spookyuser··on China Blocks WhatsApp
It's like a really ugly combination of that episode and the waldo episode
spookyuser··on Why are today's teens putting off driving, dating and drinking?
AKA Juvenoia https://youtu.be/LD0x7ho_IYc
spookyuser··on Wind energy used to mine cryptocurrency to fund climate research
It's the most _2017_ article I've ever read.
spookyuser··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
I completely agree with this. I'm surprised reddit hasn't monetised the actual comment threads themselves and become a better disqus.
spookyuser··on The Zen of Just Writing CSS
Tachyons is so good that I would find it difficult to go back to plain css. I usually cringe looking at non Tachyons stylesheets. I'm not even totally sure how I worked before it.
spookyuser··on Cassini's Last Photos Will Be Spectacular
The production value alone was incredible. I was expecting to see a Directed by Christopher Nolan at the end.
spookyuser··on YouTube-mp3 agrees to shut down
Yeah it's more like *-dl. It's hard to find sites it doesn't work with.
spookyuser··on Bitcoin Tumbles as PBOC Declares Initial Coin Offerings Illegal
When it goes from 5k to 10k there will then be the inevitable slew of headlines: _Is it time to start paying attention to the bitcoin???_
spookyuser··on Ask HN: What books have made the biggest impact on your mental models?
Very interesting, thank you.
spookyuser··on Ask HN: What books have made the biggest impact on your mental models?
What is a Mental Model? I've heard this word tossed around so much recently and I still don't feel like I understand what it means.
spookyuser··on The significance of plot without conflict (2012)
That sounds amazing, I'll check it out!
spookyuser··on Inside continues to bet on email, the “largest social network”
I don't know how inbox does it, but I like how some newsletters are rendered on it, the product hunt newsletter shows up as just the top three/four posts of the day.
spookyuser··on The significance of plot without conflict (2012)
Yup, I love those too. They probably have even less conflict than Slacker :P
spookyuser··on The significance of plot without conflict (2012)
Thank you for pointing this out, I hadn't heard about before and now I really want to see it!
spookyuser··on The significance of plot without conflict (2012)
I love the kinds of stories where nothing happens, I don't even know what they're technically called but I mentally refer to them as people walking around and doing stuff movies. I dont know why they're so appealing to me - maybe for the same reason that people find slow tv good. But I would be totally happy to go and watch Slacker for the sixth time right now.
spookyuser··on Catastrophic flooding in Houston
> Get ready, because the next few decades are gonna look like this.

And this https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/90179790604643942...

spookyuser··on X-Seed 4000
It's not canon, but in Ted Chiang's short story about the tower of Babel. The tower was perpetually in construction, so a whole society eventually flourished in the tower.

Some people never even left the tower because it took too long to get down from the place they were born.

spookyuser··on Spacex Launch Webcast: Formosat-5 Mission
The live feed is usually a little clunky when it's landing on the boat. The one from last week was crystal clear https://youtu.be/vLxWsYx8dbo?t=19m42s
spookyuser··on Build-a-Coin Cryptocurrency Creator
This is amazing. In terms of the ICOs that people on HN talk about. Is that a company creating a coin and then selling the first coin offering to create capital?
spookyuser··on Android Oreo
Not only that but would non Android developers even understand the feature?
spookyuser··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
Exactly.

A consequence of this being true is the Raven Paradox [1], seemingly the OP has solved the classic riddle in a HN thread.

spookyuser··on Show HN: One hostname to rule them all
I don't really have anything to add beside that the fly.io website is beautiful.
spookyuser··on TRAPPIST-1 Is Older Than Our Solar System
True. It's not based on any hard evidence but IMO the author made a persuasive argument for it.
spookyuser··on TRAPPIST-1 Is Older Than Our Solar System
I also recently finished The Three Body Problem, we could get there in 500 years with the minor caveat that we are not killed in a dark forest strike sometime before then.
spookyuser··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
Thank You! This is amazing and I love it.
spookyuser··on The Most Common Error in Media Coverage of the Google Memo
So true, I thought the last paragraph of the article was particularly apt.

>When journalistic institutions widely publicize material of this sort, only to abdicate the vital work of rigorously addressing its substance, they make its least plausible claims more likely to be normalized. They leave the project of assessing its merits and flaws to Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and other venues where the loudest voices tend to prevail, instead of offering their own careful reporting and expert analysis.

I buy this point so much because after reading about the controversy on the crazy 1000 comment thread here on HN and the other threads on reddit, there was no top level comment that made the same well reasoned claims this very article did, which IMO is so far the best I have read about the whole debacle. This is what journalists doing their job looks like.

spookyuser··on ThyssenKrupp Multi – world’s first rope-free elevator [video]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJBD1wf-YQ Here is Tom Scott's video about the continuous loop elevator's.
spookyuser··on Google to add 'news feed' to website and app
Please tell me how? Is there a way to disable them without disabling google now?
spookyuser··on Google to add 'news feed' to website and app
Dear God. I can barely handle the news snippets that have started appearing in Google Now, I'm actually really close to disabling the entire thing because of them. I guess this means they're not going away anytime soon.
spookyuser··on Archiveteam are backing up SoundCloud
I guess soundcloud is technically using Google Cloud now...
