squiffsquiff··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
The big one is that almost all of those data sources are subject to a 15 minute delay...

squiffsquiff··on Digital ID comes of age as pubs and bars get go-ahead for biometric scan tech
UK (Quote from article):

Younger drinkers in England and Wales will be able to prove their age with a digital ID starting this week as new laws give pubs, off-licences, nightclubs and restaurants the right to use biometric scanning technology to check customers are over 18.

Customers will be able to download software that scans their faces into their own phone to generate a QR code proving their age based on a stored proof of age. Other tech under consideration as part of the government push to digitise age verification for alcohol sales include a device which scans the veins in a drinker’s finger to verify their age. That system has not yet been approved for use.

squiffsquiff··on I'm Pulling ColorCopy from the macOS App Store
This is like an 'experiment' where you hold out an apple and drop it. Pretty obvious foregone conclusion. Did you do a control, e.g. release the same app on Homebrew with similar marketing? Release another app and market it? You have not explicitly stated what you were attempting to show- it seems to be your personal sentiment that MAS does your marketing for you without considering other possibilities.
squiffsquiff··on I'm Pulling ColorCopy from the macOS App Store
LOL
squiffsquiff··on I'm Pulling ColorCopy from the macOS App Store
OK so you built a small utility app in a crowded space- see:

https://setapp.com/lifestyle/best-color-picker https://alternativeto.net/software/instant-eyedropper/?platf... etc.

You released on May 18th only in the Mac app store with no other marketing and decided to withdraw on August 7th, i.e. less than 3 months later. What were you honestly expecting to happen? Did you really think that there was some pent-up unmet demand for your app? What compelling advantage(s) did it offer? Who did you think would be looking for it and how did you think they might evaluate options?

You can also use homebrew on Linux - obviously not for casks
squiffsquiff··on Spanish court declines to fine NordVPN over LaLiga piracy blocking order
I am not defending the current situation but I am not aware of any case where anyone in the UK has gone to jail for piracy. Invariably what actually happens in such cases is:

1. See headline 'movie pirate goes to prison' which implies a link between the activity and the event 2. Actually read article based on industry press release and learn that the defendant was actually convicted for counterfeiting because they were running a business selling set-top boxes with preinstalled unauthorised streaming software or running their own third party unauthorised streaming service with paid subscriptions or something.

By this logic you should factor that android was an acquisition, as were YouTube, doubleclick, deepmind and Waze
squiffsquiff··on Microsoft must face $2.8B UK lawsuit over cloud computing licences
LONDON, April 21 (Reuters) - Microsoft must face a mass lawsuit alleging it overcharged thousands of British businesses to use Windows Server software on cloud computing services provided by Amazon, Google and Alibaba, a London tribunal ruled on Tuesday.
squiffsquiff··on Moving from Serverless to Functionless
Can someone translate this from marketing puff into something meaningful? All I'm seeing is

'lambdas should map to micro services'

'please use more managed services'

squiffsquiff··on I sat down with Werner Vogels, the CTO of Amazon
Appears that our author was present whilst either he gave a talk with no questions or a tame interviewer asked Werner soft questions with no follow-ups. Absolutely no pushback or challenge to anything he's reported as saying. Nothing along the lines of 'I keep reading AWS customers describing the quality of support and support staff declining over the last year or so. This seems to correlate closely with AWS push to full time RTO. How do you respond to this data?'

squiffsquiff··on Mouthguards that flash red with head impacts to be used at Rugby World Cup
Wearing American football style helmets does not reduce the risk of concussion which is primarily the result of sudden acceleration or deceleration causing the brain to move around inside the skull https://ideas.ted.com/football-helmets-dont-protect-against-... This is why they have 'soft' helmets in Rugby. American football likes the macho look of its helmets and body armour but for concussion it's essentially safety theatre.
squiffsquiff··on Amazon says it will reduce its workforce as AI replaces human employees

squiffsquiff··on Disney worker who hacked menus gets 3 years in prison
Scheuer allegedly went into action quickly following his termination, and by early July was said to have used his work credentials, which still functioned after his termination, to access the menu creation system Disney contracted another company to create and change all the fonts in the system to wingdings symbols.

squiffsquiff··on Why Crypto Developer Activity Is Declining
Article appears to blame developers for not attracting VCs to crypto. Right... Because every other industry would blame the developers for not attracting VC's to their industry, right? Right? And of course VC's are where it's at...

squiffsquiff··on Interviewing a software engineer who prepared with AI
I think the better/mature response to this cultural change is to design takehomes anticipating the use of AI and then seeing where the canddiate got lost in the weeds or gets lost when cross questoined about it

There were 30% layoffs at a company I worked at and one of the 'survivors' was so traumatised by it that they took their own life. It's a known phenomenon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor_guilt
squiffsquiff··on The Unicorn Boom Is Over, and Startups Are Getting Desperate
I had a Nokia n95 at the time. It also had superior hardware and a fully functional web browser. Yes the iPhone was attractive at the time but not initially a smartphone and certainly not the first
squiffsquiff··on The Unicorn Boom Is Over, and Startups Are Getting Desperate
Apple did NOT create the smartphone. When the iPhone released in 2007 it was a feature phone- no app store and famously missing featured like copy and paste. Besides Palm who you have mentioned there was Symbian and Windows Mobile which each had third party after market apps available.
squiffsquiff··on Superheavy element half-life measurements push back the limits of stability

squiffsquiff··on Superheavy element half-life measurements push back the limits of stability
My take away from this article is that the super heavy element Rutherfordium can barely be agreed to even exist outside of a theoretical sense.
squiffsquiff··on The FizzBuzz that did not get me the job
To me, the rules given to you are pure gatekeeping. The fact that even after they had given successively more restrictive rules for what should be a trivial program they then verbally restricted you further confirms this. I would question whether this was actually an interview for a real job or not but in any case it's not you it's them.
