srcmap··on Bezos Investigation Says the Saudis Obtained His Private Data
A semi good news from this is for the politicians to know that: "If Bezos' phone can be hacked by Saudis, so can all the politicians' phones and their office workers' phones."

A good story to tell next time when politician want to enact some new law to weaken the security of phone, for Apple/Android to build security holes for the "law enforcement / governments".

In relative biological term, can "Coke" be called "an invasive species" just like Asian Carp Fish in Mississippi River?

srcmap··on My Chromecast Ultra would not start until I began answering 8.8.8.8
"Why does it matter if that connection happens via 8.8.8.8 or some other IP resolved by a different DNS server?"

By controlling the DNS server, user can early point doubleclick.net, google analytic to 0.0.0.0. That might be why google wants to control that in the Chromecast.

It is a continue war between Jedi the Hackers and the Empire. The young Anakin Skywalker - Do no evil Googlers have felt the (share holders) power of Dark Side. The power felt stronger as the G stock price kept going up.

BTW, one can also config a raspberry pi / openwrt device to have subdomain ip of 8.8.8.8 and still resolve the doubleclick.net or all other tracking websites to 0.0.0.0.

May the source be with you.

They should have area for group meeting area to host regular meetup / learning tutorial sessions for hobbyist and students.

Also a lab/work bench where anyone can plug and play different components together and experiments, measure voltage, signals with an USB oscilloscopes (make with PI? ).

Volunteers can come in regularly to demo, share info, organizer classes.

Instead of just shelf full of the products - it should also have area where it run a lot of the interesting projects found on the web AI object recognition with YOLO2|3, PI self driving car, etc

srcmap··on Israel airport security stole my laptop
I was there with Israel airport a few times. Almost every time I have company "letter" to "precheck" me with the airport security.

There was one time, the company missed issue me that letter. I had to go thru the 2 hours security hell which they inspected and questioned everything.

After that, I have decided that I would never go back to Israel again for biz or any other purposes. It is just not worth it.

srcmap··on Why I use old hardware
Recently got access to a new HW platform with 256 cores CPU, 512M of L3, 512G/1TB of RAM. The speed of that thing compiling the linux kernel and run certain AI testing are amazing. One can try out different experiments so much faster.

Used to working diff company with server farms for compiling. Even with the servers, compiling the 26G software pkg took 4 hours. When it is high noon and everyone was using it. I have seen compile jobs can last 8+ hours. There a few times that by the time compile is done, I have completely context switch out and forgot what I need to debug.

"The city is also getting ready to use the parking data to help people find a parking space. "

I can see the "real" conversations between the sales person and city officials. "We can tell you when and where exactly the parking violations is happening and guide enforcers directly to that car. This is not an expense, it is a revenue generating machine."

Every $1000 investment generate $xxxx ARR ticket revenue - easy math.

srcmap··on China’s Nreal raises $15M to shrink augmented headsets to size of sunglasses
This reminds me of the last scene of the movie "Thank you for smoking". The tobacco lobbyist was out of job when FDC declared smoking is not safe. He became the lobbyist for the cellular industry.

At that last scene, he was training the Cell phone executive: "Repeat after me: There are no conclusive evident that cell phone usage can cause brain cancer." Since I worked in Nokia at that time, that scene just etches into my mind even after so many years.

I was afraid that 20,30 years from now, some percentage of generate of kids grow up with cell phone next to their head were detected with some brain abnormality. Someone will do an experiment by putting cell phone / wifi next to lab rats and find some correlations between long extend exposure of wifi/cell signals and some kind brain damages.

Wifi/Cellular microwave can't cook turkey with its 1 watts output. But I can certain feel the warm on the side of face/ear next to it for just a few minutes. I definitively WILL NOT do that for an extend period of time.

I asked my family to reduce the bluetooth headset usage although I know for sure BT's power is much lower than wifi. Using wire headset or speaker is much better in my mind.

srcmap··on China’s Nreal raises $15M to shrink augmented headsets to size of sunglasses
I like to see the computer, battery, wifi/cellular radio, etc all be strapped to the my belt rather than next to the eye/brain. It is like installing a tiny microwave oven next to your brain and running it continuously.

Whatever on glass/goggle should just be headup display/maybe small camera with small wire connection.

srcmap··on Huawei Unveils High-Performance ARM-Based CPU
I love to the TDP # when 64 cores are running 2.6G.

Also like to know the L1, L2, L3 #.

It is hard for any system company to sell CPU. Apple is only for their own use. I believe the Samsung's AP is for their own use also.

srcmap··on Tinyalloc: replacement for malloc/free in unmanaged, linear memory situations
The blocks were actually fix in pre-allocated blocks.

When a thread, process, kernel thread "allocated" a block. It actually acquired and owned the "index" via atomic inc from the free list.

When it free the block, it put the block's index back to the "free" list.

The "free" list is actually a array. Thus the list index can be allocated and free with atomic inc, dec. Thus it can do SMP safe alloc, free operations without any locks and guarantee the correctness.

This was actually a IPC, DIPC library to support TCP session redundancy in a network router product. Other programmers call this library from user, kernel and TCP stack, etc.

Since the blocks and index are all in share memory, there are huge potential for share memory corruptions. In debug mode, there are memory space before and after each block, every allocate, free are checked for ownership, double free, and border space corruption. There are regression tests to cover all aspect of API calls that were run 24/7 check for every commit. When not compile with debug mode, the operations were much faster but there were still quite a bit of assertions check in place.

There were a debug trace system that track all system activities (including Linux, QNX, vxwork context switches.) The log is actually in special region of memory that preserved over warm boot. If the system was completely hang, in 99% of cases, I can recover the memory to do post mordem analysis and know exactly the last user, kernel space threads that were running before the system crash. It was more useful for vxWork, less useful for Linux as majority of code were in user space and didn't take down the system.

The regression test coverage code and the debug mode validations were 80% of code. The actually implementations were very small.

srcmap··on Tinyalloc: replacement for malloc/free in unmanaged, linear memory situations
Did similar implementation 15 years ago. I needed a implementation that works in SMP environment and it didn't use lock. I use atomic increment to allocate block index, atomic dec to free the block index. It worked very well with good performance in SMP environment. It was implement as share library and the same code can be link statically in the kernel module. Linux Kernel can allocate the block and pass the pointer (index to the block) as parameter to user space and user space and de reference it directly.

The library was implemented using C++. We also ported that to QNX in addition to Linux Kernel.

I remembered it can do > 1 millions msg block per second between user space programs or similar perf for between user and kernel space.

It did waste some amount of space. That can be config at system startup.

srcmap··on What Is Going to Happen in 2019
Agree with your comments.

Adding few other points:

* China's new infrastructures are good and modern. (+)

* Education system is reasonable - produce large number of engineers, college educated young people. (+)

* Entrepreneurial spirits/activities are very high in a lot of cities. (+)

* The new roads system are mostly build/own with private money and adding non-trivial cost to the normal business when they need to transport goods. As compare to the highway system in the US. (-)

* The society is NOT govern by the rule of law. It is govern by the will of the Party and who ever is in power. As shown recently by the some famous actors, actress go fine massive amount because of tax issues. The new rules show up one day can cause the majority movie industry disappear in a few weeks. (-)

* The housing bubble is a big issue similar to what happen to Japan 20+ years ago. (-)

* The debt in private industries and local government are BIG issue. (-)

* The central government has recently created new much stricter rules about people (local/business ) taking the money out of China. It looks good on the surface for majority of population when present as rich people's issue. But imagine a bank allow for deposit but only allow for redraw of $100 per day. With that kind of policy, no business would trust a country enough to do new or continue investments.

  * The old reformer (DengXiaoPeng)'s believe: It doesn't matter if it is a black cat or a white cat, if it can catch a mouse, it is a good cat.

  * The new believe: Those black/write cats who turn into fat cats have served their purposes. It is harvest time.....

  * Overall, it don't look good for China in near/long term.

Very cool demo video.

Wonder if phone camera + AI software can do equivalent demo today?

I worked with foxconn on one of those type of test jig for a tablet type of product before. They are custom make for the PCB, but very nice to have. You can reprogram the PCB in about 1 minute, the PCB is is perfectly align to the Jig and the test pins line up with the JTAG and you can program EEPROM, or EMMC it from the JTAG software.
srcmap··on Microsoft Word for Windows 1.0 Postmortem (1989) [pdf]
Consider windows 3.0 was released on 1989 and according to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_3.0

Windows 3.0 HW requirements was 8088 with 386K-2MB of memory.

The word 1.0 can be run on that OS with such limited resource, that was a very impressive achievements. I assume non-trivial amount of time was probably involve on design/debugging all the GUI features around such limit amount of memory.

Today's it would be very hard to find anything non-trivial that can be run with 2MB of memory - not to mention working word processor with OS/GUI.

srcmap··on Ask HN: How do you store photos and videos?
Any limited to amount of photos/videos you can put into the account with this method?

Right now, it is on a 4TB HDD with backup. Looks for good sharing solutions.

srcmap··on Stop Learning Frameworks
There are good and bad frameworks.

I have very bad experience with the GWT mentioned in the original article. When I tried GWT when it was originally released, it only worked for demo code/pages.

Anything more complex required me to understand Java, Javascripts and the code/system/process they use to convert the Java code to the "generated JS" code. It was O(n^3) complexity for my limited brain.

Maybe it has been changed, I see there was still a release in 2017.

The Python as a language/framework is extremely good in my opinions - very easy to learn, debug, create complex system and dig very deep as needed.

srcmap··on Nvidia's $1,100 AI brain for robots goes on sale
Not sure if 10 watts CPU can work in any handheld gaming device:

A typical 3000 mAH cell phone battery would last only 18 minutes of time just for 10 watts CPU alone, adding Display, wifi, DDR, etc would be less.

For automobile connected or wall powered devices (robot), 10 watts for CPU/GPU power is fine.

srcmap··on Fragmentation Is Why Desktop Linux Failed [video]
I dream of seeing a web interface all existing Ubuntu apps.

* a google docs Web GUI clone for replace OpenOffice. * all files store locally by default. * Goes to cloud only when users need to share.

* Web base apt, dpkg system. * Web base app for view/manage all system logs, dmesg. * Web base interface for gdb * Web base python interface. * etc, etc,

* Desktop is just Firefox with home page with a lot app icons.

That seem to be non trivial amount of weight.

I am curious how that compare to weight of typical fuel + engine for a small plane.

srcmap··on Microsoft is Dead (2007)
I find windows firewall is very good at blocking programs/processes from accessing the network.

By configure it to block svchost.exe from access network except 192.168.0.0/16, the windows 10 system service can have very light load on my laptop.

Combine with ProcessExplorer to monitor various processes's network traffic, I can make my laptop where the only two programs can access the internet are Firefox and Chrome.

Once every 6-9 months, when I feel like it, I do release the svchost.exe from the jail for a day to free win10 to get the latest security update.

With this setup, I can make the Win10 home edition laptop to have system uptime of 6 months or more.

srcmap··on Chip wars: China, America and silicon supremacy
Slightly different Point of view: HW needs infrastructure.

It needs Packages, materials, PCB houses etc ideally all near by, with good transportation networks, etc. That was what ShenZhen was good at. It took very low cost labors and supported government and a lot time to build up.

Take a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leFuF-zoVzA on how to build IPhone from parts bought in ShenZhen public market to see the supported systems needed for HW. You can imagine how much easier and faster to prototype/build HW (drone, robots, etc) in ShenZhen as compare to anywhere else in the world (for now).

As the labor cost goes up in ShenZhen / China, the significant advantages are gone. That's why China is trying to move up via Tech/IP, etc.

Same development processes happened in Japan, Korea, Taiwan for the past 40-50 years. All of them start with unskilled Textile -> toy assembly -> Electonic PCB assembly -> PCB Design -> Simple Asic / Systems-> Complex ASIC / Complex Systems.

As they move up the food chain, they all "clone / steal / borrow / learn" ip from more developed nations.

It is also repeating the process 150 years ago where UK invented the Train/Rail system and US just scaled/improved to much bigger system.

History just keep repeating.
