stanac··on GitHut – Programming Languages and GitHub (2014)
> 80% of new developers on GitHub use Copilot in their first week

I am not sure how honest this statement is. I remember typing something in an input which I thought was search, but no, it was AI search or something like that. Free copilot got activated on my account simply by submitting a search query. Statement may be technically true but it's target audience are investors and maybe higher management (someone is getting a raise or a bonus), not actual developers.

Not really, you should learn Typescript by learning JavaScript first. Then consider learning C#. Or if you want to focus on the back end side learn C# and skip TS/JS.

They are created by the same person but they are very different in my opinion.

TypeScript is "a tool" for JS, it is possible to compile without errors but still fail in runtime (e.g. wrong object type returned from API), on the other hand parsing JSON with C# will give you correct object type, it may fail if some properties are missing but it will fail at parsing call, not further down when you try to use missing property. In other words typing is not glued on top of the language it's core of the language.

I sometimes miss Spring magic when working with ASP.NET, and I worked 12+ years with C# and only a year with Spring. Not saying one is better than the other, it's always a choice, less magic = more boilerplate and less boilerplate = more magic.

stanac··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Do you have a link? I want to read more about that. Did they interpret any use as deriving from minio?
stanac··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Do we need a fork? As an example, ffmpeg is source only for mac and windows, which just means someone else is building and distributing binaries.
stanac··on LINQ and Learning to Be Declarative
Not a horror story. I like how marten worked with postgres and wanted something similar for sqlite, so I made a library that stores data as json, and translates linq to sql using json query functions. It wasn't very fast, but it was fun experience. For next attempt (once I have more time) I will probably include source generators to precompile queries and skip if not all, then most translation at runtime.
stanac··on Why the push for Agentic when models can barely follow a simple instruction?
The problem in this case is that LLMs are bad with golang, I don't write go, I am guessing from my experience with kotlin. I mainly use kotlin (rest apis) and LLMs are often bad at writing it. They e.g. confuse mockk and mockito functions and then agent spiral into a never ending loop of guessing what's wrong and trying to fix it in 5 different ways. Instead I use only chat, validate every output and point out errors they introduce.

On the other hand colleagues working with react and next have better experience with agents.

stanac··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
Is that why we no longer have telephone boots? They want to prevent Neo from jumping in and out of Matrix?
stanac··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
There was a video on YT (gamers nexus I think) and an excel sheet comparing jumps in performance gains between each new nvidia generation. They are becoming smaller and smaller, probably now driven by AI boom where most of the silicon is used for data centers. Regardless of that, I have a feeling we are approaching the ceiling of chip performance. Just comparing PS3 and PS4 and then PS4 with PS5, performance jump is smaller and size of the hardware has become enormous and GPUs are more and more power hungry. If generational jumps were good enough we wouldn't need more power and cooling and big boxes for desktop PCs that can hold long graphic cards.
stanac··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
More or less every high-end hardware becomes obsolete, or in other words becomes second class. First difference is that at least networking hardware could be used for years, compute/storage servers became obsolete faster than networking. Second is scale. Google summary says that current investments are 17x greater than dot com investments. It may be wrong about the number but investments are at least on an order of magnitude larger.

Maybe in next decade we will have cheap gaming cloud offerings built on repurposed GPUs.

stanac··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
How does that work? It loads kernel from drive to ram?

Isn't windows fast boot something like that (only slower, depending on ssd)? It semi-hibernates, stores kernel part of memory on disk for faster startup.

stanac··on AMD and Sony's PS6 chipset aims to rethink the current graphics pipeline
They will never drop ray tracing, some new games require ray tracing. The only case where I think it's not needed is some kind of specialized office prebuilt desktops or mini PCs.

> God I wish something like Silverlight returned in a way that is mobile battery friendly.

Not exactly the same, but there is Blazor, it is using html instead of xaml. Also there are third party solutions (I have no experience with) like Uno and Avalonia, both are xaml-based.

> mobile battery friendly

Do you have some specific framework in mind that is not battery friendly? Probably anything is built on js/wasm isn't battery friendly.

stanac··on ChatGPT Pulse
Does that mean AI needs to be able to decide "what to do today"? Like wake up in the morning and decide I am going to research a problem in field X and then email all important scientist or institutions with my findings? I am not sure if we want that kind of independent agents, sounds like a beginning of a cyberpunk novel.
stanac··on Is a movie prop the ultimate laptop bag?
Maybe GP is from a smaller town where it's less likely to get robbed.
stanac··on Download responsibly
10,000 times a day is on average 8 times a second. No way someone has 8 fixes per second, this is more like someone wanted to download a new copy every day, or every hour but they messed up milliseconds config or something. Or it's simply malicious user.

edit: bad math, it's 1 download every 8 seconds

Quick google search, Jeff has a blog post about abortion, I haven't read it, but it starts with a warning:

I guess GP is referring to that post.

(Unrelated to main topic) Why is number of dead comments so high here? Do bots search for keywords that may increase views like "starlink" or something?

stanac··on DuckDB NPM packages 1.3.3 and 1.29.2 compromised with malware
My password manager is a separate app, I always have to manually copy/paste the credentials. That's because I believed that approach to be more secure, now I see it's replacing one attack vector for another.
stanac··on DuckDB NPM packages 1.3.3 and 1.29.2 compromised with malware
You are probably right. Still browser vendors or even extension devs can create a system where username hash and password hash are stored and checked on submit to warn for phishing. Not sure if I would trust such extension, except in case it's FF recommended and verified extension.

You can block them on dns level. That's what I did when I wanted to stop wasting time playing 2048. (Not sure how to configure DNS on phone, I was using PC to play at the time)
stanac··on YouTube views are down (don't panic)
I can recommend pocket tube extension. You can create subscription groups and assign different channels to different groups. It doesn't require user to be signed in to work.
