static_motion··on Price Increases for 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5
It's amazing how much they've lost the tinkerer audience over the last few years. Unless you really need the GPIO, there are far better and cheaper alternatives for a low power computer.
static_motion··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Is anyone surprised at this? Abandoning products in an untimely fashion is their specialty. I've never bought a hardware product from them for that reason, except for a 2nd gen Chromecast which was something whose longevity I didn't care too much about.
static_motion··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
I spend so much time cleaning up AI comments in the codebases I work on, it's maddening. I could have an instruction to not allow it to write comments at all, but some of them are useful.
static_motion··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Portugal only has DNS blocks on piracy sites, which are extremely easy to circumvent. I don't think that block is football-related.
static_motion··on Whoisinspace.com/
That figure you see on the website is total time in space for that cosmonaut, not one big stretch. Though the record for longest single mission is over 400 days, and record for cumulative longest time is over 1100, both by Russian cosmonauts.
static_motion··on iPhone Duo
Uh, yes? The first widespread usage of the word "phablet" I can recall was regarding the HTC HD2, which had a whopping 4.3" display and some people were losing their minds saying nobody would want to carry that in their pockets.
static_motion··on iPhone Duo
I find Dex to be decent enough. Its biggest limitation is that it runs Android apps, but for doing stuff in a browser on a big screen and multitasking with some other apps that are tolerable to use that way it's pretty good.
static_motion··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
The conservation status of the Eurasian Beaver is "least concern" and the population is increasing. Their distribution doesn't cover all of Europe, but there's certainly no shortage of them.
static_motion··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
I don't remember where, but I once read that all the developers that knew and understood the inner workings of core Windows components have left Microsoft many years ago, and that this is part of the reason that they introduced a brand new Settings menu and haven't changed Control Panel since Windows 7. I don't know how reliable that report is so take it with a grain of salt, but it does make a lot of sense considering what's been happening to Windows over the past 10 years.
static_motion··on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash
That's not a hot take, that's just factual.
static_motion··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
That's a baffling take. The era when hardware compatibility was a coin flip (I vividly remember having to download WiFi adapter drivers on another computer to get a fresh Linux install connected), when most desktop environments were poorly developed and very prone to crashing, was your favourite? I suspect this might be a big case of rose-tinted glasses. Linux has never been more "it just works" and accessible than it is now.
static_motion··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
And extensions do exactly that in Firefox. When installing (or updating) extensions you're notified of any and all permissions the extension is requesting from the browser and you're given the choice to proceed with the installation or not. Google goes a step further and just straight up denies user choice entirely.
static_motion··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
The reason is popularity. SteamOS is Arch-based and in the hands of a ton of people who aren't necessarily that technical. CachyOS and EndeavourOS have become very popular with the increasing adoption of desktop Linux. The AUR thus becomes an enticing attack surface.
static_motion··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
This is a mostly American perspective that I find endlessly amusing. I only have a handful of clothing items that say that tumble drying is fine on the tag, and most of my clothing is very casual wear (t-shirts, jeans, sports clothing). Dryers eat up clothing like it's nobody's business. Plus, electricity costs money while the sun is free. And while yes, the time to hang laundry has value, it takes 10 minutes to hang a load. If it rains, I hang the clothes indoors with a dehumidifier which is cheaper to run than a dryer and dries clothes in a matter of a couple of hours.
static_motion··on Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model
Beltalowda!
static_motion··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
I'm sorry but your first claim has no basis in reality. Any benchmark shows the lowest end Panther Lake chip performing at least 15% faster than M1 and 10% faster than M2 in single core performance which is where Apple Silicon excels, and greatly outperforming them in both multi-core and GPU performance while having equivalent battery life.
static_motion··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
You're right, I skimmed over the latter part of your comment. I don't know about your claim that M1/M2 will outperform Wildcat Lake in performance and battery life though, do we know specific figures to be able to say that for sure?
static_motion··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
I think they were talking about the upcoming XPS 13 that's based on the new Intel Wildcat Lake platform and will be priced very close to the MB Neo, so it's pretty comparable. It wouldn't be fair to compare it to something that starts at $1000.
static_motion··on NYT and vaping: How to lie by saying only true things (2022)
What are you on about? Your premise is pure bunk. The metal doesn't glow in normal usage. Speaking from experience: if that happens, it's a terribly painful experience and nobody would enjoy it. Vape coils usually heat to under 205°C/400°F, enough to transform the liquid into vapor but far below the glow point of the metal alloy typically used (kanthal/FeCrAl or nichrome/NiCr). Replacement is necessary due to residue buildup from the liquid, not because the metal has become degraded.
static_motion··on Serving a website on a Raspberry Pi Zero running in RAM
My thoughts exactly. People regularly run Pi-Hole on these things, which not only is "serving a website" (the dashboard) but is also being a DNS server.
static_motion··on If Apple makes an iPad Neo, it's all over
I don't know whether to consider the fact that you find a device lasting 6 years an impressive feat as testament to how crappy devices, especially mobile ones, have been for the past decade, or how used everyone is to abandon perfectly good devices just because "it's X years old".
static_motion··on Industrial design files for Keychron keyboards and mice
I disabled the lighting on my Keychron Q1 Max due to the battery drain. With it on (on the lowest glow possible), it would barely last a week. With it off? I go literal months without charging it back up, and it's used wirelessly 100% of the time, both via Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz.
static_motion··on Lichess and Take Take Take Sign Cooperation Agreement
Or full time. In some countries, those are pretty decent salaries. I earn €50k in one of the poorer European countries and that puts me in the top ~8%.
static_motion··on Meta will shut down VR Horizon Worlds access June 15
Is it really? Instagram, arguably the most popular (or maybe just behind TikTok, I'm not sure) social network currently, has successfully disengaged from the tainted Facebook name entirely. It may seem like a small thing but I do think that has a deep impact on the average person's perception of the service. Especially in the younger generation, the Facebook name has a definite "ick" to it (is that what the kids say these days?), even if it's just because it's the "boomer social network" and not because of the myriad privacy concerns associated with it.
static_motion··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
I'd say that an OSRS outage would be more likely to measurably affect the Venezuelan economy than the reverse.
static_motion··on Tesla's European sales tumble nearly 50% in October
You would never guess this while driving around in my small European country. The amount of Teslas is baffling and I still see very new ones every day.
static_motion··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
I'm not autistic and social interactions are incredibly energy draining for me. Granted I'm quite an introverted person, but not having autism doesn't mean you get pumped up from being around people.
static_motion··on Notion releases offline mode
But everything is stored as .md, which is ubiquitous. You'll still have access to your notes and be able to edit them with your preferred text editor.
static_motion··on OpenAI slams court order to save all ChatGPT logs, including deleted chats
I understand what they mean. There's this great video [1] which explains it in better terms than I ever could. I've timestamped the link because it's quite long, but if you've got the time it's a fantastic video with a great narrative and presentation.

static_motion··on Mozilla Firefox – Official GitHub repo
I'm a pretty young developer and git is the only VCS I'm familiar with, and even though it has its quirks I find it quite powerful and a perfectly adequate tool for the job. In what way is Mercurial better?
