starefossen··on About the security content of iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1
You are right. My iPhone was still on 14.6 - that explains it then!
starefossen··on About the security content of iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1
I don’t get why this is almost a 1 GB download on my iPhone. Defiantly a no go for me as long as I am on vacation without Wi-Fi.
starefossen··on Bringing supply chain security features to the Go community
You could probably use a GitHub Action and check the API for author of the pull request if you want to require additional verification. If have done something similar with auto accepting docs-only pull requests in the past.
starefossen··on Bringing supply chain security features to the Go community
The amount of pull requests from dependency updates can become more manageable if you enable GitHub’s Auto Merge feature[1]

starefossen··on Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work
With all of my children I have had 4 months of paid paternity leave from when they were about a year old. I live in Norway so this is covered by our social welfare system.

For me this has been some of the best time of my life becoming much closer with all of my children then I believe I would have otherwise.

Being the primary caregiver for a significant amount of time made us more equal when it came to parenting later on to the point where there are really no difference between who can do what. This have given us more flexibility and reduced stress in every day life and it is easier to let the other one take over if you need a break.

During the pandemic lockdown we alternated who had the children and who where at work.

starefossen··on Kubernetes 1.19
Just stick to stable Kubernetes API resources[1] and they are guaranteed to continue to work through all 1.x versions.

starefossen··on Kubernetes 1.19
Ingress going GA refers to the Ingress API resource in the Kubernetes API becoming stable. There are no discussion (or Kubernetes Enhancement Proposals (KEPs) regarding providing a default ingress controller. There are two areas that Kubernetes has taken a hands of approach and it is ingress traffic (and external load balancing) and storage. Those are provided by external vendors through APIs.
starefossen··on GDC 2020 has been postponed
People with mild cases aren’t getting counted in the same way so that number is likely very incorrect. What we know is that we are very far of the death toll of seasonal flue which is estimated to be around 291,000 - 646,000 globaly.
starefossen··on GDC 2020 has been postponed
This is ridiculous! The seasonal flu virus is likely more deadly than COVID-19 [1] maybe we should ban all assemblies permanently then.

starefossen··on Diagram as Code
I agree that it is not entirely self explaining. I ended going with Diagram as Code based on the Infrastructure as Code [1] principle which is the same concept; you write code to generate your infrastructure.

starefossen··on Show HN: Terrastruct – A Diagramming Tool for Systems
Any thoughts on support for textual representation of the diagrams?
starefossen··on Oslo had 0 pedestrian, 0 cyclist, 0 children and 1 driver trafic deaths in 2019
To some extent. They have dedicated bus lanes with less traffic than the rest of the road and they have started restricting parts of the city center for cars.
starefossen··on Santa hat removed from VS Code after complaint
This is why we can’t have nice things!
starefossen··on From Node.js to io.js and back again
Yes, you are absolutely correct. It was mainly a governance issue that hindered further technical development.
starefossen··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
Static types most definitely do not replace the need for tests!
starefossen··on Every new web app at PayPal starts with TypeScript
My biggest grape with staticly typed languages like TypeScript is that many developers considers type safety a replacement for test - it is not. It is completely at best.
starefossen··on Ask HN: Which tool do you use to create beautiful diagrams?
Are there any handy tools for animating these diagrams? Like the one at git lfs?
starefossen··on The ‘clean plate’ mentality drives us to overeat?
At least where I live in Norway I would argue that it is not the amount of food you eat during a meal that is a problem but everything else in between regular meals (coke, chocolate, chips etc.).
starefossen··on Corretto – No-cost, multiplatform, developer-preview distribution of OpenJDK
Lack of LTS and commercial support most probably.
starefossen··on IBM acquires Red Hat
Similar experience here in Norway...
starefossen··on IBM acquires Red Hat
This affects on so many open source projects in addition to RHEL. ANSIBLE, Ceph, OpenShift, Linux kernel, JBoss as well as everything Red Hat acquired from CoreOS.
starefossen··on Upgrading GitHub from Rails 3.2 to 5.2
As a person working for a large software consultancy in Scandinavia I hate to see so many using type safety as an excuse for not writing tests. At least a dynamic language forces you to write tests and frankly it is often easier to write tests in a dynamic language imho.
starefossen··on Keep a Changelog
One of the reasons these big ones don’t use a proper changelog is because new, and deprecated, features are controlled by dynamic feature toggles as opposed to what version of the app you are running. Of course, new version adds support for new toggles (features) but that is not a guarantee that they will be enabled for your user - or at all.
starefossen··on My home lab setup for highly-available Internet
Only thing missing is a chaos monkey to randomly power down devices to make sure everything still stays available.
starefossen··on Only a few vendor-paid developers do almost all open-source work
Keep in mind that many of these corporate employed developers would likely contribute to the same OSS projects as a part of their job regardless of what company they happen to be employed at.
starefossen··on Spinnaker 1.0: A Continuous Delivery Platform for Cloud
Cool! How does spinnaker compare to Jenkins pipelines?
