srik··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
I’ve been experiencing much of the same as well. There seems to be some kind of oversight over keeping previously stabilized affordances intact through each upgrade, at least in the past couple of years. It’s my theory that it’s likely to do with some kind of newly introduced AI steps in their process which doesn’t care so much about small nuanced ui spots like this but check plenty of other boxes.

Another instance in watch os is the total removal of access to the app switcher And quick jump to precious app. It’s been driving me nuts.

It's less about proving a photo's truth than about attesting it.
srik··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
Good for you! Could you share the name of that particular test here? I'm confident I'm clear but might want to include that test in case I need to in the future.
srik··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When AI Bubble Bursts
This seesawing of perspectives on apple’s ai strategy reminds me of that Alan Watts story:

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.” The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”

The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.” The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”

Used to work for that model. Great device for it’s time.
srik··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
I believe their motivation leans towards tackling advertising based exploitation.

I doubt they’ll go beyond the currently bundled Safari iCloud Private Relay, which I quite appreciate actually.
srik··on Show HN: Homebrew 6.0.0
A saving grace is they're perfect for linux distros.
srik··on Show HN: Homebrew 6.0.0
I don't think homebrew allows throttling bandwidth but it does let you set maximum concurrent downloads though. I believe the default is twice number of cores; you must have quite a few :) Set this to your preference:

HOMEBREW_DOWNLOAD_CONCURRENCY

srik··on Apple's AI Can Now Change Your Passwords. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
This one is getting a lot of undue flak. Not only does it require explicit confirmation, it’s also contained entirely within the passwords app which already has access to all your passwords because you chose to trust it.

If you use this app, open it and look at how many entries fall under the “security” section. Everyday another password is compromised and added to the list, just too many to keep up. So, albeit apprehensively, I for one appreciate this feature.

srik··on Various LLM Smells
These LLM idioms are constantly being consumed every day and are bound to make it into the next, if not current, generation's vernacular. It's going to be unbearable.

There is a i18n “English” button on top right. Unless you meant something else.

I have never been more stress-free than when I was running nixos as a daily driver. Had to return to macos as primary unfortunately but still use nix as much as possible.

srik··on Helix: A post-modern text editor
Not op but I’ll vouch for the mini.nvim plugin suite. While I take advantage of their high configurability, their defaults are well thought out and I happily use some like that as well.
srik··on Helix: A post-modern text editor
Neo/vim does this with community and built-in “text objects”.

I love your website! Your url has a typo, here's it fixed in the meantime https://www.niche-museums.com
srik··on Vim 9.2
> For over 30 years, Vim has been "Charityware," supporting children in Kibaale, Uganda. Following the passing of Bram Moolenaar, the ICCF Holland foundation was dissolved […] and its remaining funds were transferred to ensure continued support for the Kibaale project. […] Vim remains Charityware. We encourage users to continue supporting the needy children in Uganda through this new transition.

I settled on vim for its technical merits but Bram using his goodwill to fund a charity like this for so long always made me feel good about my choice.

srik··on Monosketch
Likewise. I can unreservedly say it’s one of my best app purchases of all time.

srik··on Apple Creator Studio
Apple really should’ve grabbed Affinity before canva. Would’ve rounded out this suite much better.
srik··on Floss Before Brushing
Using mouthwash every time is not ideal because most mouthwashes disrupt your oral microbiome which will result in undesired side-effects like teeth staining etc.
srik··on Google flags Immich sites as dangerous
> We have an iOS app in the store for 3 years and out of the blue apple is demanding we provide new licenses that don’t exist and threaten to kick our app out.

Crazy! If you can elaborate here, please do.

srik··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
This case was different from hackclub’s usual donations. Someone spotted OXY2DEV, a prolific Neovim plugin dev, coding on his phone and shared it with the community. People rallied to raise money specifically for him, and hackclub stepped in to facilitate. The drive ended with a small surplus, and since the funds were raised only for him, they let him decide how to use it. Smart choice because in South Asia chasing service centers is such a hassle and Apple’s service process is a dream in comparison.
srik··on Lens: Lenses, Folds and Traversals
I learned lenses from the mentioned Edward Kmett video but wish I'd learned from the "Optics by Example" book instead; it's more cohesive, comprehensive and can save you a bunch of time - https://leanpub.com/optics-by-example/
srik··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
The comment also includes brand value in the next paragraph and Jony has loads of that.
