spoon16··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2026)
Strobe | Senior Infrastructure & Data Integration Engineer | Brooklyn, NYC | ONSITE | Full-time

Strobe is building the world's largest power plant — not a single site, but a distributed fleet of buildings, batteries, EVs, and generators buying and selling power in real time across wholesale energy markets.

We need a senior engineer to own our data integration and cloud infrastructure layer — the connective tissue between utilities, grid operators, OEM hardware, weather services, and our optimization engine.

What you'd own:

– Wholesale market integrations (NYISO, CAISO, ERCOT) — real-time pricing, capacity markets, demand response signals

– OEM hardware integrations — API and data bridges to building equipment manufacturers for monitoring, control, and telemetry

– Green Button Connect pipelines — ingesting interval consumption, billing, and meter data from utilities (ConEd, PG&E, SCE, etc.) via OAuth2 + ESPI

– Weather and solar forecast data pipelines

– Utility bill reproduction engine — modeling site economics before and after Strobe to forecast financial impact across dozens of rate structures. This simulation infrastructure is core to how we sell and deliver value.

– Event-driven AWS infrastructure (Lambda, API Gateway, AppSync/GraphQL, EventBridge, IoT Core, TimeStream, Amplify, CloudWatch)

– Terraform IaC — real module design, remote state, multi-workspace patterns

– Observability and alerting on systems where downtime means missed market events and real dollars

Strong fit if you have:

– Deep AWS experience (IAM, Lambda, API Gateway, AppSync, EventBridge, TimeStream or similar TSDB)

– Production Terraform (modules, remote state, multi-workspace patterns)

– Extensive Python (pydantic for models, click for CLIs, boto3 for AWS, async pipelines)

– Experience integrating messy third-party APIs at scale (utilities, government, energy, OEMs)

– Comfort with on-call for systems that control physical hardware and move real money

Stack: Python / TypeScript / Rust / Terraform / AWS / GraphQL (AppSync) / MQTT / Grafana — AI-agent-optimized monorepo with deep investment in agent-enabled engineering efficiency.

Small team, high ownership, no layers. 5 days/week onsite at Newlab, Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Strobe | Software Engineer | Brooklyn, NYC | ONSITE | Full-time | $120k–$250k + equity

We’re building a distributed, software-defined power plant: buildings, batteries, EVs, and on-site generation buying and selling power in real time. Think cloud control plane + embedded hardware + energy markets.

Small, high-performing team. No layers. You’ll own systems end-to-end: design → deploy → on-call.

We’re looking for *fungible generalists*, not narrow specialists. Strong fit if you’re comfortable with: - AWS-heavy backend work (Lambda, APIs, GraphQL, data pipelines) - Operating real-time production systems - Python / TypeScript (Rust a plus)

Depending on fit, you might work on: - Telemetry & control over unreliable networks - Embedded Linux / RTUs (Modbus, BACnet, DNP3) - Market-facing systems and optimization - Operator UIs with real-time streams (React)

Requirements: - Strong production experience - Systems mindset, bias to shipping - Willing to be onsite 5 days/week at Newlab (Brooklyn Navy Yard) - Not remote

Fast pace, direct feedback, real ownership. This is not a 9–5.

Email: eric@strobepower.com, cc keeley@strobepower.com (please mention HN)

Include your LinkedIn or resume as PDF.

I'm currently taking some time off to be with family and am starting to explore what I am going to do next. I'm open to starting something new in Q1 of CY'25.

I'm a passionate software engineer, very effective directly supporting enterprise customers, and have successfully built and lead engineering teams from first hire to over 200 full-time engineers.

Would love to talk if you think you have established product market fit and are looking to scale.

F9 | 3 Senior Software Engineer | Boston, MA | Full Time or Contract | ONSITE We are teaching the US Air Force how to build software.

We are looking for team mates that have strong engineering backgrounds outside of government and who have an interest in teaching Air Force service members and civilians how to build and operate multi-tenant services in a shoulder to shoulder environment. You will be implementing and operating the services as a senior software engineer.

The platform we are operating today is Pivotal Cloud Foundry so experience with Cloud Foundry or similar is a big bonus, but is not strictly required.

The project we are working on is called Kessel Run, you can Google articles or reach out to me directly (eric@f9teams.com) if you want to learn more.

The only strict requirement is that you be eligible to receive a security clearance at some point in the future. Mostly this means US Citizen with a felony free background.

spoon16··on Staying with the US Digital Service
I agree with you. Most of our work is on projects where something is very wrong.
spoon16··on Staying with the US Digital Service
I live outside of Seattle. But nearly all of the work I do with USDS requires me to be physically present. So I travel a lot (4/5 days a week). You aren't going to find a badly broken technology project in the Federal Government that is able to leverage remote people effectively.
spoon16··on Staying with the US Digital Service
One of the USDS project selection criteria is that we prioritize work that based on what will do the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the greatest need.

I do not believe a Muslim Registry does any good for anyone. Being involved in building one would require formally changing our values which would be visible to everyone in USDS.

Disclaimer: personal opinion, I am currently serving on a USDS team, my term is up in June of '17

spoon16··on Staying with the US Digital Service
It is very common on HN to put a disclaimer like this on posts. I do not think this has anything to do with Matt working for the government.

spoon16··on Ask HN: What is it like working at Netflix?
If you are an under performer and you don't know your management is failing you badly. I had three different managers while I was at Netflix (I switched teams once). 2 were great, 1 underperformed. The underperforming manager was not at Netflix for very long, which I appreciated.
spoon16··on Ask HN: What is it like working at Netflix?
I don't regret leaving. I've had a lot of fun working outside of Netflix. I do still hold Netflix in very high regard though and have a number of good friends still working there. If the conditions were right, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
spoon16··on Ask HN: What is it like working at Netflix?
I worked in two different groups while I was at Netflix. I loved it. The engineers on their team are consistently good and there is low tolerance for under performers. They take their culture seriously and their leadership is very strong. I'd be happy to work for them again in the future.

Re: expectations about excess work. It's your own responsibility to set expectations about what you can get done and how quickly you can get it done. I was reasonably successful at this and took lots of time off the last year I was there, m wife had our first baby. Since I was able to set reasonable expectations I got a great raise that year, despite the time that I took off.

Time Inc / Seattle, New York, Bangalore, London / Full Time, Onsite

Time Inc operates some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Entertainment Weekly, In Style, Southern Living, and many others. We are (finally) building out a world class engineering team to partner with our brands to extend their reach.

We've brought in strong technology leadership from the likes of Amazon, Netflix, and Microsoft.

I've got positions on the following engineering teams; DevOps (SEA, NYC, LON, BLR), Digital Asset Management (SEA, NYC, BLR), Branded Web Properties (NYC, BLR), Editorial Tools (NYC, BLR), Native/Mobile Applications (NYC, SEA).

We are looking for senior engineers and engineering managers with strong engineering fundamentals. We are just getting off the ground, so are looking for people comfortable working in environments with many rough edges.

@radeksimko is one of my team members in the UK and is doing great work on our DevOps effort. He recently became a committer on Terraform[1]. He represents the type of engineer I'm looking for.

Please reach out to me directly if you are interested in learning more. Email in profile.

spoon16··on Open Competitions: Thoughts on the Netflix OSS prize
http://www.slideshare.net/reed2001/culture-1798664

This deck is an accurate representation of the Netflix culture. The company is big so you will have different experiences in different parts of the company, but I felt like leadership was very serious about encouraging the culture described in that deck.

That deck describes the type of culture that I am productive and happy working in.

spoon16··on Open Competitions: Thoughts on the Netflix OSS prize
Source? I worked for Netflix for two years and loved it. I left to explore working for smaller organizations. Most of the best engineers that I worked with are still there. The great engineers I know that have left, left on their own because the recent stock performance has enabled them to explore other opportunities. Netflix has the best engineering culture that I have experienced.

spoon16··on Facebook: Updates to the Graph API
These changes do not break any existing functionality, Field Expansion is an addition to the API. Field Expansion is basically support for very simple joins.

Batch Request support has existed for some time and allowed similar result sets to be retrieved. Batch Requests are significantly more complex to construct and are not well supported by tools like Facebook's Developer Open Graph Explorer.
