sporadicism··on Make Tmux the OS
It definitely was.

> It was also far more secure, but it was still not nearly secure enough.

That's one way to say "plagued by a decade of botnets."

Now google XP blue screen of death. Still alive and well then.

If the bar is Microsoft's most loathed release, then I guess you could call it stable and secure.

sporadicism··on Make Tmux the OS
XP was godawful for years security- and stability-wise until the release of SP2.
sporadicism··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
So it's not that they can't, it's that they won't. Seems crazy to me.

>What would you do to make it more effective?

I'd ask companies who have managed to get the process down to 2-3 weeks what they're doing, and then do that. It sounds like you're saying they don't actually care to, though.

sporadicism··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
The person I responded to said that filling a role in 90 days would be "relatively quick" so you've already improved theoretical hiring efficiency by up to 50%.

But it still doesn't sound like a very effective process typed out like this.

What an absolutely insane way to do business. Everybody is out here trying to squeeze every last drop of efficiency out of software teams to the point of shipping garbage. Meanwhile managers, executives, and hr are operating under the belief that taking literal months to move "candidates through the pipeline" is eminently reasonable.

> I can tell, usually within a few minutes of meeting them, who’s really into social media.

Same for me, except it's people who don't read books.

sporadicism··on When Genius Fails: The Intellectual Arrogance of the AI Labs
You're right. I'll rephrase: Even if engineers were uniquely capable in this regard it still wouldn't equip them to identify solutions, let alone solve problems, in fields where they lack domain expertise.
sporadicism··on New Worlds: We are living in the future of J.G. Ballard or William Gibson
Asian superpowers feature so heavily in the genre that it's a cliche. Also Ballard was British.

sporadicism··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
Yes, that is the argument from the video I was referencing.
sporadicism··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
I didn't find any of the arguments for optimism compelling, even if I wanted to agree with the talk's message.

Free software is about the worst example, as it has inadvertently built the technology that has, more than any other, concentrated corporate power and debased the profession.

Greenspan felt Greenspan was responsible for 2008.

sporadicism··on The Art of Money Getting
How's that? I am not familiar.
sporadicism··on The Art of Money Getting
I agree with this if what you mean is that employment generally requires conformity, passivity, accepting low autonomy, low creativity, etc. Otherwise, this isn't my experience.

sporadicism··on Books are not too expensive
One of the reasons that books are indeed too expensive is that the mass market paperback is effectively dead. Now consumers much choose from fewer, higher priced options. That is, trade paperbacks and hardcovers.

Hardcovers may be relatively inexpensive by this metric or that but I don't want to pay for them and I don't really want them at all.

Why do you suppose that is? Why is there an insatiable desire for negative news about real estate?

sporadicism··on Software engineers can no longer neglect their soft skills
> Most of my peers would rather work with brilliant jerk than a friendly average person

I worked with one of these. Every interaction was miserable and stomach-turning. He slowed the project down in a number of ways. A friendly average person would have been a net gain.
