srik··on Ash Framework – Model your domain, derive the rest
They really should put something to that effect on the homepage.
srik··on One hundred and one rules of effective living
It's funny that this is by Ben Franklin, someone notorious for routinely violating at least half of these virtues.
srik··on Photographs of 19th Century Japan
They’re lovely, thank you!
srik··on The Dire Wolf Is Back
At some point far in the future, humanity will populate an entire planet with custom designed species, something like the engineers from prometheus. If only there were a way to live long enough to see all that.
srik··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
MNT reforms get more and more appealing by the day as I’ve become increasingly disillusioned by the state of current hardware offerings.
srik··on Ask HN: What less-popular systems programming language are you using?
Elm. Gonna hold on to it for as long as possible because it’s fantastic for personal projects - drama free, functional, simple, typed and comes with batteries and great errors and tooling.
srik··on Obsidian is now free for work
Works okay with iCloud but follow their iCloud setup though; it’s important for a sync related issue.
srik··on Programming with chronic pain
I'd also recommend sleeping on the floor with a couple sheets and pillows. Sounds like it should be uncomfortable, and it is for a bit, but after a while your body just adapts with postures that do wonders for spinal relaxation and relief from some back/neck pains. IANAD.
srik··on GNU Make Standard Library
TIL thank you!
srik··on Using 2 Editors Because Xcode Is Dumb
I’ve found it impossible to write Objective C on a non-Xcode editor without losing my sanity; I don’t know how you do that.
srik··on Ghostty 1.0
Performance of course but native is a big part of ghostty’s appeal; there’s an article by a neovim dev that expands on that native part a bit - https://gpanders.com/blog/ghostty-is-native-so-what/
srik··on Introducing S2
Cloud services offer giant discounts sometimes and the receiving party aren't allowed to talk about it concretely so that's probably what's happening here.
srik··on Popeye and Tintin enter the public domain in 2025 along with Faulkner, Hemingway
I love TinTin! I feel like we're going to see a ton of AI drawn TinTin fan works pop up, will be interesting to see.
srik··on What Is Vim?
To achieve something similar in vim one could use visual selection first and then run the verb on it. Helps with spotting mistakes or just tweaking selections in general. It is a tad bit tedious but a small bonus is `gv` which invokes the previous visual selection at a later point. That said selecting first isn't perfect because large selections often move the viewport around especially on small screens and that's really annoying but ahh that's life, always with the compromises.
srik··on Alzheimer's study shows ketone bodies help clear misfolded proteins
Sticking to a keto diet these days is extremely easy, so I’d suggest trying that first before heading to water fasting which requires relatively more care and preparedness. (Disclaimer: I am not a doctor though and it’s highly possible I misunderstood the article, just offering advice based on familiarity with a keto diet and water fasting.)
srik··on Gitlab names Bill Staples as new CEO
> HR had politically captured every department

Could you elaborate if you can?

srik··on Toasty, an async ORM for Rust
Yes, plain sql is indeed the bees knees but there are good ORMs like django/ecto etc. that let you consider N+1 query issues ahead of time. Most ORMs these days have escape hatches anyway. Patience might be needed to keep it all tidy but they don't necessarily have to be a mess.
srik··on Show HN: HN Update – Hourly News Broadcast of Top HN Stories
Neat! Personally hourly feels a bit much but a daily briefing that can fit inside a commute or on a short walk would be perfect. Might be the first ai podcast I'd subscribe to.
srik··on Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users
RSS is an essential component to modern web publishing and it feels scary to see how one company’s inconsideration might harm its already fragile future. One day cloudflare will get big enough to be subject to antitrust regulation and this instance will be a strong data point working against them.
srik··on How I animate 3Blue1Brown [video]
and the community fork: https://github.com/ManimCommunity/manim
srik··on Instagram deleting archived stories, turning old videos into photos
It affected a lot more people actually, including one of my old account’s main video posts, so not just stories. It wasn’t popular but still sucked because I was featuring penmanship in motion but now many of them are just static screenshots. But that’s the implicit risk when hosting on someone else’s platform so c'est la vie I guess.

srik··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
If they get the hardware right, apps should surely fill in with better use cases over time. The Verge demoed a better scenario where orion picked up on food ingredients in field of view and displayed a smoothie recipe using them.

srik··on Evan Prodromou Launches the Social Web Foundation
Thank you, I needed that context.
srik··on Who is responsible for the greatest change to our language? Teenage girls
More tangibly, kawaii culture is one of the most influential cultural revolutions to ever emerge primarily from teenage girls; so Japan is indeed a great example here.
srik··on Google Illuminate: Books and papers turned into audio
Nothing is real anymore.
srik··on Microsoft confirms that Windows 11 Recall AI is not optional
A couple years ago I wanted to try something simple for a daily driver and gave it a shot but it didn’t take long before its inadequacies became unbearable and I switched back; but they’ve been improving, so hopefully it’s much better now.
srik··on Pragtical: Practical and pragmatic code editor
Yup. I've paradoxically found it more convenient to write my neovim plugins+configuration in lua than in python with vanilla vim's python api.
