srigi··on Ask HN: How do I get in touch with US/EU developers? (attempting to network)
In country I’m living in (Czechia), there are two major “social hubs” right now:

- Backend developers are pretty active on Slack [1] - Frontend developers on the other hand are active in Facebook group [2]

Most of the discussion is held in czech and slovak languages, but if you start conversation in english, everybody will happily write you back.

There is also another, not that easy to get into, but more global hub - Toptal’s Slack. To get into Slack, you must be part of Toptal platform, which is itself a remote job platform (you find jobs there). There is channel for every country in Toptal’s Slack. I share my referal link to Toptal onboarding [3]

I'm thinking if, for these "one-off" tasks doable only with very special SW, we could utilize that APFS snapshoting feature of macOS filesystem.

1. Create snapshot 2. Install obtrusive SW, finish task 3. Restore snapshot.

Any sources for this kinds of workflow?

srigi··on “Worst cloud vulnerability you can imagine” discovered in Microsoft Azure
I remember how one of the local Azure advocates blogged how there are two specialised security teams in Azure: 1. constantly improving security by patching products 2. acting like hacker(s) are already in the system and looking for them

I believe a 3rd group should be founded - our programmers did something stupid, looking for that.

srigi··on It looks like a product but is secretly a subscription
In similar cases (me not wanting to recurring payment to happen) I just create a new virtual credit card in Revolut and dispose it right after purchase.

Passing a physical credit card info to services is like giving them universal key to my house. After some years I don't know who does have a key to my house, and I'm just living with fear that someday I find an empty house.

srigi··on PHP has been removed in macOS Monterey
Suggesting "just" brew install php as in original post is silly to me. You have to install homebrew first, which is a non-trivial task requiring root access.
srigi··on A URL Lengthener
Ahhh, devSecOps. This guys banned lastpass.com or storage.googleapis.com because of "security" in company I justed to work.
srigi··on The Entire Universe Might Be a Neural Network
Friend of mine once told: it is funny how universe on the largest scale [1] looks similar to structures of the brain.

srigi··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
1. "WoL" - web-application that runs in home network, scans selected subnet for devices, persist devices in the list. Then it allows send "Wake on Lan" packet to desired device. Ultimately this allows me to wake my computer(s) via VPN when they are shut-down and I'm not home. Wanted created a webapp for that.
srigi··on Earth and Sun
Last couple of months I started thinking about sidereal vs. solar year. The first one is determined by distant stars, the second one by our Sun.

The thing I'm thinking of is if small deviations accumulate over years, how night sky is changed at the same date across, let's say, 20 years?

srigi··on How much energy can you store in a stack of cement blocks?
Elevators are not cranes. There is always a counterweight, so "dropping" empty cabin is not generating energy. During that time you're lifting counterweight.
srigi··on Apple open-sources FoundationDB
Can you share that talk here too?
srigi··on Logs in High Sierra Show Plaintext Password for APFS Encrypted External Volumes
In my honest opinion senior developers quit from Apple long time ago (or was fired).

Then missing labor force was quickly reinforced by rushed hires of unskilled juniors.

srigi··on A Simulated Stable Planetary System with 416 Planets in the Habitable Zone
This reminds me the Kiint's ring of planets in "Reality disfunction" from Peter F. Hamilton.
srigi··on MacOS Update Accidentally Undoes Apple's “root” Bug Patch
This doesn't apply to iOS. If new iOS version come out, you should update immediately so you can test if it fit your comfort. If not, you have very limited window to come back to previous major (and hopefully still secure) version of iOS.

If you miss this window, you have two options - stay on older version waiting till new version get fixed all annoying bugs (hello iOS 11), or if you already on newer version, you're screwed - no coming back.

For this reasons I stared upgrading to newer iOS versions as soon as they are available.

srigi··on Tesla Roadster
I think there are less than 10 commercially available cars models that can do 0-60 mph within 2s.
srigi··on My VM is lighter and safer than your container
If unikernel image boots in 4ms, it can be used to directly hande incomming traffic in some cases. Does anybody have an experience with this?
srigi··on Xcode 9 is unacceptable
This is so true:

<cite> Apple's software quality is constantly degrading, especially last few years. I am sure I am not the only one who can see this fact. </cite>

srigi··on 30-Day Timelapse at Sea [video]
It really makes me think how much are we dependant on network of such cargo ships.
srigi··on Publishing with Apache Kafka at The New York Times
What would be a bigger thing is if they opened access to their monolog.
srigi··on F.lux major update
With W10 you must enable location service to enable "sunset to sunrise". If you keep LS disabled you can only mechanically set up & down times, which slowly drifts by seasons.

With f.lux you can insert your location manually.

srigi··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
Wheres the logic in that. How do you buy food or medicals in postapocalyptic world with BTC?
srigi··on Engineer defends concept circular runway idea
Under one of the original articles, in the comments section some military pilot pointed that lateral forces on big airliner on this runway would break the fuselage and gear of the plane. I'm disappointed that this argument wasn't addressed in todays article.
srigi··on No, I Don’t Want to Subscribe to Your Newsletter
How about extension with some kind of machine learning? You know, all 4 borders and all 4 corners going dark w/o user interaction. At the same time some kind of form input appear at highest z-index.

Extension would delete that DOM subtree rightaway. + some kind of cloud harvest from users reporting false-positives.

srigi··on Awesome OS X Command Line
For this kind of setup I use this very well maintained script

This dotfiles repo is even recommended by Github at https://dotfiles.github.io/

srigi··on Ask HN: What are some 'must watch' talks?
Ben Orenstein - Refactoring from Good to Great (Aloha Ruby Conf 2012)

This really changes the way you look into your OOP code. Please watch even if you're not a Ruby programmer.

srigi··on Chrome will aggressively throttle background tabs
I like the idea of pinned tab, but since they cannot be moved freely it is only halfway useful for me.

srigi··on SpaceX returns to flight with Falcon 9 rocket launch
