srejk··on The Legend of von Neumann (1973) [pdf]
When you look at it holistically, von Neumann was more influential in science and mathematics in the 20th century than either Einstein or Planck. He wasn't as obvious a symbol of the scientific revolution, but his contributions to SO MANY THINGS at a fundamental level makes him stand out to me.

Can confirm. Work for a major telco and we use ENUM internally.

I appreciate everything he stands for - he's on the right side of just about every issue. I just wish he could make more succinct and effective videos.

srejk··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Good point, but I abused it pretty well and it seemed to do OK - was also in a water bottle holder so closer to the legs than anything.
srejk··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
An hour and a bit each way, took about as much time as public transit and better than a coffee for waking up. A good road bike goes a long way, and the suburbs suck for road sharing but are great for not having to stop at many lights.

The winters were rough though.

When I was commuting 60k/day on my bike in shitty suburban conditions, I used one of these instead - you get limited use per trip, but you can always fill it up with a CO2 cylinder/bike pump:

It is loud.

Ling is okay, but a bit formal. My partner is Cambodian as well so having her help with what's "valid" or not helps a lot.

The best resource is a personal tutor, they're really affordable on Italki or Preply ($10-15/hr). I can recommend one in particular if you're interested - it's actually the same person as this youtube channel (which is also a good resource): https://www.youtube.com/@Dara-TheKhmerLesson

As an learning (and conversational) Khmer speaker, I tried the Khmer module.

It's an absolute disaster in both romanization of Khmer characters and pronounciation. Simple words like 'arkun' are pronounced _very_ incorrectly and the romanization is incomprehensible.

srejk··on Examining the silicon dies of the Intel 386 processor
Great post! Any idea how the turbo button worked? It seems like, given the transistor difference between the 8086 and 386, that merely decreasing the clock frequency wouldn't be enough?

Are you really quoting fucking human trafficker Andrew Tate on economics?

Electronic funds transfer (including credit cards) increase the velocity of money significantly. This means more transactions, which means more overall wealth creation.

To say nothing of the fact that of that 1.5% fee, I'm recovering most, all, or more than it with things like cashback, rewards points, etc.

srejk··on Postmortem: Co-founding a Web3 startup as a crypto skeptic young dev
Roll-friggin-eyes Scotsman. You think everyone that founds a startup for, say, B2B data integration Really Believes In It? Or just that there's money to be made?
srejk··on A physicist who bets that gravity can’t be quantized
Me too bestie, I haven't taken physics since undergrad but I appreciate that it's a layer of understanding above popular science (that never covers any of the math) while remaining accessible.
srejk··on A physicist who bets that gravity can’t be quantized
You have to be trained in physics to theorize about it. Thinking otherwise is the realm of the crackpot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11lPhMSulSU

srejk··on Researchers generate hydrogen more efficiently from water
Think mountain passes or similarly difficult terrain. Or lower volume cargo trains, like into and out of industrial areas in the north. Catenary networks not only take a lot of money to set up, the maintenance is huge - especially in rough terrain or over long distances!

ed: Not saying that all trains should be hydrogen, there just are use cases for some when we're talking zero-emission.

srejk··on Researchers generate hydrogen more efficiently from water
There are legitimate use cases for hydrogen. Trains are a good example - electrification of medium to long distances (through tough terrain) is prohibitively expensive, as is battery usage for the whole journey.

Trains require a lot of energy to get started (where batteries work well), but then a relatively small trickle of power is needed: hydrogen fills this niche. Big companies are investing billions into this right now.
