noticed that my watch was dead, it must have died immediately before. Too bad, unlucky me.

Lucid only lets the AI give notes, not change your text: https://www.writelucid.cc/

But I still find that I have to consciously fight the urge to sound like an LLM. It's terrible.

Command + up/down is pg up/pg dn. Command + left/right is home/end.

I switched to iPhone for 2-3 months but the keyboard was so back I switched back to Android. If Apple can't get a keyboard (any keyboard!) to work in a decade, I'm going to an OS that works.

It's crazy that SwiftKey was terrible too, even though it's the one I use exclusively on Android.

I'm loving that "European" is a selling point now, but yes, agreed. Lichess is a gem.

GenZ English is at least understandable, it's wild, we're so cooked.
stavros··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
I think this is pretty recent, I'd never heard of it before. I even got a new phone a month ago and didn't notice this being an option.

It's not poaching to post an ad that someone who works elsewhere happens to see.

It's so refreshing to see that there used to exist authors other than Claude.
stavros··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
It was saying it can't tie the calibration results to a device, because it doesn't know the MAC address (I never asked it to look at the MAC address, it way overengineered things).

It also couldn't see the UART communication and could only see the web API endpoint, hence the rest of the slop.

stavros··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
It wasn't, it was saying it hadn't looked at the UART because it only had access to the web API.
stavros··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
Well, whatever its thinking block looks like, this is when it was talking to me. I suspect you're right, though, I think it thinks it's thinking.

It seems like it doesn't have enough of a theory of mind to know that other people don't think exactly like it thinks.

stavros··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
Astra told me yesterday:

> The run baseline was captured without a physical MAC; the current device is not durably bound to it.

> Engineering mode confirmation is the ESPHome component read-back; the LD2410 UART acknowledgement is not observed, so this is not proof the radar itself applied the sensitivity change.

No clue what the fuck any of it means.

stavros··on How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of Signal chats
This helps put my mind at ease, thanks.
stavros··on How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of Signal chats
I donate too, monthly (and subscribed to backups, even though I don't need them), but some more transparency in their finances would be good.
stavros··on How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of Signal chats
I'm also worried about that these days. They posted an article a while back that Signal costs $50m per year to run, and that they make that money from "things". Together with how low a profile they keep, I'm not convinced they aren't a honeypot.

I love Signal and it's still my preferred messenger, but if it came out that they're backed by some government agency, I wouldn't be extremely surprised.

Oh, I enabled that myself.
stavros··on Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting
No, mine stays disabled and there's no way to enable it. It's just a label that says "disabled". Not sure why, maybe some sort of company wide profile?
stavros··on Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting
If it didn't do anything, they wouldn't keep re-enabling it.
