ssn··on The PageRank Citation Ranking: Bringing Order to the Web (1998) [pdf]
But does it work in practice? It doesn't seem to. PageRank is mostly a marketing tool.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/hits-on...

"The fact that in-degree features outperform PageRank under all measures is quite surprising. A possible explanation is that link-spammers have been targeting the published PageRank algorithm for many years, and that this has led to anomalies in the web graph that affect PageRank."

ssn··on Web Decay Graph
You can find a lot of academic research on this area: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=web+decay
ssn··on UML in Practice
How do you document a web application?
ssn··on Why Did The Media Keep The Recent Peaceful Icelandic Revolution Quiet?
Please check this recent essay:

What is Actually going on in Iceland http://studiotendra.com/2012/12/29/what-is-actually-going-on...

Can somebody help and make sense of these contradictory perspectives?

ssn··on Collapsible comments for Hacker News
Why isn't this implemented on HN natively?
ssn··on The Exodus of Tech from Portugal
The so called 'exodus' that Portugal is suffering from isn't limited to the tech industry. It affects all areas and is directly related to the current 'impoverishment' politics being followed in the country.

While interesting, this essay is very shortsighted.

ssn··on Single page apps in depth (new free book)
What distinguishes a book is the 'form factor'. Obviously we are talking about an e-book. Nonetheless little care has been put into producing a 'book': not TOC, no index, no page numbers, etc.

(Obviously this is all independent of the content.)

ssn··on Single page apps in depth (new free book)
Don't call this a 'book'. I know it is a great plug but it is simply not true.
ssn··on Show HN: HackerNew for Chrome
Missing expand/collapse comment threads.
ssn··on We work a 4-day week and just raised $4.75m
The piece doesn't answer the most important question -- how?

Side note: I wish there was a site like "The Setup" focused on the next phase -- "how do I work".

ssn··on Show HN: Graph of wikipedia articles semantic similarity (LSI, Python, d3.js)
Down?
ssn··on Why I Left Google
Google is at trouble. They are following Facebook on the web/search front, and following Apple on the mobile/media front. What are they leading?
ssn··on Square Register
Any update on when this will be available in european countries?
ssn··on Ask HN: Why is "Create Application Shortcut…" dimmed in Chrome for Mac?
Maybe getting this post to HN's front page would increase its priority.

ssn··on Introducing non-technical people to LaTeX
My suggestion: teach people how to use Markdown and then use markdown2pdf (which first converts to Latex and then to PDF).
ssn··on Texts Editor - True WYSIWYG Markdown
Two feature suggestions: view and edit source and pandoc integration with a "View as..." menu option.
ssn··on Introducing Chrome for Android
Why only "in selected countries"?
ssn··on The Asus MacBook Air, sort of
I view this as a positive thing -- imitating the best seems an excellent approach. Inovation comes next.
ssn··on Google+ launches ‘Ripples’ visualisation
Ironic?
ssn··on Suggest PG: Put ads on HN and donate revenue
Do you think that something like the deck ( the ad network for designers ) would make sense for developers?

Ads are not uninteresting by design.

ssn··on Persona - A concept email client
Is this being developed?

I think that there are some original and interesting ideas in there.

ssn··on Google made my son cry
It is not only a matter of law but also a matter of law enforcement.
ssn··on Fabrice Bellard [pdf]
Maybe the rankings are measuring the wrong things.
ssn··on The Dark Side of Hadoop
Shouldn't Hadoop users help to document it and contribute to it? Why isn't this happening?
ssn··on Drugs lose effictiveness in Space
Wonder if diseases are also affected.
ssn··on [dead]
Recently I reported a YouTube video that explicitly shows a murder. The video (and multiple copies of it) is still online. This video made the headlines in portuguese 'populist' media. It is really disgusting and I think that Google should really make this a top priority -- not promoting this explicit and real violence. What should I do to get Google's attention?
ssn··on "Diff for HN": Update and highlight changes
If you need a tool like this, I would recommend turning on the anti-procrastination HN filter.
ssn··on Getting to Know Americans
The page seems to have been removed from nyu.edu. Strange.
