stagger87··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
In many places, USA including, you can have trademarks with the same names as long as you are in different markets.

They have since added the ability to do this.
stagger87··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee.
stagger87··on Emergency SOS via satellite
You have to point the phone at the sky for long periods of time AND track the sat position in the sky while you do it. It's probably some long spread spectrum approach (lots of processing gain), as well as I'm sure a bunch of other cool tricks/techniques.
stagger87··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
How much of a topic clicking is just reading from several different sources, rather than one source being particularly "good"? I often joke with a coworker that we don't fully understand a topic until we have read several textbooks/papers on it. It doesn't really matter how good any one text is. I've always wondered what the mechanism is for this. Is is just a certain amount of exposure to a topic? Or is there truly something different enough about the way different authors present material that once you have read from a few, things connect differently?

That being said, how many people are citing specific sources, when it was really just additional exposure to a topic that helped something "click"?

stagger87··on Windows 11 runs on fewer than 1 in 6 PCs
I was really disappointed to find out that you can no longer setup a new Win11 machine without creating a MS account. No internet connection during Win installation? Too bad, can't install Windows 11. I had to buy a USB to network adapter since I couldn't install any of the MB network drivers, since ya know, I was still trying to install Windows...

FWIW: Once logged in, you can create a local account and remove the MS linked account. A small consolation.

Engineering a physical product. Maybe not the norm on this forum, but certainly the norm for many engineering jobs.

stagger87··on Qt 6.4
I apologize for the confusion. I was addressing the remark,

New projects are typically encouraged to use QML I think

I wasn't wondering where they were putting their development time.

stagger87··on Qt 6.4
Can you provide a source for this?
stagger87··on Qt 6.4
Super viable. I'm aware of several companies using the LGPL license for their closed source desktop applications, including my own. Don't let the other replies scare you. No one will call and threaten you and you don't need a lawyer. For cross platform native desktop applications, Qt is far and away the best option. QtCreator is pretty awesome too.

stagger87··on Ask HN: Should CTO own company shares?
As a counter to some of the responses here, I would wager that in most small companies, zero employees have equity. Experiences from people on this forum are probably skewed, for obvious reasons.

That being said, if equity isn't an option and you feel you are underpaid, then ask for a raise. As a key employee at my company I knew I wasn't going to get equity and negotiated a ridiculous salary. I don't think about equity anymore.

stagger87··on Amazon’s $23M book about flies (2011)
Yea sorry for the confusion, this was mostly a response to the other comments talking about it being money laundering.
stagger87··on Amazon’s $23M book about flies (2011)
Occam's razor. Automated pricing, not laundering, lol. Amazon provides an interface for it. Provide rules for automatically updating price. Very common in the online book market.

stagger87··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
As far as being instrumental, it's the usual suspects. Better role, salary, respect, job satisfaction, confidence, etc. It doesn't happen overnight, you still have to consistently perform. It's also what you make of it. If you get a degree that you never use and no one knows about, your life might not change much. I personally used my degree to help me tackle more challenging projects and work towards being an authority in my field. I found success in that, not everyone does.

It took about 3 years to complete the degree.

stagger87··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
There are still a huge number of industries and fields in the engineering and sciences that require graduate degrees and that will not be changing anytime soon.
stagger87··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
I started an MS in applied math in my very late 30s only having a BS in CS. I did it one class at a time, and it was relatively easy to juggle with work and family. At the time, I was looking at a lot of jobs that required an MS, which was the original motivation for starting it. I ended up not needing it in that way, but it has still been instrumental in my career and I don't regret it.

I paid out of pocket and it has financially been worth it. A lot of companies will pay for it, but I wasn't in that position. If a company pays for it they might want you to agree to work for them several years after you finish.

If you don't love learning and being in school, it's going to be a long unenjoyable slog. If you're only doing it for money or vanity, that may not be enough to carry you through the hundreds to thousands of hours of study and homework you will have to do.

You will encounter a lot of naysayers, as you have already seen in this thread. This includes family and friends.

You will also get better advice in a different forum. A sub reddit dedicated to your industry for instance?

Actually no, good point. Whether you know him or not, it's in poor taste to trash talk on the internet. It's against site guidelines anyways.

Be kind. Don't be snarky.

Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive

Eschew flamebait. Avoid unrelated controversies, generic tangents, and internet tropes.
