sporkologist··on Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
> By definition, they are not motivated to promote a system where only learning 12 is required.

One might assume from this that professional musicians are not interested in the most efficient expression of their musical voice.

sporkologist··on Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
Being a professional musician takes tens of thousands of hours of work. If you don't put in the work, it is obvious to the listener. You have to learn all the theory and technique regardless of instrument or key layout. You can reduce the load when you're a beginner by using a ABCDEF keyboard instead of a QWERTY keyboard, but there is no way around learning the basics.
sporkologist··on Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
If you're not a lazy musician, you'll just learn all your scales. No professional player would take you seriously. Sorry.
sporkologist··on Changes of Mind – The Pattern Seekers: A New Theory of Human Invention
The author is Simon Baron-Cohen, a noted autism researcher, and cousin of actor Sacha Baron-Cohen.
sporkologist··on I got 10k post karma on Reddit with (and without) fast.ai
I appreciate karma points as a measure of how much my thoughts resonate with others, or don't... They are real enough for me.
sporkologist··on I got 10k post karma on Reddit with (and without) fast.ai
Are HN karma points fake too? I hope not
sporkologist··on You weren't meant to have a boss (2008)
Why work for a boss 8 hours a day, when you can work for yourself for 16 hours a day?
sporkologist··on FreeCAD: A free and open source multiplatform 3D parametric modeler
3d is more complex than 2d. Flying a plane is way more complex than driving a car.
sporkologist··on Physics is stuck
> obscenely high power experiments

Like the energy released when 2 black holes collide? We're going to need a bigger capacitor.

sporkologist··on Design Tip: Never Use Black (2012)
It adds to cognitive load, now I have to hunt for the frickin scrollbar... mystery-meat UI if you ask me.
sporkologist··on Design Tip: Never Use Black (2012)
I really don't dig the dark blue text. Historically that's the color of HTML links.... just make it black, everyone's used to it already.
sporkologist··on Coding and drawing
I think of coding as being more commonly associated with playing an instrument, but there may be something here too.
sporkologist··on Young children would rather explore than get rewards
Exploring is its own reward apparently.
sporkologist··on Bertrand Russell's argument for idleness is more relevant than ever
I totally agree. Three days has been the max for me, as far as mental health agendas. Far more productive with 15 - 20 hours work, at the most. My employer Walmart, for some reason, isn't as conscious as many, they're telling me that my cart-collecting days are over.

> Blow off weekends often.

Yes definitely agree, best for health outcomes.

sporkologist··on What if Planet 9 is a Primordial Black Hole?
Acrophobia, anyone?
sporkologist··on Feeling unproductive? Maybe you should stop overthinking
Great, now I can overthink about how I think about overthinking.
sporkologist··on Coin Flip Decides Material’s Fate
> Materials typically contain lots of small imperfections, but it’s the rare, large defects that cause a material to fail.

Ok so.... we need to know more about the rare large defects! Unfortunately that's the last we hear about them in this paper.

sporkologist··on We are not mostly empty space
> Inside your body, you aren’t mostly empty space. You’re mostly a series of electron clouds, all bound together by the quantum rules that govern the entire Universe.

So we are mostly electron clouds... and clouds by definition are mostly empty space.

sporkologist··on Programming languages are not languages (2018)
> While the world is a continuum, we slice into tiny pieces, we discretize it with words.

To me the world is objects. To you maybe it's a continuum.

sporkologist··on Surviving the coronavirus, then testing positive again
Yup gotta keep those numbers down, right?

But seriously, the only way to get ahead of this is to test everyone. Didn't you learn anything in epidemiology?

sporkologist··on Aerosol and surface stability of SARS-CoV-2 compared to SARS-CoV-1 [pdf]
I like to think of it as, the US is one big cruise ship but with coronavirus instead of norovirus.
sporkologist··on Show HN: A stream of AI-generated art
So what is about creation?
sporkologist··on Towards fungal computer (2018)
It's the dawn of mycocomputing!
sporkologist··on Facebook Discovers Fake AI-Generated Profiles
They absolutely got fake news. "Aluminum tubes" anyone?
sporkologist··on The Liar's Walk: Detecting Deception with Gait and Gesture
I'd certainly hate to be convicted of deceptive walking. The punishment is probably something like 5 hours of honest walking per day.
sporkologist··on Contractor admits planting logic bombs in his software
Yes the plumber obviously went to upside-down plumbing school where he learned the profit-maximizing techniques of installing everything upside-down.
sporkologist··on Facebook fail to convince lawmakers it needs to track your location at all times
> clamping down on the spread of false information

It seems this user is at the corner of 47th and 3rd, so we won't tell them how oil companies lied about global warming. Did I get that right?

sporkologist··on Repetition Makes Music Beautiful [video]
2 and 3 are, but that's about where it ends. Yeah you can do subdivisions of 5 and 7 but it starts to be an academic exercise at that point. So, no, prime numbers don't have any special relationship to music, sorry. Factors of 12 and 16 are actually the most common and useful groupings in most music that people can dance to.
sporkologist··on The Web Began Dying in 2014 (2017)
Yes right after Mosaic 1.0 was released. RIP
sporkologist··on It’s impossible to see the world as it is, argues a neuroscientist [video]
My use of 'optimal' is more of 'sufficient to keep reproducing given current conditions' than anything.

If you're suggesting that evolution isn't the right vehicle for this process, then we'll have to disagree.
