sq1020··on First female winner for Fields maths medal
Great to see that someone who grew up in a country which many in the west believe is backward and opposed to women's education and scientific progress in general win such an award.
sq1020··on “Learning to Read” excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X
You seem to have misunderstood my claim. I was comparing the creed of orthodox Islam to that of the NOI. The NOI's official doctrine is clearly racist but you cannot point to a single tenet of orthodox of Islam which would indicate that Islam espouses racism.
sq1020··on “Learning to Read” excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X
For those who feel uncomfortable with Malcolm's former creed that white people are devils and the black race is superior to all others, please do take note of the fact that he did convert to mainstream Islam near the end of his life thus disavowing any such racism or black supremacy.

As Malcolm so eloquently stated:

"America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white - but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color."

You see, orthodox Islam, from the very beginning, espoused equality for all races. In fact, race in Islam is an inconsequential matter. Take for example, one of the greatest and most respected companions of the Prophet Muhammad was an African: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilal_Ibn_Rabah

The fact is that the Nation of Islam could not be any further from orthodox Islam. In fact, an orthodox Muslim could never possibly even consider one who believes in the NOI's teachings to be a Muslim. It's a shame that the NOI usurped the name Islam and applied it to its organization which really has absolutely nothing to do with a religion with such an illustrious history and tradition.

sq1020··on Ask HN: Did you get "never have to work again rich" through software?
I really truly feel sorry for this guy.
sq1020··on Suburbs Try to Prevent an Exodus as Young Adults Move to Cities and Stay
In the suburbs, there's no sense of community or character, nothing unique that distinguishes one suburb from another. It's truly a shame that the vast majority of the American population have been and will be deprived of a childhood that includes a chance to walk to school, take the train to a museum, and play with other kids in the neighborhood.

Suburbs also play a central role in making car ownership absolutely necessary in order to perform even the most basic daily tasks. This, if you think about, amounts to discrimination against the elderly, children, and anyone who is not able to drive or afford a car.

sq1020··on Affordable, automatic sit-to-stand desk
At $399, that's still pretty expensive for a desk.
sq1020··on What Dreams May Come
Everyone's death is impending. Life is by it's very nature limited. It baffles me as to how some very intelligent people seem to believe that we can "beat" death, that death can be cured! What a curious notion advocated by none other than the director of engineering at Google!

Someone once asked a sage, "Why do we fear death and cling to life so much?" The sage said, "We fear death because we have prepared nothing for it while we have constructed for ourselves a comfortable, familiar life. Why would you look forward to going to something for which you haven't prepared anything and why would you look forward to leaving something for which you invested all of your time and effort?"

sq1020··on This Google ad has moved people to tears across India and Pakistan
Like many of you said, it's true that Urdu and Hindi are pretty much the same when it comes to the colloquial, spoken form of the languages. However, when you experience more advanced usages of the languages, they begin to sound totally different. Watch a news broadcast in Hindi and Urdu and you'll see what I mean. The formerly seemingly identical languages diverge sharply in academic settings and literature because Urdu borrows it's more advanced words from Persian which in turn borrowed these words from Arabic whereas the more advanced Hindi vocabulary is based on Sanskrit.

Not to mention the script is totally different.

sq1020··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
As others have said, horribly misleading title. It has nothing to do with Ramadan! How about don't fly when you have some weird chemical on you that sets off airport security.
sq1020··on Gitmo Is Killing Me
Listen, people in office have a much greater responsibility than you or me to make the right choices because their decisions affect all of us and that's also why it's incumbent upon us to make these crooks accountable for their actions and to criticize them because, in the words of Howard Zinn "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."

It's a shame that the president of our country is out throwing lavish birthday parties for himself inviting useless celebrities and paying a guy $100,000 to play the music. Are you freakin kidding me???? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/05/obamas-birthday-bas...

sq1020··on Gitmo Is Killing Me
Another example of the hypocrisy of our goverment which claims to champion ideals like freedom and equality before the law.

As long as there are innocent people like this suffering grave injustices in gitmo, as long as drones are killing innocent Pakistani villagers, as long as the U.S. brazenly continues to financially and militarily support Israel, the president and every member of congress have blood on their hands.

Let me tell you something, these clowns in office couldn't care less about your or me or the homeless guy on the street. They care about being famous, having money and power and going on free vacations paid for by John Q. average tax payer!
