ssheth··on Voyager 1 hears the hush of interstellar plasma
One of the most important parts of the Voyager is apparently a little motor that rotates every 192 seconds to take 360 degree readings of the sky. Each rotation is called a "step" in their lingo .. they built it to run a few thousand steps (or about 4-5 years). And that little motor has now run over 5 _million_ steps over 48 years... and is still running.

ssheth··on Tesla’s charging stations left other manufacturers in the dust
There is an "overarching" standard now .. CCS and a couple of older standards .. J1772 and ChaDeMo .. but when Tesla was getting started making chargers, there was no critical mass around any standards so they ended up creating their own.

There's a free tool called Windows Update MiniTool that works very well for disabling auto-updates and then allowing you to update manually every so often. That is what we install on our CNC machinery that have a Windows 10 backend.

ssheth··on Tesla Autopilot tricked into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with modified sign
Yes ... the older Teslas have the MobilEye chipsets which use this technology. Many other cars use the same MobilEye chipsets today .. so potentially could be an issue in other cars as well.

Its likely now that this error was pointed out that Tesla may add some speed limit validation code to ensure a car doesn't speed up much when a speed limit jumps by more than 25% or something like that..

ssheth··on Tesla races past $100B in market valuation
The Chryler Pacifica PHEV is basically a half EV van .. plugin hybrid with 30+ miles of electric-only range (with another 300-400 miles of hybrid/gas range)

An all EV van would be great but this is closest you can come today.

ssheth··on Tesla races past $100B in market valuation
Ionity just came out with a _500%_ increase in cost of charging starting in February.

https://electrek.co/2020/01/17/ionity-increases-electric-veh...

Tesla charges about €0.33/kWh at most in Europe whereas Ionity will be charging €0.79/kWh .. which will make EV charging even more expensive than gas at that point.

This type of crazy price structures are why none of the EV charging networks can get enough traction / users to actually be profitable and build even more stations.

ssheth··on Tesla Q4 2019 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
We bought a Chrysler Pacifica PHEV (plugin hybrid) minivan back in March 2018 and its been running fairly well. It has about 30-35 mile electric-only range and with my wife mostly doing just local in-city driving, we usually can get about 80-90% of the miles as electric-only.

It seats 7 comfortably and while not fully electric, it scratches our electric-car itch fairly well. Even in hybrid-only mode, we can get 28-30 mpg .. and in "electric" mode, it registers as about 65-75 mpg.

Model 3 (Performance Series (more HP) w. All-Wheel Drive)
ssheth··on Tesla Q3 2018 Vehicle Safety Report
Probably because when you're off autopilot, Tesla drivers (including me) are much more alert and aware of what's going on compared to a normal car where you have to alert/aware the whole time and in so doing, tend to "zone out" when doing monotonous driving. I tend to use Autopilot for the monotonous driving parts .. and then take over myself if there is something that needs more attention (construction, weather conditions, crazy drivers, etc.)
ssheth··on BMW's Apple CarPlay annual fee is next-level gouging
They are delivering a superior battery with more capacity and performance than what you actually ordered. The only difference is that they figure to make up the difference when eventually the car is sold back to tesla and then they can "activate" the extra part of the battery of the owner didn't already pay for the extra upgrade somewhere along the way and then resell the car for much more than what they paid since the car is now a couple models better.
