sporkologist··on Unifying Theories of Psychedelic Drug Effects
If your mother-in-law is a professional artist, then I'd say this is interesting. If not, then she is just a novice like most people, and is having fun discovering the world of art, from the viewpoint that she discontinued it from childhood, when most kids give up drawing because their brains are frustrated with reconciling their drawings with the world around them which has correct perspective. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
sporkologist··on The World’s Best Violins Sing Like Humans
This article seems presumptuous without taking into account the Stradivarius Double Blind Challenge.

sporkologist··on Mylo: A leather-like material made from mycelium
A lot of the benefit hopefully comes from reducing the carbon footprint that would have gone into a cow.
sporkologist··on Brutalist Design Is the Bad Influence We All Need
It's refreshing seeing a site without a mystery-meat UI.
sporkologist··on A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind (2010) [pdf]
Oh great, one more thing to worry about.
sporkologist··on Brains Cling to Old Habits When Learning New Tricks
This might also explain why learning a 2nd language is usually harder than the 1st, and why getting rid of, or changing, an accent is so hard. All that time invested in those old neural circuits, better make use of those first.
sporkologist··on Voyager 1 Fires Up Thrusters After 37 Years
I'd be inclined to agree with #11, in that domination is always motivated by resources, and aliens visiting earth would likely already have all the resources they need. I'd hope they are motivated by curiosity more than trying to get hydrocarbons or whatever.
sporkologist··on Show HN: RoughJS – Create hand-drawn graphics using JavaScript
Simulated badly-drawn hatching! This is great!
sporkologist··on How not to be a crank: rules for not being a science-dick
Cranks generally don't think they are cranks....
sporkologist··on DNA seen through the eyes of a coder (2017)
Wouldn't the ribosome be the compiler, that translates codes to proteins?
sporkologist··on How to Think Like a Medieval Monk (2017)
> I don't understand why people make such a great deal out of it.

All we know is our existence. Death is the end of existence as we know it. Other than that, no worries I guess.

sporkologist··on Neural Style Transfer for Musical Melodies
Ok then tell me how to generate a drum part 30% of the way from Buddy Rich to Neil Peart.
sporkologist··on Casting a $20M Mirror for the World’s Largest Telescope [video]
> more than 17 kilograms of special glass

That's not very much glass for such a large area, that would make it just a very thin layer... is this correct?

sporkologist··on Spamnesty – A Bot to waste spammers' time
If they didn't try to get the sale, they'd probably get fired and swapped with someone who would.
sporkologist··on Legal Marijuana Isn’t the Boon Small Businesses Thought It Would Be
Weed "should" be mandatory for every citizen, supplied free from the Government.
sporkologist··on Don’t keep cell phones next to your body, California Health Department warns
I was hoping this article published new findings from a medical study, or at least some evidence. Nope. I think their lawyers are just freaking out preemptively just in case anyone finds an effect and a cause.
sporkologist··on The fifth hyperfactorial: 5⁵ × 4⁴ × 3³ × 2² × 1¹ milliseconds is exactly 1 day
You're mixing your siderial vs. solar days.
sporkologist··on Old Calculator Web Museum
I had the Radio Shack version, the EC-4001. http://www.vintagecalculators.com/assets/images/RadioShackEC...
sporkologist··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
That's like comparing a Ford Fiesta to a Formula One car.
sporkologist··on To Save Net Neutrality, We Must Build Our Own Internet
Chattanooga's super-fast publicly owned internet

sporkologist··on Net Neutrality will die, so let’s take the profit out of killing it
> Basically if we "encrypt all the things" then ISPs will only see opaque encrypted traffic and will be unable to effectively implement really fine-grained traffic prioritization/de-prioritization.

Wouldn't the ISP's default in that case be to de-prioritize all opaque encrypted traffic?

sporkologist··on Leonardo Da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3M, Shattering Auction Records
I'd more characterize "culture" as "stuff you have to do to stay within polite society". Whether that's marketing, I'm not sure.
sporkologist··on Leonardo Da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3M, Shattering Auction Records
> Marketing

In this case: Painting for sale; of Jesus; by Leonardo da Vinci.

I don't think you can cram more important Western culture into one object.

sporkologist··on When man meets metal: rise of the transhumans
Be sure to tell your doctor if you get an MRI
sporkologist··on Redesigning the smartphone dial pad
Maybe a resize widget on the current standard keypad would help for bigger screens, rather than having to work with a new layout.
sporkologist··on John Kelly's phone was breached as early as December
If only there were some kind of governmental office of intelligence or something, that could maintain security of our government's communications. Well, I can dream, can't I.
sporkologist··on Brain vs. Deep Learning (2015)
Since we're already at the level of coding genes, we are short-circuiting the normal process of evolution, which was a trial-and-error process. We are living in interesting times.
sporkologist··on New theory why languages don’t all have the same number of terms for colors
It may be that blue is pervasive, at least in blue-skyed cultures, such that any variations in blue are not that important for tasks such as finding ripe fruits or rancid meats. So then, maybe blue was relegated to the background of consciousness as being unremarkable in itself.
sporkologist··on How Logos are Remembered
The ability to draw a memorable thing from memory is entirely dependent on how much of an artist the drawer is. It has nothing to do with the memorability of the logo. We can all recognize the Pepsi or Coca-Cola logos, but only artists who have made mental notes of the shapes will be able to draw a likeness... And that doesn't even mean anything.
sporkologist··on I don’t know who the Web Audio API is designed for
Audio always seems to be neglected and underfunded, compared with video. BeOS seems like one of the ones that did it right.
