status200··on Apple expands Self Service Repair to Mac notebooks
As someone who has repaired Apple devices over the years, swearing under my breath each time they put new hurdles in the way, it is so refreshing to see a full repair manual for my relatively new phone [0]. Lots of negativity in the comments but it is so relieving to see Apple change course and lift the curtain.

Also adding to the anecdotes with my own: I have never needed a case for my phones or computers, and have barely even scratched the shell. I go on adventures for a good portion of the year and still manage to keep it intact, so i scratch my head when people say they break easily or that they always shatter their screen, it really seems to go beyond accidental damage and stray into carelessness.

status200··on Why is the OpenBSD documentation so good?
The OBSD docs are good... if you know what you're looking for and are familiar with UNIX already. For a beginner, they are cumbersome, hidden, and annoying to parse.

Good docs look like Tailscale[0] and that similar style where it has the Getting Started at the beginning, along with a nice menu tree on the side that gives an overview and provides easy navigation. You shouldn't need to know what you are looking for when you are learning a platform.

status200··on Show HN: I made a writing tool that asks questions like Socrates
Google sign in only? Not a fan, but seems like an interesting idea.
status200··on As an artist I am concerned about AI image generation
I think the tweet author is missing the meat and focusing on the gravy - they themselves indicate that the AI just replicates existing styles, so it will only ever produce existing art styles with the signature AI blurry weirdness on the details.

A main hallmark of breakthrough artists is inventing new styles and making them their own, a feat that AI has yet to perform very well (unless you include the aforementioned blurry telltales of generation and scrambled letters). Otherwise artists are just borrowing ideas from each other anyway so AI removes the need to learn someone else's style to replicate it.

In my opinion it will hurt the bottom tier of artists, but the ones who create new styles along with their own works will continue to thrive.

status200··on The layoffs at Klarna
It is unfortunate that people lost their jobs, but is anyone else not upset that a "buy now, pay later" company is struggling? They are exacerbating consumer's reliance on credit and causing some reckless spending, I personally believe they do more harm than good.
status200··on Incident report: Employee and customer account compromise
This is the exact same phishing attack that i see on many retail stores that i consult, and i have yet to see any of them fall for it. Smaller surface, sure, but even people loosely familiar with computers are skeptical of those emails/SMSs
status200··on The unlikely odds of making it big on TikTok
Tiktok will definitely be replaced by a similar app if they don't start paying out to their content creators in a similar way that Youtube (still awful, but better) does.

Hank Green has a great video[0] on the difference since he is on both platforms, and unless there is more compensation to the creators, they will get burned out chasing the high of the occasional viral video.

status200··on Botanists are disappearing – just when the world needs them most
I am a researcher / explorer of Arecaceae species and pay the bills with cybersecurity work, this article definitely struck a chord. It is very difficult to get anyone to care about even the rare and beautiful species these days, let alone help the efforts in conservation.

I am working on a website that helps links people wanting to help learn and protect forests with the people with the background knowledge and those who are getting their fingers in the dirt, please reach out if you are interested in participating.

status200··on DALL-E Chess in Jungle and Dunes
During the beta, i must have done thousands of requests and was initially blown away, but now i can tell the "look" of a Dall-e generated image... it has these weird blurry spots that make it seem like a memory of a dream - the main schema is there but if you focus on any one point, the illusion is broken. Looking forward to the day that it is so polished that I cannot differentiate it from a human art piece.
status200··on Project Helix by Adobe
Sure, i'll use this tool and then in a few months Adobe will want a monthly subscription fee or they break all my links or something.

Such a low effort site as well, ugly design and i found at least a couple dead links that redirect back to the homepage (e.g. https://www.hlx.live/business/project-plan)

status200··on MIT researchers propose Brazil-sized fleet of “space bubbles” to cool the Earth
The article mentions the fatal flaw with the particle technique, but may I request your source that leads you to believe that we have "perfected" deploying particles in our atmosphere on a global scale?

Also, please don't give Elon any ideas, he already has enough futile showboats.

status200··on LaMDA’s sentience is nonsense
This whole situation reminds me of when seventh graders thought that SmarterChild was a real human trapped in a room somewhere... did we switch back to leaded gasoline or something?
status200··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
I have tried to get a biologist / someone with more scientific knowledge than me to either help peer review, confirm or debunk this paper by Steven Quay:

https://zenodo.org/record/4642956

It seems so scientific and created a buzz when it came out, it has been the most thorough explanation of the lab leak theory, but I never saw a decent discussion that either helped confirm or debunk the ideas within.

status200··on On the dangers of cryptocurrencies and the uselessness of blockchain
I wouldn't really count on Bruce to have the complete picture, he is obviously biased.

He has some valid points but completely misses the mark because he doesn't understand the technology or its purpose. Having an immutable ledger would be very useful for things that should be public and transparent (e.g. where tax dollars are actually being spent, eliminating middlemen, etc.), but the structure right now is in its infancy and has its doors open to the same bad actors that have ruined the traditional financial systems.

At least blockchains are working to prevent collusion, whereas Bruce would rather whine to Congress and throw the baby out with the bathwater, either from ignorance, bitterness, or some combination of the two. Instead of fighting against the technology, he should advocate for public servants to be incorporated into a system that actually lets any casual citizen audit their input to the system as a whole, with confidence that all of the data is accurate and cannot be manipulated.

status200··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
I love cannabis, but i acknowledge that almost everyone who does dabs / resin / shatter / etc eventually turns into a zombie. As with everything, as soon as you concentrate the active ingredient(s), you can get way off course.
status200··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Shocking lack of research on your part. His mother was a supermodel and his father was/is a fairly sketchy businessman. Despite knowing his father had a dark side, he still chose to be with him after their parents divorce, signaling where his true emotions lay:

"After Maye and Errol divorced in 1980, Elon mostly lived with his father, who says he owned thoroughbred horses, a yacht, several houses and a Cessna."[0]

He has had a charmed existence his entire life.

status200··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
What a lazy argument... Elon's father is a fairly sketchy individual, and his wealth had an obvious boost to Elon's life and upbringing.

"After Maye and Errol divorced in 1980, Elon mostly lived with his father, who says he owned thoroughbred horses, a yacht, several houses and a Cessna"[0]

"Errol returned to South Africa with a half-share in a Zambian emerald mine, which would help to fund his family's lavish lifestyle of yachts, skiing holidays, and expensive computers." [2]

status200··on Stuxnet is embarrassing, not amazing (2011)
I agree, if something worked, then it was exactly as sophisticated / obfuscated as it needed to be.
status200··on Restarting my career after motherhood
Exactly... I was waiting for the happy ending and then I realized she has only been at the hunt for two weeks. Her spirit is great but you can tell that the ego needs to be worked on if she thought landing the perfect fit would happen so quickly after being out of the workforce for five years. I know people with glowing resumes that still take six months or more to get recruited into a role.
status200··on SQLite 3 Fiddle
Looks like a great sandbox, perfect for testing ideas and queries without having to spin up an environment or log in to something like Big Query
status200··on AI-art isn't art: DALL-E and other AI artists offer only the imitation of art
I feel like with this scene there will be more emphasis on curation since the tool rapidly speeds up creation/synthesis. Coming up with clever prompts and sifting through the output to find the gems will still be a valuable artistic skill.
status200··on ACM Digital Library Archive is Open Access with 50 Years of Published Records
All of the articles that I have searched/browsed are requiring login / payment... am I missing something?
status200··on Web3 is expensive P2P
So many people miss the point of blockchains that they forget that there is an actual utility for immutable ledgers, that is, to make sure funds (e.g. taxes) go to the places that they are claimed to be going to. Right now we pay our taxes and that's that - we don't even have a way to confirm that it is going to the extremely bloated military-industrial complex in the way the budget is written.

Will the government ever allow something like that? Most likely not, but it doesn't mean that having complete traceability for funds is a bad idea at its core.

status200··on Nearly 20% of active Twitter accounts likely to be fake or spam
They did mention that no one feature was a clear indication of being a spam account, but rather a combination of them.
status200··on Almost all searches on my independent search engine are now from SEO spam bots
I searched "best dress shoes reddit" as a test, and just got a random list of websites that had the word "shoes" on the page somewhere, including a Dinosaur Comic from 2008.

So... yeah. Won't exactly be my first choice of search engine in the future.

status200··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
This is strong evidence that you can have it all financially and still be a miserable human. The most valuable skills are recognizing when you have "enough", and being content with keeping yourself company.
status200··on Yep, I created the new Avatar font
It is also embedded in the article.
status200··on Half a million people watch me study on TikTok
Ads are not featured in the "Live" section of their app. TikTok makes more money from their gift economy (TT takes a cut when a user buys "coins" to send to another user) and then taking 50% from the content creators when they attempt to withdraw those gifted coins and turn them into cash.
status200··on Feeling uncomfortable when leaving phone at home shouldn't be normal
Dude, go touch grass. Being a jerk on YC does not make you look cool, smart, or savvy.
status200··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
Thank you for being so hostile. Amazing how triggered people get when you mention MacOS. I was referencing consumer usability, not enterprise utility.

Do they have to pay attention to it? No. Will it help improve their OS as a daily driver for non enterprise users? Sure.
