statenjason··on Show HN: PickHealthInsurance.com
I develop for a company that does much of this. Electronic applications, plan comparisons, drug rates, etc. Also, you can phone in and have someone help you through the process. Is this more of what you would like so see?

statenjason··on TodoMVC - A common demo application for popular JavaScript MVC frameworks
That's interesting. I recently ported Todos to KnockoutJS[1] and straight jQuery(as a counter-example)[2] for a Knockout presentation I gave yesterday.

statenjason··on GoDaddy's New "Selective DNS Blackouts" Policy
I transferred from GoDaddy to name.com about a year ago by recommendation of a friend. It's nice to not be bombarded with GD babes and just enter my account to do what I need to do.
statenjason··on How to turn in your tax-cheating neighbor
Googling "tax fraud" offers links to bounty hunting with this program.

Edit: This wasn't a suggestion, but rather an observation.

statenjason··on How we found the file that was used to Hack RSA
This is answered in a response[1] to the grandparent post.

"The reason that PI was not detected is because the attacker embedded a Flash object inside the Excel file. The Flash file was a 0day exploit that could download and execute a file, which in this case was the attacker's PI client."

statenjason··on Joel Spolsky: Lunch
My lunches are spent at the gym. Nothing helps me focus on work better than getting away for an hour or so.
statenjason··on What math (and programming) teachers should know about memory
> We spend an hour learning a concept, and only practice using it when we get home.

This is why I'm a fan of what the Khan Academy[1] is striving to do. It flips this pattern around, with more instruction at home and practice when with the instructor. The teacher can then spend less time introducing a topic and instead working through the process with individual students.

Watching Khan's TED talk[2] is pretty inspiring.

statenjason··on Achievement Unlocked!
Odd, when I posted it all of the photos were there. They were a list of steam/xbox style achievements related to IT.

Looking at it now, it seems that the cache link expired. Googling the original address and viewing cache will show a version with the images.

statenjason··on Achievement Unlocked!
Site is down for me. Google cache for anyone who's having same issue: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:vaksAVJ...
statenjason··on ASP.NET Deployment Needs To Be Fixed
NuGet[1] is the package manager trezor is talking about.

statenjason··on ƒu.js - The Functional DOM traversing library.
Ninjas are stealthy. Carelessly adding four globals and modifying prototypes is not stealthy.
statenjason··on Node.js used to mirror DOM across browsers
Definitely has potential for the live support market
statenjason··on Calculating Color Contrast for Legible Text in Ruby
Interesting. Made me think to write a simple mixin for sass.

    @mixin fg-contrast($bg) {
      background: $bg;
      $textcolor: #ffffff;
      @if lightness($bg) > 50% {
        $textcolor: #000000;
      }
      color: $textcolor;
    }
Could also be done by using the red(), green(), and blue() functions, but lightness was simpler.

statenjason··on I'm embarrassed for RIM: Blackberry 6 sneak peak.
For as flashy as RIM tried to make the UI, they definitely skimped on the Twitter interface.

statenjason··on 7 Free Tools to Minify your Scripts and CSS
Two months ago I hooked up jsmin from a build script for release configurations. It's been helpful to have all of the reader-friendly stuff stripped out automatically without having to store minified copies in source control.
statenjason··on Visualize the Deepwater oil spil over your hometown
Covers the Great Salt Lake, and most of the upper corner of Utah.
statenjason··on The new Hotmail gives Gmail a run for its money
Agreed. My gut instinct on any @hotmail.com mail outside my address book is to mark as spam.
statenjason··on Clever "down for maintenance" page
iStockPhoto's maintenance page (heading 5) rocks
statenjason··on Get Ready For C# 4.0
We switched over in our shop on release week, and I must say that I'm enjoying the new features of .NET and C# 4.0. COM interop with Office Communicator is cleaner. IronRuby + Sass for css with ASP MVC rocks. Optional parameters have killed off many pass-through overloads. Also, DynamicObject and IDynamicMetadataProvider give potential for the dynamic keyword goes far beyond ExpandoObject. It opens up possibility for new DSLs within C#. Although likely to be misused, having the power to manipulate the meaning of the language is an impressive feature.
statenjason··on Did rubyonrails.org get hijacked?
She stole my domain last month when my registrar didn't notify me of expiration. The first time I saw that smirk, I wanted to ring her neck. http://jstaten.com
statenjason··on Linux AI programmable robot baby dinosaur.
The last time I saw a Pleo story, it was about the robotic dinosaur getting mauled by a battle bot. It gave me rather mixed emotions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95MAyWE0ERk
statenjason··on Apple Announces LapTop
So in this parallel universe, people went three decades with no way to create apps for their iPads? This definitely sounds worth celebrating.
statenjason··on Daring Fireball: The Kids Are All Right
The apps are not the problem. That's actually a great use of the platform. Rather, when/if your child becomes curious about creating something of his own, he's met with a $100 barrier to entry.
statenjason··on Parkinson's Patients Who Can't Walk Can Cycle

statenjason··on Cuiler
Searching for "hamburger" made my day.
statenjason··on Less Talk More Rock
The giant "1, 2, 3" is an attempt to add Rock amongst a slew of talk.
statenjason··on Ask HN: Please Review My New Social Music Website
Clicking the "Browse" link takes me to "Browse Random Files". First, I don't believe that the uploaded songs should be thought of as "files." People want music, tunes, and tracks. "Files" almost makes me weary of having to download something. Second, there needs to be some structure to browsing - by artist, genre, year, popularity, etc. Presenting a person with a few random tracks when your database has 1000s of them makes it difficult for users to find anything specific.

On profiles, the url pattern needs some work. You mention in your blog that you would like bands to say "check us out on Tune To Us." However, if they're uploading their songs and want people to hit their profile they'd have to say, "Check us out at Tune To Us slash profile slash view slash 2934." Perhaps adjusting to something shorter with more significance. A band/user should be more than just a number.

I believe your site's has potential, but it also needs some work to make it useful to the masses. Good luck with it. I'll keep an eye on where it goes.

statenjason··on Ask HN: Rate my startup keywordenvy.com
Claiming to be "leading" when you just entered the competition? You're still in beta. Speaking of being in beta, you should probably mention that on your registration and/or terms of service. Also, incentives to sign up during this period could be a good thing.
