spzb··on Gpt4free repo given takedown notice by OpenAI
My bank's website is publicly available. That doesn't mean anyone is free to access my bank account. Just 'cause something is accessible on the internet doesn't mean you have the right to access it. Case law and statute goes back at least to the 1980s on this point.
spzb··on Gpt4free repo given takedown notice by OpenAI
I'm not a lawyer or even an American but that certainly isn't how the DMCA works. The takedown is issued against the hosting company and, if they comply, they have no further liability. If they don't comply, they are liable in court so, of course, they all comply.
spzb··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
> It turns into an exercise where the Notion document becomes the goal, rather than a tool to help get work done.

Same, except it's Jira and Confluence. Everything has to have story points assigned to it just so we can say we did an arbitrary number of points per sprint and show a impressive looking graph in retrospectives.

spzb··on Amazon investigates after high-value orders were switched for cheaper products
No, but if you have the facility to apply new shrink wrap so it looks factory sealed, Amazon aren’t going to x-ray it to check what’s inside.
spzb··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
Recognising that domestic flights also need security and not treating them like flying Greyhound buses probably helped.
spzb··on What is the minimal possible UK address?
I wonder if a letter addressed to “Liz Truss” would have got there in time for her to still be in residence.
spzb··on Signal would 'walk' from UK if Online Safety Bill undermined encryption
Government policy on encryption (along with many other things including Brexit) relies on "magical thinking". They don't understand the problem so they assume there's an easy solution that's just being withheld from them by nefarious third parties.
spzb··on Signal would 'walk' from UK if Online Safety Bill undermined encryption
As a Brit, I'd say not having guns freely available is one of the fights we won.
spzb··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
People still keep money in their Paypal account? After all these years?
spzb··on New online superstore surpasses Amazon and Walmart to become most downloaded app
“New online store’s marketing copy beats Amazon and Walmart’s to be uncritically regurgitated as news on CNN’s website”
spzb··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
I had this idea myself but never bothered to make anything of it. Thanks for saving me the effort!

spzb··on NeevaAI
Google answers "who is the queen of England?" with the reponse "Charles III". Close, no cigar.

spzb··on UK ditches ban on 'legal but harmful' online content
"Step right up, folks! Spin the Brexit wheel of bullsh*t! Is it a bonus? Is it a disaster? Nobody knows where the wheel will stop this time!"
spzb··on UK ditches ban on 'legal but harmful' online content
The whole bill is a clusterF**. Some potentially useful bits of regulation of Big Tech thrown together with some dangerously authoritarian attempts at criminalising encryption. Bits of the bill keep getting taken out, put back in and then taken out, sent in, sent out before being recycled as firelighters, depending on which way the political wind is blowing on any given day.
spzb··on Raspberry Pi zero 2 now costs $114.99 (used to be 7$ few months ago)
I sold a second hand Pi Zero W (v1.3) with a broken camera connector for over $40 on eBay recently. Broken (as in LEDs come on solid, no HDMI output, or completely dead) Pi 3s are going for similar prices in the $30-60 range. It's all a bit mad.
spzb··on ‘Liz Truss hasn’t understood a word I wrote’, says PM’s favourite author
More frighteningly we might manage to make it three premierships with only two PMs if Boris Johnson's saviour dream comes true.
spzb··on ZX81plus38 – A ULA-less ZX81 clone
ZX81 was the first computer I ever used. I learnt to code on it. It led me down the path that made me gainfully employed all my adult life. It might have been built to a price point but that price point meant it could be afforded by my family and the rest is history.
spzb··on Linode London Connectivity Issue
Again.
spzb··on PayPal phishing scam uses invoices sent via PayPal
I received several of these. Forwarded them to PayPal phishing email address. Never got a response beyond an automated acknowledgment.
spzb··on U.K.'s online censorship bill causes more harm than it attempts to prevent
Yes. The malice is coming from the ones who hide behind the incompetents.
spzb··on U.K.'s online censorship bill causes more harm than it attempts to prevent
Given the caravan of clowns we currently have in government who’d rather debate the meaning of nouns than deal with a cost of living crisis unprecedented since the 1970s, this is not at all surprising.
spzb··on Linode EU-West (London) is out again
Maybe it’s the time the cleaner plugs in the vacuum.
spzb··on ExifLooter – finds geolocation info on all URLs and directories
To be clear, exif data was still present when uploaded (including the orientation data) but the GPS location had been removed. I think problems with photos being incorrectly orientated is more to do with the website not correctly interpreting (or completely ignoring) the relevant exif data.
spzb··on ExifLooter – finds geolocation info on all URLs and directories
It appears not. Safari appears to remove the GPS data when you upload. I tested it myself by uploading a photo to https://exif.tools/ and no GPS location was reported. The same image copied to my laptop and then checked locally with exiftool did have the GPS location.

spzb··on Why don’t European girls like science or technology? (2017)
It's hardly science when you try to wave away questions about stress by pointing to studies about IQ.
spzb··on Why don’t European girls like science or technology? (2017)
And that's exactly the attitude I'm talking about
spzb··on Why don’t European girls like science or technology? (2017)
> females are worse at handling acute stress

Every time this kind of issue comes up on HN there's someone who comes along to mansplain why women are inherently less able to do tech jobs. It's not a good look for our profession and we really should be above this by now.
