spsrich··on How I Almost Destroyed a £50M War Plane and the Normalisation of Deviance (2016)
Anybody reminded of Captain Flashheart while reading this?
spsrich··on The Looming End of Payless ShoeSource
they saved me a bunch of money when I had to buy dance shoes for my daughter. Sorry to see them go.
spsrich··on Starbucks' music is driving employees nuts
Try finding any public space in the USA where there is not blaring background music. Good luck. I always felt the reason Starbucks plays deafening music is to discourage people from lingering. It certainly has the effect on me, and I pity the poor employees.
spsrich··on Indonesia reports reduced deforestation, triggering carbon payment from Norway
Norwegian taxpayer funds sent direct to Indonesian politicians Swiss bank accounts. Marvellous !
spsrich··on Making My Own USB Keyboard from Scratch
love the colour. Took me right back to the Data General days.
spsrich··on Bruno Ganz, actor who played Hitler in Downfall, dies aged 77
He was terrific in that role. RIP.
spsrich··on Earth’s magnetic pole is on the move, fast
The HAB Theory by Allen W Eckert !
spsrich··on Hospitals release lists of retail prices for services
So it's not the first random number they pull out of their ass then ?
spsrich··on AT&T says it’ll stop selling location data amid calls for federal investigation
That's hilarious. What's the difference between AT&T and the federal government ?
spsrich··on Ask HN: What's the largest amount of bad code you have ever seen work?
has to be itunes. What a bloated pile of crap that is.
spsrich··on Cutest robotic kitten that I've ever seen goes viral
never mind that. Just figure out a way to stop a real kitten defecating on your sofa.
spsrich··on The Apple II Source Code for the LOGO Language Found
I love 6502 - so clean and simple. Even after 35 years I still remember the opcodes in hex.
spsrich··on The Dangers of DNA Testing
"It is uncomfortable to read the study’s authors praising labs for their careful work when they get things right, but offering sophomoric excuses for them when they get things wrong."

But not surprising.... they want to continue to work in the field, after all !

spsrich··on Clayton Christensen: Half of U.S. colleges will be bankrupt in 10 to 15 years
Excellent. Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.
spsrich··on Guano Islands Act
"Guano?" "Bird Shit, Sir" --Ripping Yarns: Across the Andes by Frog (1977)
spsrich··on Ask HN: What were/are you doing at age 25? What would you change?
Be in a business area that is expanding, where you are working with and continually learning from top quality people (colleagues and clients)

If you feel like you're treading water, or are in a back room kept far away from clients, move on !

spsrich··on LIDL cancels SAP introduction after spending 500M Euro
My wife worked for a large law firm that decided to standardize on SAP. That's sensible - there are loads of legal practice management suites out there that are designed to cope with the peculiar demands of legal billing - so let's ignore all those and buy a product that doesn't do it, and spend millions adding customization to get what we want.

Of course the project was killed after 3/4 years and millions spent.

A good thing for SAP that in the large firms they target, mediocrity floats upwards!

spsrich··on LIDL cancels SAP introduction after spending 500M Euro
Oh wow, a SAP rollout that went wrong! That never happens !
spsrich··on Mussels test positive for opioids in Seattle's Puget Sound
I wonder if a mussel can get high
spsrich··on Microsoft Turned Consumers Against the Skype Brand
The Skype UWP app is horribly buggy. My wife is forced to use Skype for Business, I swear the first 20 minutes of each call is people getting kicked off, people who can't be heard, etc.
spsrich··on Emergency room patients can face steep bills even when treatment is declined
Any parent has similar stories. Consumer law does not seem to apply to doctors and hospitals.

Imagine if you took your car into the shop - there is no price list, they won't give you an estimate, and for weeks after they send you random bills without indicating what it's for?

This affects everybody in the US, and I don't understand why it's allowed to continue, except the medical industry has bought off all the politicians

spsrich··on [dead]
When your ten year old kid tells you they hate a piece of software that should be all you need to know.

It's atrociously bad.
