srndh··on Why most Hacktoberfest PRs are from India
I think you are referring to the Youtube gurus teaching stuff.

Its actually 2 fold, the short term goal of raking up some youtube views and getting the youtube ad money. Second is to pad the CV as an "advanced developer with lots of knowledge to share", it helps to put on CV and also be considered for some training positions which is demand as many are rushing to get into tech where "even kids are minting money".

I know a guy that put up some coding videos on youtube to be a "youtuber" and one of the big tech firms in India hired him to train their new recruits.

srndh··on FinCEN Files: HSBC moved Ponzi scheme millions despite warning
They were reports of them being the official banker for Al Qaeda. HSBC is a mob bank.
srndh··on Ask HN: How are online communities established?
Why not start a subreddit on reddit and use the wiki for a blog? Just an idea, I have no experience running a subreddit. Plus I am sure a Dave Matthews Band fan community wouldn't offend anyone. So, reddit can foot the bill for your community. Just keep a backup incase of issue.
srndh··on Ask HN: How are online communities established?
how is it doing now after 20 years? I feel the real challenge is once the community comes together, it invites or makes new comers feel comfortable. Also usually old members just move on for various reasons.
srndh··on Jeffrey Epstein’s Harvard connections show how money can distort research
People try to classify everything around them in binary. As its easy to just label people. But the fact they fail to understand is that no one is just "good" or "bad". You have to evaluate each of the actions and weigh it. This is tough and most don't do it.

No one is black or white, they are just shades of grey.

srndh··on Ask HN: How do you drive traffic to your side projects?
I have not seen your project earlier. I just checked it out.

Here is my feedback, hope it helps you.

First off, instead of showing off an api calls & response, show a use case. Make a simple site that utilises the API, then in the details page show the calls & response. Don't make api details your whole site.

I am someone that plays cards with my friends and I didn't understand the use case of the API.

API is the backend that you developed for some reason. Its nice you are sharing it. Show the reason. So that other can addon or make their own spin. Make a demo project using the API.

srndh··on Ask HN: Looking to setup my own email server – should I do it or not bother?
I have a friend who has multiple domains but all mapped to 1 mail box with catch all. There is stores those to specific address in folders and he rest in a common folder. He is using a hosting company. They charge per-email account. He was the basic 5 email account, 3 for family, 1 for himself and the last is the one with the catch-all for over 10 domains.
srndh··on Ask HN: Looking to setup my own email server – should I do it or not bother?
where is the server hosted? In your home or hosting provider or cloud? Keeping a server running 24x7 is the challenge for me as far as email is concern. What happens when your server is down and someone mails you?
srndh··on Eclipse Theia 1.0 – Open-Source Alternative to Visual Studio Code
I was hoping Eclipse/Firefox would partner with Sublime Text/NotePad++. There is enough people on electron-based text editor with Atom & VSCode variant. I was hoping a different product needs to grow.

Yes, I know ST is closed-source. But as a user, I feel that its starting to hurt ST. I personally feel (not a pro-developer), ST is better than VSCode. ST is a better match for Firefox. I am hoping that the ST developer joins Mozilla.

Notepad++ has a eclipse-lite vibe. I was hoping eclipse could help Notepad++ reach linux & mac. But please dont put it in JVM, that is the original sin of Eclipse.

We need more alternatives.

srndh··on Ask HN: How do I help my Indian coworker get a raise?
I appreciate your effort and I am just sharing a piece of information I have, in the hope that it will help you strategies a good plan of action. I don't mean to discourage you with my comments.

I was speaking to an Indian guy who now has is US passport & good job in NYC. He came to US on an on-site assignment with TCS. He said that this is how TCS & all Indian companies work, IT companies in general.

When hiring fresh graduate(beginning) in India, the first requirement to start working is a passport. Then the chance of on-site is the carrot that they (company) uses to squeeze. If the managers sense that you are close to giving your papers to resign, they will say that you are in the top list. Plus these companies flood the h1b system with applications of all their employees. Basically the companies need a carrot to whip the employee and the ultimate is a green card, after which the employees are free and is a matter of time before they quit. If you are that valuable to them, then you they pay you well to keep you. So, the companies do everything to delay the green card process.

So, this is the system that he gamed to get his freedom and now his brother is close to getting his green card at Infosys.

This is the game.

srndh··on My First AWS “Free Tier” Hosting Bill Was $990
Why not have a system of pre-paid service? Cut-off once the fund dries up. This will be ideal for a testing.
srndh··on Google Removes Metamask from the Play Store, Appeal Rejected

We serious need to do something about it.

srndh··on Citymapper
Since you are ex-CM & close to people there, I just want some perspective & feedback from you on my view.

When I first heard of CM, I felt that it should have a wikipedia/waze kinda model with user participation as its the frequent travelers that have the best insight. Like a part of OpenStreetMap. With that model it could have grown faster too.

As for revenue generation, I feel ads are the best option. As a public transport commuter, you are either a tourist or a new commuter and there would be good ways to find places. Also for budget traveller, help plan a trip via only public transport and avoid taxis.

srndh··on Boeing to Suspend 737 Max Production in January
Oh!! The tragedy...737 Max was the preferred choice for people too scared to commit suicide & people who liked to live on the edge. Every time it took-off, there was no certainty that it will land back safely. It was a technical marvel that Airbus could not even dream of and the Chinese spys are working tirelessly to steal the its design. This is an injustice.
srndh··on Pilots Revving Engines Too Hard Led to IndiGo’s Airbus Woes
Revving engines too hard?? Please explain that, I am clueless about flying a plane.

The trick to save fuel in the short-term, ended up costing more in the long terms by means of having to replace engine?

Cheap/short-sighted pilots/IndiGo management or underpowered engine fit by Airbus?

..susceptible to mid-flight shutdowns.. - With the Boeing issue, I am trying to understand if passengers life were endangered? Who is to be blamed for the issue? Pratt & Whitney for making an engine that is not efficient or IndiGo for trying to act smart or Airbus for poorly designing a plane/insufficiently training(ipad training) the pilots?

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration hasn’t established any connection between the climb procedure and engine problems, she wrote in a text message, adding that the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft remains the utmost priority. - FAA let Boeing kill 2 planes of people and only stopped them after rest of the world grounded the flight. It's not comforting to quote them to assure safety.

srndh··on Google will no longer make its own tablet devices
Your daughter is paint on ipad pro or ipad? What stylus was used?
srndh··on Google will no longer make its own tablet devices
I am doing something close. My main phone is iphone SE. The only apps in that is my podcast & my personal email account.

My rest social media including whatsapp in another device.

srndh··on Google will no longer make its own tablet devices
Just to clarify, ipad or ipad pro?
srndh··on Gut microbes eat medication
Reading this, I cannot help but wonder.

We are clueless about the gut microbes in our body, but know a lot about dinosaurs. Most of the ocean floors remain inaccessible, yet we have a picture of the black hole. We have no idea where exactly are airplanes in the sky, but we are controlling rover on the surface of Mars that is sending us selfies.

I cannot help but wonder what if the Rover is actually on some unknown island on Earth itself & the picture of the black hole is actually something else.

FYI: I am just bored & hungry.

srndh··on Ask HN: How do I make sure my non-technical parents are safe online?
I am not sure how this will work between "a company & a customer". But I would like filter my parents SMS, so that they can see messages from known & trusted contacts, while I can ensure that the messages from unknown sender is not spam. 95% of unknown senders are spam.
srndh··on Ask HN: How do I make sure my non-technical parents are safe online?
I actually came to Hacker news to ask the same the question.

My Dad travelling to a different country for a month and the mobile network there was VOLTE, while at home its 3G. The phone (iphone 7) was having some issue and I was unable to help him. He took the phone to mobile shop and that guy installed a 3rd party app & made him put a passcode.

Actually the last time we travelled together & we both used that mobile network and there was no issue. So, there was no reason to put a passcode.

The issue is that when my dad has an issue, he tries to describe it to me and does not read to me exactly what he sees on the screen. It would be great if there was a remote desktop like I could see his device via my device and help him also. Also, have an admin account on the phone so that admin privileges are needed to install apps or even open the settings app.

In the past even my younger cousins or kids install apps (games or some hype app that they feel everyone must have) on his phone.

srndh··on Pornhub wants to buy Tumblr

srndh··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
Better late than never, but the main question is who are left behind and do they have the same mindset as Eric. He is the virus that has multiplied well. Just another member in the club of Gates, Ellison, Ballmer, Jobs, Zuckerberg & more.

Question is, can we undo the damage done. In 2019 lingo, reverse the Thanos snap. Not sure of Sundar but I still hope that Google twins might do the right thing.

srndh··on I made a smart watch from scratch

srndh··on Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community
Sounds like a stupid question, but I am seriously asking it.

What was the infrastructure of ASF? Own servers? Wouldn't moving to a cloud provide helped reduce cost?

Ethically speaking, isn't it a conflict of interest that an idol of the open-source world is pairing up with Microsoft. Now that Microsoft has lost the former glory, they are desperately trying present a clean image, but all their deeds of the past are still fresh. I am waiting for the MSJVM 2.0 with github & atom & VSCode.

How is the Linux or FSF or Mozilla repo hosted? Scaling issues with GIT cannot be only tackled by Microsoft & Google.
