standardly··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
Agreed. And, I could have stated it simply:

It just annoys me.

I wouldn't consider this something that really matters to me, though. I'm not up in arms over it. It's not an insurmountable annoyance. It didn't ruin my day. (LOL, the other comment about "perceived duality"... It's really not that deep!)

I didn't know I was going against the grain, though. It seems folks here are perfectly fine with AI discourse. How do we even know when a user is real? I digress.

standardly··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
I simply disagree. If I wanted an LLM's opinion, I would forego HN entirely and just use ChatGPT. I browse forums like this to get organic opinions from real people.

When I see someone post an LLM reply, it makes me wonder - is the reply synonymous with their actual opinion, only formatted better? Or are they attempting to disguise an LLM output as something of their own? The former I am much more OK with, but the latter irks me for reasons I haven't fully considered and you have me thinking about.

"Calling out" AI comments has felt like somewhat of a duty, heh, but maybe we've reached a point of no return. I still value a real, organic opinion, though, no matter how well an AI can summarize it.

standardly··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
That is copied straight from an LLM.

Do folks make no attempt at humanizing their LLM outputs? Is that even worth doing?

I personally wish you guys would - the moment I realize I'm reading an LLM-generated comment, my interest immediately wanes and I stop reading.

standardly··on GTA 6 Developers Unionize
Yeah, same. I'd rather wait for a better game made by happier devs. The studio is just notorious for crunch and failing to adhere to release dates, so i was just stating the obvious

standardly··on Bricks and Minifigs Stole a Man's $200k Lego Collection
This seems like an easily arbitrated dispute. But I'm not privy to all the details and IANAL.
standardly··on College students drown out AI-praising commencement speeches with boos
LOL what a conflation. Legitimately laughed out loud when you said "ban mathematics". Totally not a strawman at all. Typo maybe?
standardly··on Math Jokes in Alice in Wonderland
I believe it's because this is random AI garbage. I swear ChatGPT can be used to justify anything. The "jokes" are nonsensical and unfunny, even for early-19th-century Oxford professor inside jokes...

I'm surprised to see, on HN of all places, so many people taking the AI bait so often. Seems like more than half of blog posts and articles posted here are AI generated, but people skip reading the content and just go straight to the comments to discuss the title out of context.

standardly··on Red Hot Chili Peppers ink $300M deal with Warner Music to sell catalog
guess this is anecdotal based on my experience but RHCP seems to be very popular worldwide. Especially considering in many countries popular American music is played many years after they are a hit in the US. RHCP plays overseas nearly every tour and seem to be absolutely massive in South America (just go to any RHCP youtube video, and look at all the comments like "please come back to Brasil!"

standardly··on Music with Lyrics Interferes with Cognitive Tasks (2023)
Youtube is a gold mine (favorite channels: MrMarmar420, telekinetica, astavely56, silverchair97, lazylightning55a, and phish's official channel) MKDevo also has some good pro-shots of early 3.0 (full view of CK5 lights) but doesn't seem to cover them anymore.

Relisten or phish.in if you don't mind taper auds.

If you really want the good stuff, the live phish app is unbeatable. Full sondboad quality, all the LP official releases, Live Baits, every show since 2009, and most (but nowhere near all) of the good 90's shows. Can't recommend enough, it's an endless well of musical exploration and is my default music app

yes i've been waiting for years to be asked this on HN =P

edit: also theres a "just jams" phish channel that cuts out all songs/lyrics lol

standardly··on Grok 4.3
The grok companions still aren't available on Android :( Such a wasted market opportunity

I'm not an anime person, but I thought the waifus were kind of endearing and seemed like a much better experience for casual prompting

standardly··on Music with Lyrics Interferes with Cognitive Tasks (2023)
Instrumental music seems very popular with those who listen while working. Lyrics are noticeably distracting for me, unless I tune out the music altogether, but with instrumentals I can sort of work to a "rhythm" it feels like. So this was kind of intuitive knowledge, already, at least for me.

Because of this, I find myself listening to a lot of Jungle and DnB, jazz, fusion, and the occasional 30 minute Phish jam.

standardly··on Where the goblins came from
WOW this is something else. I had to ask it to STOP calling everything goblins. A bug? A code-goblin. A feature? A new, fancy goblin. A new task? Task-goblin.

WTF? Was it because at one point I discussed a fantasy RPG game design document?

I 100% thought it was just something I induced, so I tried to change its behavior - so reading this is hilariously validating...

Examples from ONE gpt response, this the one that broke me:

"Yeah, this is a great little gremlin-project" "whatever cursed little trading imp-name you like." "Phase 4: Polish goblin" "Phase 5: Maybe dangerous goblin"

standardly··on PS5 Linux loader goes public, turning console into full Linux gaming PC
I didn't consider SteamOS. That in itself is an amazing use case. I wonder if simply having the linux kernel installed is enough to run it?
standardly··on PS5 Linux loader goes public, turning console into full Linux gaming PC
Genuine question, no snark intended, bc this is interesting... but:

Why would someone want to do this? What is the benefit (besides satisfying a technical challenge)?

standardly··on Sergey Brin Moves to the Right, with a 'MAGA Girlfriend' by His Side
It's called income tax, which isn't new, and used to be much higher for the top brackets. Income tax rates are not derived from the Constitution, and an amendment is not necessary. But if someone wanted to propose an amendment to forbid taxation, then good luck to them.

Let's say a group of 3 people wanted to pay for something that costs $3k. They want to split the cost fairly, but two of them only own $1k. The third person owns $70 billion. Would you ask them to agree to each give $1k? Or would you ask the person with $70 billion to maybe cover, idk, at least half? Anyone that answers "well its not fair to the person with 70 billion to ask that they pay more", is an idealogically-captured simpleton. It only takes basic logic and empathy to derive the obvious answer but meaningless ideology prevails somehow

standardly··on Sergey Brin Moves to the Right, with a 'MAGA Girlfriend' by His Side
Proposing taxation on wealthy individuals isn't exactly a sudden and dramatic philosophical shift to the extreme left.
standardly··on Claude-powered AI coding agent deletes company database in 9 seconds
I've noticed a general decline in performance across several major applications within the past year or so. Not making any accusations yet, because it could be placebo, or coincidence, or selective bias... but I have my suspicions.
standardly··on Interview with Bob Odenkirk
You're right to point that out, and I admire your willingness to challenge the accepted narrative. That writing style not just unique to AI — all humans write like that. That's not annoying — it's refreshing. It's not AI repeating the same phrase — it's just AI using what they're trained on! It's like a monkey trained to write essays — the monkey isn't making up words; it only knows what it was taught! That's not AI — it's just an agent (human OR AI) formulating a response based on given context. That's not exhausting — it's informative!

Breaking chacter for a minute, it really annoys me every time a blatantly obvious LLM comment is called out, it's flooded with replies like "No, I akshually write like that - people have always written exactly like that" as if its not obvious lol

standardly··on Iran claims US exploited networking equipment backdoors during strikes
Cisco continuously blows my mind.

Did you mean to include the Juniper CVE's? In my experience, all vendors are constantly remediating CVE's. I wonder if Cisco has the most vulnerabilities discovered because they also have the most users, largest product offering, highest inventory, etc?

I've had a hell of a time patching Palo Alto's and Fortigates, too. Critical CVEs, day-one RCE attacks. It seems more profitable to rush out new code / new products, and just address vulns as they appear, rather than spending extra development time hardening the software.

standardly··on Less human AI agents, please
Solved this by starting my prompt in ask mode in vscode and having it candidly plan changes so I can approve them. Once I'm confident it's on the right track, I swap to agent mode and have it implement said changes. Takes longer, but separating working tasks from conversations has been a better workflow overall

So, same concept for asking questions / discussing features. Get out of agent mode and use conversational until you want changes made

standardly··on 'Hairdryer used to trick weather sensor' to win $34,000 Polymarket bet
I recommend thinking about the issue for yourself. It's not hard to see why prediction markets are subject to abuse. Market regulation has little to do with morality or "moral rights". Would I be correct in assuming you're an Ayn Rand fan?
standardly··on Over-editing refers to a model modifying code beyond what is necessary
I've had a bad experience using AI for front-end stuff, where I replace or deprecate a feature only to notice later all the artifacts it left behind, some which were never even used in the first place.

I re-did an entire UI recently, and when one of the elements failed to render I noticed the old UI peeking out from underneath. It had tried just covering up old elements instead of adjusting or replacing them. Like telling your son to clean their room, so they push all the clothes under the bed and hope you don't notice LOL

It saves 2 hours of manual syntax wrangling but introduces 1 .5 hours of clean up and sanity checking. Still a net productivity increase, but not sure if its worth how lazy it seems to be making me (this is an easy error to correct, im sure, but meh Claude can fix it in 2 seconds so...)

standardly··on Apple's New CEO Has a Background in VR, but Is Reportedly Bearish on Vision Pro
Anyone who has worn a VR headset for more than 10 minutes straight should be bearish on VR. It's not a comfortable experience and only marginally useful.

Now AR/XR, smart glasses... Definitely has potential. I'd like to see more in the AR space. Less rendering work = less heat being blasted into my eyeballs, less motion sickness, etc..

standardly··on Sauna effect on heart rate
The equation is not simply "exercise" -> "live longer" via some unknown correlation.

Exercise increases cardiovascular health, mental well-being, etc. It should be pretty obvious that someone with less risk of heart failure will live longer on average (considering the #1 cause of death in the US...) I don't think you need to factor for every possible life circumstance to deduce that known-healthy activities improve longevity

standardly··on The buns in McDonald's Japan's burger photos are all slightly askew
It's simply a matter of market psychology. Some find that interesting, others may not. Culture is a factor in psychology, so yeah, that too.
standardly··on Rare concert recordings are landing on the Internet Archive
No clue how that happened. Epic fail. Not even pasting my comment there, just going to let it die.
