st1ck··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index

st1ck··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
How else is BTC miner supposed to pay for expenses?
st1ck··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
Seriously. There are many US-based remote positions e.g. in Who is hiring threads, but most of them are still limited to US residents.
st1ck··on FBI warns of plans for nationwide armed protests next week
I wouldn't be worried too much about fabrication by journalists. I assume most of those "leaks" are intentionally dispersed by 3-letter agencies as kind of unofficial press releases.
st1ck··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
Ctrl+L seems to work for me.
st1ck··on JetBrain's TeamCity May Be Entry Point for U.S. Hack
In Europe, words like Russian or Czech typically mean ethnicity. Even if you live there for 20 years, learn the language and get citizenship, people likely won't call you Czech. Maybe you can be called Czechian (if it's a real word) or Praguer since those don't imply ethnicity. I don't live in Czechia though, so take this with a grain of salt.

> The company is not owned by the Russian state and has never been.

This is true however, and NYT did (predictably) poor job here. Unless there is any indication that JetBrains were involved in the hack, mentioning "Russian-owned" in the title is misleading.

st1ck··on Facebook's advertising integrity chief leaves company
Yes, it is a question of vanity, not necessarily integrity. Even worse is when politicians do this, so you have Erdoğan University, or Nur-Sultan city.
st1ck··on The Great Software Stagnation
> HTML/React inspired UI library that works on all platforms, so we can do electron without wasting 99% of my CPU cycles.

There are React Native forks for Windows, MacOS and Linux. I have no idea whether any of them is "good implementation" though.

> SQL + realtime computed views (eg materialize)

ClickHouse (OLAP DB) has materialized views (but only for inserts). Also Oracle and (I guess!) Materialize DB should have it too.

> Desktop apps that can be run without needing to be installed. (Like websites, but with native code.)

AppImage (and maybe Snap and Flatpak) is like this. Also technically, with Nix you can just run something like

    nix-shell -p chromium --command chromium
(without root), but it feels like cheating.

> Git but for data

https://github.com/dolthub/dolt (again, never tried it yet, but would like in future)

st1ck··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I guess based on https://github.com/yarrick/iodine ? You could also run your own server.
st1ck··on Ditching Excel for Python in a legacy industry
Python version of data.table has very fast CSV parsing (compared to Pandas), and it didn't have issues like those you mention. Even if data.table had issues with CSV parsing, you could probably use Apache Arrow to parse CSV into arrow table and then convert it to data.table (but that is probably suboptimal).
st1ck··on Domino’s Pizza drove increase in stock value by acting like a startup
Higher fat content also means more satiating, so you won't feel hungry shortly after eating. If all of the ingredients are healthier than McD, that should be a clear win. OTOH I don't think burger is a good choice for a healthy meal anyway. I'd choose a hipster version primarily for taste and aesthetics.
st1ck··on How and why I stopped buying new laptops
Another nice feature of old enough CPUs is that they don't have IME.
st1ck··on The Ampere Altra Review: 2x 80 Cores Arm Server Performance Monster
But you can view images in terminal emulator. Not every one, but kitty, alacritty, st, iTerm2 for MacOS, etc. should support it. This works for me (need to install ueberzug, e.g. via pip):

    { declare -p c=([action]=add [identifier]=0 [x]=0 [y]=0 [width]=80 [height]=80 [path]="mypic.png") ; sleep 5;} | ueberzug layer --parser bash
st1ck··on GitHub Dark Mode is too Dark
It's a little bit too dark, but overall just fine. Author's blog is also fine, although for me it's annoying when dark mode is default. I have global userstyle in Stylus which inverts color brightness on webpages (except images), so most of normal websites (like HN) are white-on-black for me. So please keep your website styles default black-on-white, and optionally add a setting for dark mode.
st1ck··on Common Expression Language
if/else doesn't have to be a statement:

    max = if a < b then b else a
You may also like `jq` syntax with `elif`s:

    if cond1 then res1 elif cond2 then res2 ... else res end
st1ck··on Expanding Fuchsia's open source model
> However, the "bazaar" is also a bit of a myth in this regard. I'm not really aware of any open source projects where I can go submit a PR without talking to anybody and have the expectation that it'll be merged without discussion

The word "bazaar" alone should imply discussions, including some haggling and shouting. If no discussions were expected, it should've been called supermarket or something like that.

st1ck··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
Authorities in the US and Europe did essentially say this in the early stages, and were (rightfully) criticized for such a policy by certain people. But that was admittedly pretty small percentage of population and also probably not the kind of people you have in mind.
st1ck··on S3 Strong Consistency
So you're concerned about printing 1 copy for home or office, but not about sharing this image on the internet?
st1ck··on A free-as-in-freedom re-implementation of Google’s Android user space
It's generally be better for one's sanity to not get instant notifications anyway. But if you need them, you can also get Slack notifications over email. Or maybe you can set up a bridge and use some Matrix client (one less proprietary app on your phone then).
st1ck··on Parse, don’t type-check
Note that Python applies same logic to other operators, which can be pretty unintuitive:

    1 in [1,2,3] is True
evaluates to False.
st1ck··on I created an alternative to the YouTube algorithm to stop me wasting time
Even better, don't login and clear cookies frequently (Cookie AutoDelete addon, or just incognito mode). I just hid recommendations div with adblock. Still, in the end of every video there are 9 top recommendations displayed, so I'm not losing on anything.

I have maybe 4 channels I check out from time to time, and all of them post new videos pretty irregularly, so there is not much point in managing subscriptions. That said, I recently started using NewPipe on mobile and have subscriptions there.

st1ck··on Winding down my Debian involvement (2019)
fast, but more typing: `nix-env -iA nixos.packageName`
st1ck··on Firefox 83 introduces HTTPS-Only Mode
As others pointed out, you can set it up to always upgrade to HTTPS and warn you when it's not supported. But that's not gonna work all the time: some websites will have self-signed certificates (which is better that nothing I guess), some will return 403 or 404 (for HTTPS only), some will just not load after trying for half a minute.
st1ck··on Chili pepper consumption associated with 25% reduction in death from any cause
What does make roti healthy? Do you mean the kind which is made from wholewheat unleavened flour? Even that doesn't qualify as "healthy" for me, although it's better (and tastier!) than most others kinds of bread.
st1ck··on Chili pepper consumption associated with 25% reduction in death from any cause
Another downside of soybeans is that its production causes deforestation and other environmental changes in areas like Amazon. See e.g. https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/the-story-of-soy

That said, soybeans are mostly used to feed livestock, so if you just eat meat instead of soy, that's likely not any better for environment.

st1ck··on Eleven Years of Go
misread as

> But if you come from doing shell scripting in C

Sure I'd switch to Go in no time!

st1ck··on Ask HN: Alternatives to q/kdb?
Probably not what you want, but I was looking for a while how I can get rid of Pandas, and for the most part ClickHouse (DBMS for analytics) can do almost everything Pandas does (for my use case at least) and much more efficiently. It has very good support of array types, so it's pretty convenient for slightly nested data. Whatever you can't do completely in ClickHouse, you can export into Parquet/JSON/CSV/etc. and finish the analysis in Pandas or anywhere else.

Just be aware that ClickHouse is still somewhat experimental and idiosyncratic DBMS, doesn't have some SQL goodies like window functions or B+Tree indexes, or pivots. They only added CTE support a week ago, I haven't even tried it yet.

st1ck··on HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service”
If you print only occasionally, wouldn't it be easier to just use a print shop? Not sure how common they are in the US though.
st1ck··on Color-balancing vote margins and vote totals in the US election map
Exactly. It'd only make sense when 2 counties, each with area S and N votes would have same color as a county with area 2 * S and 2 * N votes.
st1ck··on Migrating Dropbox from Nginx to Envoy
It's good for Dropbox, since they use Bazel.
