Hrmmm. This strategy sounds dangerously familiar.

Making Money? Who cares... Just buy shit that looks cool.

sscheper··on Get Things Done Like a Zen Master
Floodfx -- Amazing article. Thanks. I've never seen that, but I am a big fan of GTD (who he mentions).

Thanks a lot. Bookmarked.

sscheper··on The story BCG offered me $16,000 not to tell
Agreed. The only retired consultants I've met had white hair (most didn't even have hair).
sscheper··on Ask HN: Are web 2.0 to-do lists just hype?
Hey Todone -- Nope. Didn't see your post; looks interesting, though. I really like the simple nature of your list. I like that if focuses on effectiveness, and important items.
sscheper··on Ask HN: Setting Goals
imp -- Thanks for the insight. I really need to re-read Think and Grow Rich. Awesome link. Had no idea Bruce Lee did that.
sscheper··on Ask HN: Setting Goals
Damn good insight, Cianestro. Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

I like how you've made it so simple and action oriented.

You're speaking of flow when you mentioned "Wow, I've been working for 2 hours! Better take a quick break." I definitely think that's a good gauge of setting the right goal, or at least doing what you were meant to do.

sscheper··on Ask HN: I'm way too shy, please help
Don't want this to come off rude, but here's my tip: Get outside.
sscheper··on Twitter, As We Knew It, Is Dead: The 7 New Dependable Ways to Use Twitter
What's weight mess mean?

I admit, I'm definitely not a designer, and I'm looking for feedback.

I'll update the header look/feel.

sscheper··on Twitter, As We Knew It, Is Dead: The 7 New Dependable Ways to Use Twitter
Heh, yea -- I'm not sure the value with Twitter isn't extremely exaggerated, though. It's a news source middle-man.
sscheper··on Twitter, As We Knew It, Is Dead: The 7 New Dependable Ways to Use Twitter
Yea, looking back, I agree... I cringe at Twitter 2.0, but I feel for people that aren't familiar with technology, it will get the point across.

The Network Effect, you're probably right there. I'll update that. Thanks.

On #3, lol... exactly.

sscheper··on Twitter, As We Knew It, Is Dead: The 7 New Dependable Ways to Use Twitter
Hahahaha, I never thought about that, but if it gets me traffic, I'm in trouble.
sscheper··on Getting Real About Office Hours
I agree with this post.
sscheper··on Ask HN: "Basic SEO"?
My advice:

1. Content is king, obviously, but get inbound links through guest posts

2. The rest is details

The details: 1. Use alt img text to describe images

2. Use hyperlinks with solid naming conventions: http://www.localseoguide.com/yelp-seo-analysis-part-one/

and not

http://www.localseoguide.com/p=188270

3. Use rel=nofollow for links that you don't want the search engine to pick up.

For instance, if you're an amazon affiliate, your links should look like:

<a href="http://amazon.com/product/affiliateid=blahblah rel="nofollow">name of amazon product</a>

4. Pick a title tag that you think people will search (e.g. "How to Lose Weight," not your post title, "Amazing thing that I did last month")

6. Add certain pages to your robot.txt file that you don't want to get picked up (i.e. your privacy policy or terms).

7. Ensure that there are no broken links within your site (internal broken links)

8. Have keywords and a metadescription on each page

sscheper··on How Software Engineers and Designers Can Increase Their Focus
Hey Whimsy -- It depends on how you define profound. I think simple, common sense practices can be profound without needing deep stories, data or figures backing it up.

Let me know what other types of focus activities have helped you out. I'll include a chapter or piece on it.

- Scott

P.S. I've been using RescueTime and it's also a good addition in using focus tools

sscheper··on Ask HN: Any good stories you have about writing?
Wow, raffi. That's really neat stuff. I'll have to check it out.

Have you seen a new product called http://scribeseo.com

You could perhaps get a bundle deal going with those guys? However, the trick would be balancing seo and writing for the reader.

Anyways, great stuff. Thanks a lot.

sscheper··on Show HN: My Weekend Project -- A Clone of HN Built on Pligg
Yea. I've taken a big break. I actually created that over the weekend a while back. I'll be kicking it into gear soon and getting it prepped for release
sscheper··on Show HN: My Weekend Project -- A Clone of HN Built on Pligg
Pligg was pretty easy to pick up; however, I've been using wordpress for a year (which is how I got my feet wet with some development items). Feel free to ping me with any questions!

Make sure you don't use their control panel editor to edit the header file; with multiple themes I've experienced situations where components get messed up.

sscheper··on Show HN: My Weekend Project -- A Clone of HN Built on Pligg
I know it's not identical; but I'm proud of it considering I've never taken a class in any programming language...
sscheper··on Stuff
We have too many things that do too many things.
sscheper··on Ask HN: Sleeping Hacks
The chapter will be as long as it needs to be. Don't know how many words it will take. Some of my chapters are brisk, whereas other chapters need some more context to get the point across.

Polyphasic sleep definitely looks like it will make the cut. In fact, that may be a major component--I'll have to try this out. Thanks, fragmede.

sscheper··on Jason Fried interview at Big Think
Very interesting interview. Completely agree about the whole interruptions and meeting segment. I do believe, though, that he's a bit wrong about advertising. Nerds don't like advertising; however, it works well for the masses. Your grandma, mom and sister aint paying for api access to a phone--they'll click on a Godiva Chocolate ad, though. Sad, but true.

Overall, good interview.

sscheper··on Flash Crash (Warning, may crash your browser)
Well, it works.
sscheper··on How Software Engineers and Designers Can Increase Their Focus
Great point, Josh. I wrote in my recent chapter about ditching my cell phone that there's different "tools for different fools."

All one can really do is try and help people with things that have helped them

sscheper··on Confessions of a Book Pirate
Excellent story. Thanks for the share, blasdel. The wall street journal had an interesting article on this subject, as does Leo from Zenhabits.net

I recently decided to undergo a similar writing experiment on the concept of focus (http://howtogetfocused.com/) in which I use a technique that's like a freemium model...

This philosophy centers on the following characteristics:

Writing the book using a blogging platform (I’m using Wordpress) Listing one main author, and listing many contributing authors (you, the reader, are a contributing author if you comment) Releasing the book 100% for free online (and selling the offline format) Sourcing the book’s editor to the readers (Readers comment on each chapter suggesting spelling changes, organization changes, ideas and illustrations Crowd-sourcing the book’s design

sscheper··on Pure CSS new 3D effect
That looks great. No trying to be a dick, but what's the point?
sscheper··on Startup Equity For Employees
I've heard those types of figures, too, but never read anything that backed it up with specific examples. I also understand that shares are vested over a certain period of time; i.e. 0.25% each quarter

Though it's different for each startup, anyone have any specific examples of fair compensation?

sscheper··on The Pain of Fame
Great link, grellas. The New Yorker recently had an interesting article on Andy Warhol. Very Michael Jackson'ish type of guy... It's really simple; when one builds a foundation on weird things, instead of values, weird things are bound to happen.

Here's the New Yorker article: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/01/11/100111fa_fact_...
