squishy47··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
I wouldn't even consider a car that doesn't support carplay. i've not seen an infotainment system in YT car reviews that are not laggy AF (except tesla and rivian obv). CBA with them, looking forward to carplay 2.
squishy47··on Block loses 20% of value as Hindenburg Research alleges fraud
I've not read the article but I have a question: lets say, after an investigation by the Gov, the illegal doings in the article turn out to be false. Do the company shareholders of the accused company have the right to sue, in this case Hindenburg research, for the stock value loss due to the article?
squishy47··on Gigapresses – the die casts reshaping car manufacturing
lots of people talking about repair costs. Mat Armstrong's channel (https://www.youtube.com/@MatArmstrongbmx) is good for this. Pretty interesting to see him repair crashed cars on his drive and the prices of the parts. especially the newer lambo series. (edit - Englishing better)
squishy47··on Are we racing toward AI catastrophe?
I've been thinking for a few years that books are going to (re-?)become a more viable way of obtaining infomation as the internet becomes the "dark forest" (https://maggieappleton.com/ai-dark-forest) and the effort of filtering the trash outweighs the cost and time of books. Maybe we might engineer and innovate our way back to a time before instentanious knowledge, who knows.

squishy47··on Ask HN: How to deal with the constant urge to do or create something
you and me both. there's nothing wrong with doing, you just have to do different things. put the screens down and go outside as Mother used to say. i found feeling physically exhausted rather than mentally is pretty refreshing. do jobs around the house, buy some wood and build something in the garden or whatever. just reduce on the computer related pass times and don't do any uni work, that's a sure fire way to get burnt out which isn't great considering you've barely entered working life.
squishy47··on Going full time on my SaaS after 13 years
now that's how community engagement is done. bloody good marketing.
squishy47··on Ask HN: What do I do about LastPass and how do I switch?
moved from lastpass to Bitwarden few years ago, and it's great. ios app can be bit buggy at times but never stopped me from getting a password. also 10 monies a year for premium is ridiculously cheap and well worth it. also nice that it's opensource.
squishy47··on ThreeUK blocks access to encrypted provider Tutanota due to 'age restriction'
GiffGaff have been great. I've used them for years with basically 0 faults. not encounter any stupid policies or reasons to need to contact support everything is just so easy. signal could be a bit better in small british towns (the city is fine, 5g is fast when it works) but not so bad that i'd ever consider switching away + they increased my data allowance twice without increasing the price. did a brief stint with vodafone, as i got staff discount. it was shit. not because of the actual phone service but because it's so difficult to do anything admin related with them and if you think you'll just go into a store to do admin think again. the stores can't do anything other that sell you stuff. STAY AWAY
squishy47··on Mercedes Makes Better Performance a $1,200 Subscription in Its EVs
it's amazing how far detached from the customers these 'legacy' car companies are. Bring on the car hacking!!!

with ev's it seems the less premium brands like hyundai + others have seen their opening and are taking it and it's working the ev6 seems to be really well liked online.

squishy47··on Twitter in chaos as employees accept Musk’s invitation to quit their jobs
start a charity. donate 5% to it. charities only have to give 20% to do good. (at least in UK) you end up with 1.2m easy 200k. then buy everything through the charity, reclaim the 20% on purchases.

please post improvements if there's easier ways... ;)

squishy47··on Sony to begin plastic packaging phase-out next year
why not both. diversifying is never a bad thing. mycelium is really well suited for polysterene replacement as it can be grown in molds to perfectly fit the shape. shame there's loads of patents around the methods used to create it...
squishy47··on Qatar intelligence operation against FIFA officials
Manchester United alone is a multi-billion $/£ company.
squishy47··on Ask HN: Do you still run a home server (self-hosting)?
put Unraid on an old pc a few months ago. it runs backups for all the macs. photo storage, pi-hole and a bunch of home automation stuff. the vm/docker support is nice, not much messing around with configs and the ease of setting up an sdd cache drive was great and makes a huuuge difference.
squishy47··on Putin annexes four regions of Ukraine in major escalation of Russia’s war
Agreed, i'd be surprised if they manage to hold on of any of the land they've taken so far. never mind take Odessa.

squishy47··on Why adults still dream about school
This. school isn't teaching you the topic, it's teaching you to pass an exam. I had a physics teacher that fully understood this. All we did was past papers for like 6 months of I don't really remember much physics but I got a good grade in this class and it helped get me into uni so who cares. If schools really cared about passing on knowledge then most things should be project/course-work based with a small write-up explaining what you did etc depending on the subject to make sure you know what you're talking about. though we'd probably see much higher grades overall, but we wouldn't know if this is because it's a better way to judge knowledge or because the teacher just told them what to write.
squishy47··on BT CEO: Back to the office or risk 'disciplinary action'
More companies should let the employees be autonomous and let them figure out their own way of working on a personal/team basis, rather than managing them like they're school children. That being said if i were on £3.5m compensation like the CEO i'd be in registration early with the best pressed uniform in the class... :p

squishy47··on France bans veggie ′steaks,′ ′sausages′ to describe vegetarian products
A lot of the other threads seems to talk about being tricked into buying a vegan product rather than the animal one. To me this seems like regulation is needed in deceptive packaging, not the product naming. Maybe products should have a logo for "contains animal product" as well as the veg/vegan ones? and make it waaaaay bigger, i shouldn't need vision pro max ultra to see those bloody logos!!
squishy47··on Ukraine: Could it join the EU, and how might Russia react?
The article has a very brief section on why, saying "[to make Ukraine independent and not part of the Russian world]"

Can anyone give me a more detailed version of what benefits the Ukraine will get, if (once) they join, and how it will help them win and recover from the war?

squishy47··on Electric vehicle battery capable of 98% charge in less than ten minutes
$20k to install a 22kW charger!!!! i was quoted £1300 (uk) to have one fitted and i thought that was expensive! to reply to another comment about why a 22kW is needed. if you're on a flexi tariff where energy price is super cheap from like 12-4am then having it fully charge in that time is needed to maximise the best price
squishy47··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
few randoms thoughts on this. yeah but if everyones friends don't live close by then everyone is always out visitng far away friends. we're forever stuck in the cycle.

also it's way easier to say no to someone online, (as people are lazy and don't feel like going out right now) vs a friend showing up and being like lets go do this fun thing #insert peer pressure here#.

also clear work life boundaries are super important. i treat work as if i were in the office, once i leave i ain't checking it until i start againt tomorrow. also no slack or email on my personal devices, eww.

squishy47··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
i think i fair ammount of it is that it's difficult to do things spontaniously anymore. when i was little, my parents friends just used to show up and see what was going on, hang out, have a drink, whatever. and i think this kinda builds that friendship, as it's the random shit ppl do together that builds the bond (best example is the Friends tv show) or when you're a teen and there's nothing to do so you just hang out with your friends. (that 70's show)

it seems really difficult to do that anymore because you can stay friends with someon on socials but then they live 2hr drive away. also it seems less accepted to just show up at someones house, also lives are really busy, so everything has to be scheduled now, otherwise you'll be interrupting things.

(sorry for the poorly structured brain dump.)

squishy47··on What are some cools topics one can learn about that aren't software dev related
I've always struggled knowing what herbs and spices to add to a dish. do you have any advice on a good way to learn this, other than trial and err (so that the mrs won't get mad at me for ruining dinner)

on a side note: there's a lot of different topics here, the easy ones i can see: - cooking - baking - drinks - cheese and other preservation foods, cured meats, etc... - fermenting: beers, cider, kombucha, sour dough, etc...

squishy47··on What are some cools topics one can learn about that aren't software dev related
agreed. what are some good intro resources/topic areas into the subject?
squishy47··on What are some cools topics one can learn about that aren't software dev related
this is a great answer.

2 thoughts.

you mentioned anecdotally that you [noted a distinct lack of 'skeeters' in the 1st yr]. have you come up with a more rigerous test to validate the results?

also are you using native fish? it's generally not a great idea to introduce foreign animals to an ecosystem??
