stagger87··on Ask HN: Examples of large acquisitions that did not ruin the acquired company?
This happens all the time. It is essentially the business strategy of many (not all!) conglomerates. Scoop up successful companies and let them keep running as they are, sometimes with even greater success due to things like access to money and peers. I've worked for a few subsidiaries through the acquisition process, and aside from some accountants showing up once a year, everything remained the same.
stagger87··on The Windows malloc() implementation from MSVCRT is slow
I'm able to search chats on my phone and PC and go to that message when I search, and get all the context around it. Even messages that are several years old. I just tested it. Maybe it's just your Teams settings?
stagger87··on How does a USB keyboard work? (2021) [video]
> I've seen other examples of creators doing great work who are seemingly impossible to dislike, and STILL receive harassment to a point of not wanting to continue (e.g. Handmade Hero)

Are you saying that Casey Muratori is "seemingly impossible to dislike"? Isn't he still doing HH?

stagger87··on The Windows malloc() implementation from MSVCRT is slow
PEBKAC, you can scroll and search chats in teams.
stagger87··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
Not only that, he seems to be OK with these 80% making <= minimum wage. Fun!
stagger87··on Ask HN: Any certification that is worth it? Legitimately helped your career?
Maybe not exactly what you're looking for but my M.S. was invaluable. Needed it to get into R&D roles, lots of people assumed I was smarter just for having it (it was in a specialized field).
stagger87··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Do they tweet stuff like this?

stagger87··on Reddit acquires ML startup Spell
Primarily for ads I would guess.
stagger87··on The human toll of Fallout 76’s launch
I don't know the exact issue they are referencing, but if I had to guess... these sorts of multiplayer games typically have respawning enemies that are shared with everyone in the world. If you respawn them too slowly, then you will have tons of people standing around waiting for an enemy to respawn. A quest might require you to kill 10 of those enemies. You can see how this might be a problem. Smart games do this dynamically based on current populations.
stagger87··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
> that you want cities that make middle class white folks feel safe

I don't see where they say this.

> "there are too many poor brown folks in the city"

This comes off as projection.

> What specifically do you think needs to change for that to be true?

They listed several things.

stagger87··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
It's boring executive marketing speak, and it's prevalent worldwide, not just in the US.
stagger87··on Tech Salaries in 2022: Why the Six Figure Pay Makes Techies Feel Underpaid
This can be said for every profession.
stagger87··on Skiing Mt. Everest
If you find the original documentary linked in the other comment lacking in visuals, people are still doing this today and with modern cameras it's breathtaking.

stagger87··on I've used all the notebooks
Top flight grid lined composition notebook for 99 cents on back to school sale. Done.
stagger87··on My living room still has 3 TVs but I have regrets
This is not an appropriate comment for this forum.
stagger87··on StarBook 14-inch
1920x1080 is 2k BTW.
stagger87··on Elon has decided not to join our board
The investor is always right.

That being said, I agree, if only because it makes for boring reading and comes off as disingenuous.

stagger87··on Windows 11 may not be as popular as Microsoft had hoped
Why wouldn't they just stay on win10? It's not like it's going anywhere?
stagger87··on Linux Developer Laptops: Dell's Precision 5500 series reigns supreme (2019)
Feel free to use my link to see more business laptops with Linux. There's 7 on my link and they are all configurable.
stagger87··on Linux Developer Laptops: Dell's Precision 5500 series reigns supreme (2019)
https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/overview/cp/linuxsystem...

This link shows their Linux lineup. Seems they cover all 3 laptop sizes 13/15/17 both in an ultra book form factor and a bulkier port rich model. What more were you hoping for? I personally think it's a good thing they limit the pre-installed Linux models to their professional/business line of laptops. Supporting Linux on every model is probably a waste of time.

stagger87··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
The WIFI beacon he received is likely using the 1Mbps DSSS 802.11b PHY, which has 11dB of processing gain which also helps quite a bit here.
stagger87··on My Stripe Tax Story
You're making some huge hand wavy statements based on this single anecdote...
stagger87··on Amazon to close all of its physical bookstores and '4-star' shops
The top floor of Powell's now has a large technical section, but it's not quite a replacement.
stagger87··on Amazon to close all of its physical bookstores and '4-star' shops
Yes, and they were quite fun to browse. They were laid out in a way that books next to each other would be "recommended" for each other. In that way, you would often find a group of books that were interesting to you.

As others said, it was covers out, which in my opinion only had the downside of having limited shelf space.

stagger87··on Single binary executable packages
What about a fully self contained folder? No need to statically link everything, on Windows and on Linux you can dynamically link to local files in a provided folder. Plus the folder provides a place to store local/temp files as well. This is how I deploy software on Windows and Linux, and I find it saves a lot of headaches.
stagger87··on Open source 5G core network base on 3GPP R15
The 3gpp specs that define these components are freely available.
stagger87··on NanoVNA: Low-cost handheld 4GHz vector network analyzer
Who you're responding to is correct.
stagger87··on Digital Signal Processing in Modern Communication Systems
OP, is this your book? If so, can you talk about it? I never came across the first ed. It looks extremely practical compared to a typical comms book. I suspect that's due to the author coming from an extensive industry background.
stagger87··on Do things, tell people (2012)
It's eye opening once you realize that most interesting ideas are simply iterations or slight improvements on existing ones. Simply releasing a similar product with one additional feature, or at a cheaper price point can excite the right people. In my experience most ideation comes from building a product. Spend enough time in a product space or market and you will naturally come across "interesting" ideas. I put interesting in quotes, because when you are in that space, the idea of iterating on a product may seem obvious or mundane, but if you can execute, and convince the customer, it's anything but.
