stargrazer··on Gecode is an open source C++ toolkit for developing constraint-based systems (2019)
Interesting, but why post it? Nothing seems to have been committed/updated in about 6 years. There are a number of PRs outstanding. Is it still in use?

The forum implies that not much maintenance happened after the passing of the primary contributor, even if there were good intentions.

Are there other constraint solvers which have subsumed this one?

stargrazer··on What is the competitive advantage of authors in the age of LLMs?
Some one has to gain the original knowledge to build the original content and form cohesive arguments which can then be sucked up and hallucinated by LLMs to convey to the masses in some sort of incohesive fashion. Can an LLM create a 7 minute read article from only a few nebulous thoughts? Will it take as much time to coach an LLM into something to be read as it would taken to write the original article unaided?
stargrazer··on KDE is finally getting a native virtual machine manager called “Karton”
If you need an instance of windows at random periods of time, you can always run it as a VM with VirtualBox or KVM/Qemu... or Karton as headlined in the article.

stargrazer··on Baby Steps into Genetic Programming
I suppose with Genetic Programming, given an appropriate set of descriptive symbols, it is relatively easy to understand the final result and intuit if there is any over-fitting involved. On the other hand, machine learning results are typically a black box, the weights involved typically do not easily lend themselves to understanding the nuances of the solution.

stargrazer··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Probably why Tesla's have auto-drive. Car has to drive it self while you focus your attention on the screen to decode how it works.

stargrazer··on Microsoft is basically discontinuing Windows. What will happen, then?
I thought Windows 8 was supposed to be Windows-ForEver. I think I heard the same for Windows 10. Weren't they supposed to be on perpetual upgrade?

uh-huh. that was easy in a very complicated sort of way. are they working to simplify this so it becomes some sort of standard idiom? or is there another way?
stargrazer··on Colorize Lidar point clouds with camera images

stargrazer··on Alaska's top-heavy glaciers are approaching an irreversible tipping point
Glaciers have been melting for many thousands of years. If a trend line were drawn from the time they started melting, you'd find that, given no additional earth changing events, eventually, the glaciers would totally melt. So .... the irreversible tipping point has existed for quite some time.

stargrazer··on Silicon Valley is pricing lecturers out of AI research
This is hard to read. Is this a bad AI generation or a bad machine translation of an original article?
stargrazer··on Demystifying the use of Parquet for time series
This reminds me of HDF5, which, even thought the data is written/appended in row format, there is an API to chunk the data, organize into columns, compress based upon column regularities, and write to storage.

On reading the reverse happens.

This becomes the compute/space conundrum: space is reduced with column based regularity, but time is increased due to the extra overhead of columnar compression.

stargrazer··on Building a baseline JIT for Lua automatically (2023)
I am using https://luajit.org/ in my GCC C++ project.

Can I use this faster Lua JIT in my project as a replacement? And if so, how so?

The existing luajit doesn't do v5.1, so it would be nice to use this newer engine at the newer baseline lua version level.
