stakecounter··on A Tipless Restaurant is a Well-Run Restaurant?
He didn't say that the waiting staff is 1% of the cost. He said that being waited on is only ~1% of the value the customer is receiving, since the waiting experience is much less important to the consumer than the food quality, convenience, or venue.
stakecounter··on Tesla Motors plans to debut cheaper car in early 2015 (2013)
Especially if this is the base price. I'm prepared to be massively disappointed when 40k is the cost of the smallest battery model and the largest is 50-60k. I don't care about most optional car upgrades but vehicle range is so important that I hope they don't choose to bundle a larger battery with cosmetic options.
stakecounter··on Tesla Motors plans to debut cheaper car in early 2015 (2013)
It hit the front page on reddit and now it's naturally flowing down into the HN karma grab. I personally didn't know it was planned for this early until now.
stakecounter··on Dropbox DMCA takedown on personal folders
Makes perfect sense to me if you don't trust your host not to report you. Keys are small enough to just send in a private chat rather than hosted alongside the encrypted file.

stakecounter··on Mt.Gox Withdrawals
> Don't get Gox'd, use a better exchange.

Interestingly, a bug (and maybe margin trading exploit) took down trading on Bitfinex earlier tonight and withdrawals are currently halted. Before this I've never had any issues with the exchange.

The last few months dealing with bitcoins have made me realize how important it is to have your money insured.

stakecounter··on [dead]
This is really similar to a thread that made the top of HN a couple months ago about the guy who was having problems with CoinBase (and couldn't get any support) which was never deleted [1]. It was successful in causing enough of a riot to get the CEO involved [2]. When dealing with lots of money and useless customer support, it's understandable that someone may feel desperate enough to try and raise a storm on HN when there's literally no other avenue to getting somebody to look into the issue. Whether or not this should be happening on HN, I think its important to have SOME place where people can voice their issues so that these startups don't continue to think they can get away with selling incomplete products with little to no support when anything goes wrong.

stakecounter··on Reactive Joins in Meteor
This is a great article and seems to be really similar to a problem I had/have at work (not using meteor though, and we use a relational DB). We have a system where clients can set up arbitrary queries about data for a project management type system with live updates. For example, you could quickly create a to do list by setting up a query to find all the Tasks not in the "Completed" state where you are the owner. Then you can specify any fields you want to see about that item, like priority or description. When an update happens, the server checks to see if the changed item is fulfilled by the query filter and publishes either an addition/update with those fields included or a removal to the client who registered it.

I can imagine this scenario would scale much better using meteor to receive just the basic models (unjoined) but then doing the filter/joins on the client side (I don't use meteor, but from what I understand you can basically query the data you've received on the server from the client). That way, the server wouldn't bear the burden of running almost identical queries for multiple clients who only differ in their user ID's.

The good solution is in Android's hands and is to allow on demand permission requests after the app is installed.
stakecounter··on Ask HN: Help. I need to go away from here

Good news: You sound like a great fit as an interview passer for any large tech company in the United States.

stakecounter··on Google Video Quality Report
I was really hoping this was going to address the seeking problem. It seems like whenever I want to seek, even backwards to already buffered content, there's a 50/50 chance the video player will stop working entirely and force me to do a refresh and lose my entire video buffer.
stakecounter··on I Got Fired Last Week. That’s a Good Thing. Here’s Why
Blog posts like this make me feel concerned that I'm becoming a generalist right now and I'm not sure I can avoid it. I'm on a really small team doing development of both front end (Javascript/HTML/CSS) and backend (PHP for our back end, SQL db, node server for websocket updates and some other stuff). I feel like I don't spend enough time doing any one thing in order to be considered a specialist at any of it, just passable enough to get done whatever needs to be done at the time.

Why not just release the usernames and leave out the phone numbers?

stakecounter··on New Coinbase Wallet, Coinbase Merchant App Released For Android
Anyone considering using Coinbase for their bitcoin transactions should be sure to read some of the stories on /r/coinbase before giving them your money. My personal experience is detailed here [1]. I am of the opinion that their customer support infrastructure is not yet prepared to handle their large (and rapidly growing) user base.

stakecounter··on Beat This Level, Get A Programming Job
Is the general consensus now that core programming skills and being good at math are the same thing? Because after taking a look at this challenge it appears to be a math problem that requires mathematical knowledge and barely any programming knowledge.
stakecounter··on The 7 Habits of Highly Overrated People
I read that as him starting to truly pay attention and notice these behaviors in other people after the original guy had left (and not in the original guy himself).
stakecounter··on Moving forward on improving HTTP's security
The reason for your parent comment (and my initial misunderstanding) was because this post title was submitted as "HTTP 2.0 to be HTTPS only". By the time I refreshed the title was changed, but this is why we need to stop modifying original article titles in order to bait more views.
stakecounter··on Inputs.io hacked – 4100 BTC stolen
If the owner is either incapable or unwilling to refund everybody's money then it doesn't even matter whether it was an inside job or not. It's pretty telling that he's posting a screenshot that essentially says nothing instead of being open about whether or not he'll be able to fully reimburse the people who lost money. I don't think it was explicitly stated, but it seems like people are just getting whatever percentage of the remaining funds that they owned.
stakecounter··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
You can't influence the outcome of a lottery ticket (aside from picking rarely chosen number sets). You can influence company success. In practice there is still a difference.

Edit: I'm responding to the general idea of startup equity being equal to a lottery ticket. I haven't read the specific job posting in question.

stakecounter··on Model S Fire
By your "hole in one" argument, Tesla is "doubtful" to keep up their pace of one fire per 100 million miles. In other words, their "true" fire rate is actually less than one per 100 million.
stakecounter··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
That may be true now, but we've seen very recently how powerful government orders can be. I could easily see it starting with "we do not upload fingerprints" to "we only send fingerprints at the request of government warrants" to something much more massive down the road.
stakecounter··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
I think the "Touch ID" fingerprint matching that was just revealed is way more interesting than their performance improvements. I wonder why they chose to order the announcements like that.
stakecounter··on Facebook friends could change your credit score
That clearly makes sense economically, and I know this already exists (car insurance, for example), but I don't think many people would agree with this on a social level. A security camera with great AI might only follow the black people in a crowded store because it makes sense statistically. But putting people at an unfair disadvantage for what they can't control is a slippery slope.
stakecounter··on Facebook friends could change your credit score
So are you saying that if being black is correlated with a lower rate of loan payback, that is a fair indicator for raising their interest rate? It's not clear to me where you think the line should be drawn, if at all, given a strong correlation.
stakecounter··on NY Comptroller: Legalise marijuana, tax it and end wrongheaded war on pot
Are you suggesting that "might be unsafe" is all the reason needed to legally withhold the right of a person to do something to his/her own body?
stakecounter··on Elm at Prezi
> The world seems to be intent on writing mountains of code to avoid writing javascript, and usually ending up with a system that compiles to more javascript than if they just wrote javascript.

Does it really matter how much javascript gets created? That statement could be made for any higher level language where X lines of the higher level language compiles into 5X lines of the target language. Maybe you could hand write your program in the target language using only 4X lines, but the point of the higher level language is to make it easier for the programmer to avoid mistakes as well as reduce source code size, not necessarily compiled code size.

stakecounter··on Our SQL interview questions
It does not apply to the first question, but how does the ORM handle joined columns from other tables? Is it embedded somewhere in the returned object? The best way I could think to handle this using an ORM would be for the object to contain a set of arbitrary key/value pairs to contain joined columns but it seems like a hack.
