spookyuser··on Net Neutrality Day of Action: Help Preserve the Open Internet
I think archive.org has the best Net Neutrality protest. Very _in your face_ and clear
spookyuser··on Ancient Iraqi Artifacts Imported By Hobby Lobby to be Forfeited
Well... I don't know what I expected.
spookyuser··on SoundCloud cuts jobs, closes SF and London offices
I only started using sc once reposts were already out and never had an issue with them, but there's this new trend I've started noticing on SC, where artists add their new songs to a playlist and then repost the playlist every day. If a playlist has 20 songs it can be impossible to listen to anything else on your stream because the whole playlist gets added to the queue. I find it extremely selfish since it just makes it that much harder for other artists on the stream to get their fair share of air time.
spookyuser··on Dissolving the Fermi Paradox [pdf]
After reading The Dark Forest last year I almost hope this is true.
spookyuser··on Elon Musk Publishes Plans for Colonizing Mars
This only has 3.5/5 on goodreads, is it worth it?
spookyuser··on The Decline of Imgur on Reddit and the Rise of Reddit's Native Image Hosting
If/when imgur closes, it would be scary to think of how many old reddit posts might become completely lost.
spookyuser··on Is group chat making you sweat? (2016)
I know this is directed at slack but I've noticed the same thing on whatsapp, where, in my circles - anytime there's a `thing` involving more than two people it will become a whatsapp group chat before some people even kown they're involved in the `thing`. You can easily rack up dozens of whatsapp groups and even though they might not be business oriented they make me sweat socially for most of the reasons listed in the article.

That's just the tip of the iceberg though, since it seems like an almost natural instinct, at this point, to make a whatsapp group chat for everything. School group projects are also added to whatsapp groups and with these everything the author has listed is true. Probably even to a greater extent.

In one project I did a couple years ago our group never met physically for 99% of the tasks, all the meetings we needed to have happened over group chat - bearing all the problems listed in the article. I know for a fact that the resulting work was diminished because of this. Yet, people seem almost enthusiastic about transferring work to whatsapp.

spookyuser··on The Calibre Content Server
Does this mean if you used kindle unlimited you could effectively keep the books forever?
spookyuser··on What's with the black bar?
Exactly, if people don't know what it's for then what's the point of doing it in the first place.
spookyuser··on A day without JavaScript
Even more off topic but I'm surprised this isn't a consumer feature. There are so many sketchy chrome extensions that try and do this.
spookyuser··on Struggling to cover terrorism in the media age
Great article. Although I think it missed out on offering the obvious solution of just not watching 24H news. Large networks themselves are not going to stop making this kind of content until it's no longer profitable.
spookyuser··on Xperia Touch makes any surface interactive
I have no idea how well this works in real life. But if the interactive surface is even close to what the video shows then isn't a big portion of the microsoft future concept video [1] fulfilled?

spookyuser··on Ask HN: How do I switch from being a passive consumer to an active producer?
Since I find these book recommended on HN a lot, I guess it's my turn to share them as well.

The War of Art [1] and Do the Work [2] both are excellent books about making things and why it's hard. I found them motivating not only because of the solutions in the books but also just because someone describing the problems I have with creating, so clearly, is helpful to read. It's nice knowing you're not a crazy person and that these are problems a lot of people go through. They're also very short and easy to read. So give them a shot.

spookyuser··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
It's not TOTP 2FA though right? I couldn't add it to authy if I wanted.
spookyuser··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
Yay, thanks!
spookyuser··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
Really? That's great. I didn't know that. FNB should get on it then. In general FNB seems to have 'poor' security. You can't even paste a password in when resetting or signing up. They seem to just want me to be making week passwords.
spookyuser··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
Random question but it really bugs me that FNB and I think most other South African banks still use SMS/Email based secondary authentication OTPs. Are you guys planning on using TOTP by any chance?
spookyuser··on How to Read a Paper (2016) [pdf]
Obviously a different set of circumstances, but I would be curious to hear what people think about Cal Newport's Question; Evidence; Conclusion - method of reading. From the grade A students guide. I recently switched to it and found myself understanding reading assignments much better. It seems like this method is more geared for Researchers though.
spookyuser··on Startup School 4: Office Hours
Thanks, I had no idea uservoice was that expensive. yours definitely does look better as well!
spookyuser··on Startup School 4: Office Hours
Looks, pretty cool. Kinda reminded me of uservoice [1], how do you think it compares?

spookyuser··on Ask HN: What are some great “Free” services provided by IBM, Amazon, etc.?
How does this compare to writerduet?
spookyuser··on Root partners with Standard Bank South Africa to offer programmable bank account
I also signed up. I'm pretty excited to try it out. Would you be able to use root as a fully fledged bank account? Or is it not really meant for that?
spookyuser··on Introducing Twitter Lite
IMO installing this alongside third party twitter apps will make a great combo for push notifications alone. My preferred app just refreshes all notifications hourly, which is obviously worse than the official app.
spookyuser··on Going native
I love postman. The whole program is extremely well designed, and the dark theme looks fantastic. Might even be better than Darcula on intelliJ :p

Since the author is in the comments just wanted to ask one thing. Is this [1] supposed to be misaligned?

spookyuser··on Most Electronics Being Banned on Certain US-Bound Flights
Nevermind that, I once tried to board a flight in Dubai with a completely empty water bottle. Just before I boarded the plane, security stopped me and rummaged through my bag for a minute or so as though they were looking for something then just threw my empty bottle out, saying it was not allowed. I was thirsty for the whole flight because of that. They did, however, manage to foil my plan of bringing down an A380 with an empty 200ml bottle.
spookyuser··on Weapon physicist declassifies rescued nuclear test films
It was pretty succinct compared to Side By Side [1] which IMO failed to achieve what your comment did, even with a 1h39m running time.

spookyuser··on Weapon physicist declassifies rescued nuclear test films
Fascinating, thank you for highlighting the problems of digital so succinctly.
spookyuser··on Weapon physicist declassifies rescued nuclear test films
That quote makes it so clear how weak film is as an archival method.

Yet I still hear people talking about how digitally shot films have an archival problem. I really can't see how any well thought out digital archive wouldn't be significantly safer than film in a can.

spookyuser··on Facebook is terrifying
Nevermind facebook, that website is terrifying.
spookyuser··on Ask HN: What are your profitable side projects?
Definitely going to use freeyourmusic the next time I need to switch. The last time I was in this situation I found a sketchy python script that transferred only bits of my library.
