stanski··on Electric cars prove we need to rethink brake lights
Engine breaking on a motorcycle can be quite significant as well. I've thought about this being a problem there too.
stanski··on Writing Is My Main Freedom. One Day My Work Disappeared (2021)
How do you think re-integration will go after being robbed of everything in prison? Does society gain from this as a whole?
stanski··on DPReview.com to close
Not to mention that almost all photo consumption happens on a phone as well.

Only when you open a phone photo on a big screen and compared to one taken by a real lens do you realize the big difference. Despite all the incredible technology in phone cameras, there is no substitute for proper optics.

stanski··on No one wants to have kids anymore
Interesting. You sound like me from the future or something, except we only had to do IUIs instead. No vasectomy yet but maybe this is a good warning.
stanski··on No one wants to have kids anymore
I'm curious why you ended up having two?

My wife and I are done with the one. I think we got lucky - she is a sweet, fun and fairly easy (for now) two year old, but the decrease in life quality is significant. I didn't want to further extend the monotony of our current life by having a second.

Overall my advice to anyone would be if you are not missing anything in your life and are happy, you don't have to have children. Other people might tell you how great it is (after complaining a bunch, and then complaining some more later) but that's their life, not yours.

stanski··on Ask HN: What brand of laptop do you use?
Thinkpad P14s 2nd gen (AMD) running openSUSE Tumbleweed. Very happy with the setup.

The laptop mostly stays at home, hooked up to a large monitor but it travels well as well.

stanski··on Refurb weekend: New batteries for the Palm Pilots
I like that a "repair-hostile" device from back then was one utilizing a label-covered screw.
stanski··on Accounting For Developers, Part I
I'm incorporated in Canada and have done my own corporate taxes in the past.

There is no hope to get this done right unless you use double entry accounting as every dollar has to be accounted for. Unlike personal taxes, where you only declare your income and pay a tax on that, every dollar that enters or leaves the company, or becomes a different kind of asset (say computer hardware) has to be declared and everything has to balance at the end of year.

stanski··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
> For me, this is key. The early years were hard on me. I’m a hobby-driven introvert, and having kids felt like a major sacrifice of the personal time I was used to. I learned a lot about myself and my needs in the process.

> I loved my kids more than anything, but I also teetered on regret for some time.

Basically my issue right now but it's getting better with time. That said, it's hard to imagine ever taking the plunge with a second one (even if we weren't too old for that anyway).

stanski··on Why I am not going to buy a computer (1987) [pdf]
I agree it's much better than other manufacturers. And therein lies the problem!
stanski··on Why I am not going to buy a computer (1987) [pdf]
"All the way back to 2011" made me chuckle. Practically ancient times!
stanski··on Ask HN: Why are you programming your hobby projects in a niche language?
Your brain probably thanked you for the mental exercise so it wasn't all for nothing.
stanski··on Germany shelves Nord Stream 2 pipeline
Precisely my original point. No need to restate it.
stanski··on Germany shelves Nord Stream 2 pipeline
Is it more nuanced though? The moment separatists started taking over Ukrainian territory, they should've attempted to take that back.

Whether they were unable to or not willing to, as you suggest, now things are a lot worse. Either way it was a strategic failure, so yes, they did fail to protect their borders even back then.

stanski··on Germany shelves Nord Stream 2 pipeline
There is absolutely nothing Ukraine can do but sit and watch Russia do what it wants. They weren't able to defend their Eastern border back when Russia was pretending to not be involved, let alone when they openly are.

This is Crimea all over again; the West will keep making noises while Russia effectively annexes further portions of Ukraine.

stanski··on High degree of overlap between r/poor and crypto subreddits
Or in many cases, get not poor quick.
stanski··on Unusual login activity was due to bug
Kind of a poor way to judge a product, I'd say. I'm no longer a lastpass user but if you read up on them you'll find that your initial assessment is way off.

They've had their issues but the idea of it being built by a novice programmer is very far from reality.

stanski··on New Colorways for Firefox 94
I for one enjoyed trying out the different color schemes to see what looks good.

Now what they mean by "limited time only", I have no idea. Are the colours going to suddenly revert with a new version of the browser? If so, why? The FOMO marketing BS definitely puts a damper on the whole thing.

stanski··on Banks, gangsters and the strange resurgence of cash
I guess we live in a time when cash is now a scary thing. This is kind of funny... And makes me feel old.
stanski··on Plane damaged after being hit by York police drone at Buttonville Airport
Flying a drone at or near circuit altitude within the vicinity of an active airport, without prior notification... You can probably guess about the kind of person who was operating the drone.
stanski··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
I kept reading this as "cat-free neighbourhood", multiple times too. Looked at the website but couldn't figure out what part of all the nice features was thanks to the community being cat-free. Were the BBQs and hammocks better if there is no cats anywhere?

There is a cat in one of the images near the top. I thought maybe they were being sarcastic or something.

Geez! :)

stanski··on Dorothea Lange’s Censored Photographs of FDR’s Japanese Concentration Camps
You make it sound like a forced one week vacation due to a canceled flight or something.
stanski··on Django Suit – modern theme for Django admin interface
It has outpaced its own security cert.
stanski··on Efficiency eludes the construction industry (2017)
Yes and no. I don't know of any exercise that would compare to sanding a wall, for example. It's not exactly an activity you would want to be doing for a long stretch of time. No matter how fit you are, construction work isn't like you're getting paid to go to the gym.
stanski··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
Regardless of who is at fault, I don't understand this love affair with the Tesla autopilot. Relax but with remain vigilant with your hands on the wheel. This doesn't make sense to me.

You're either operating the vehicle or not. The hard part of daily driving is paying attention, not barely turning the wheel to change lanes. What is the purpose of the current autopilot?

stanski··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
So true. Most times when I'm making a right turn and have to wait for a pedestrian to cross, I notice that they never look up. Somehow if you have the right of way, cars are magically supposed to obey that. Better to be in one piece than be right.
stanski··on Brazil agency fines Apple $2M for not including charger in iPhone 12 box
Oookay. Nevermind that all modern phones use usb-c, I guess?
stanski··on Why Are So Many Base Jumpers Dying? (2016)
> We’re talking about real, human-powered flight—or, at least as close as humanity has ever come to it.

That's not really true though, no? It's just a form of gliding. It's absolutely not human-powered flight.

stanski··on What's New in PHP 8.1
Most of those issues can be answered with "maybe you're not paying enough".
stanski··on The Coach in the Operating Room (2011)
It's strange that this isn't a thing. Commercial pilots occasionally have a chief pilot observe their performance during flights and make suggestions on improvements. This absolutely should be more of a thing in any healthcare setting too, not just surgery. Not just something that happens during residency.
