spookyuser··on Udemy raises $50M at a $2B valuation from Japanese publisher Benesse
I have the same experience, in fact for the most part I feel like everything I've tried on Udemy has been the same level of quality as a YouTube tutorial.
spookyuser··on Google Maps Hacks
Yes! Or maybe a radius around around your house where navigation stops, just like how you can set an area of maps which is downloaded.

I guess, though, I would probably only want navigation to stop if I'm going to my house, not from it.

spookyuser··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
I never see the app I am currently using for my password manager on HN password manager threads so I will recommend it now.

I have been using Safeincloud https://www.safe-in-cloud.com/en/ for I feel like forever. The dev is quick to add new features, like autofill on android, and windows hello on windows.

It's a one time payment on android and IOS, Desktop apps are free.

I know that 1password is prob better and more secure, but I can't afford the monthly rate.

spookyuser··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
Yeah it's amazing how incredible Calibre is at organising books but terrible it is at displaying them.

As a matter of fact though, I think I have found a very good epub reader which I don't see mentioned very much called Cover.

It is ridiculously smooth at displaying epubs, maybe even more so than edge. I was reading an epub with tons of images and I could swipe left and right between pages multiple times without waiting a second for reflow, almost felt like swiping a pdf. Whereas on all those other apps the book was blurred and did not scale how I would expect it to, to fill the screen. On cover everything is displayed how I think it should be displayed without changing anything. So yeah, cover A+

spookyuser··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
I am so sad about the fact that Edge can no longer read epubs and seems to have (so far) sub par pdf reading. It's been my go to pdf reader for a while now and I love the way it scrolls. It is so smooth - just like preview on a mac. I haven't found anything else that comes close to edge for the smoothness of its pdf reading on windows, so I will definitely be holding out on this update for as long as I can. I don't really need two chromium based browsers on my PC anyway.
spookyuser··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
Wow, if your Eon is installed and everything, how is it? Would love to buy a full eon and everything but I don't have a compatible car yet, will definitely make sure that my next car is 100% comma compatible though.

Thanks, will check out that episode!

spookyuser··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
Agreed, Lex Fridmin was a standout podcast for me this year. I didn't have any idea who he was before the podcast but he has been getting some insanely famous guests on his show in what seems like the very year it was becoming popular.

My favourite episode of the podcast was his interview with Geohot I think because I just like hearing Geohot speak and when he's speaking to someone that's not asking easy questions you end up with George giving some very interesting answers to questions about AGI and self driving.

This was amazing! I did not know Tom Sachs had a youtube channel, or that he still collaborated with Van Neistat. Now I'm making my way through his channel and all the videos I have watched so far have been incredible.

spookyuser··on China's super camera can pinpoint specific targets among of thousands of people
Sorry my anti-procrast was on so I couldn't reply sooner!

> say someone is Chinese and wants to post on HN and has a pro-government view of his own country, which is quite common, you're saying they don't even need to bother posting?

I don't think I am saying that and I don't think that what I described implies that.

If pro CCP comments are flagged, downvoted and responded to, that doesn't mean pro CCP commenters don't have the ability to or _shouldn't_ post a defence of their own country. In fact for people to downvote, flag or respond to pro CCP comments requires that they bother posting a defence of the CCP harvesting organs [1], beating up HK protestors [2][3][4][5], ethnically cleansing the Uyghur [6], or implementing a social credit system [7] - in the first place.

I suppose this comes down to how we define tolerance and disagreement. I think that downvotes, flags and responses are signs of disagreement rather than intolerance. While upvotes are signs of agreement.

Should a pro CCP commenter feel bothered to post a defence of their own country? If what makes them feel bothered to post is when people are likely to agree with their defence, then no. However, if what makes them feel bothered is just their belief that anti CCP comments are wrong about something, then of course they should still feel bothered to post their defence because nothing about flags, responses or downvotes stops one from holding a belief. But their posting of that belief doesn't mean we have to agree with it [8].

Though, maybe in this case the mass downvoting of a single opinion is a genuine intolerance of opinion.

If so, then where the tolerance of opinion ends is far too late.

spookyuser··on China's super camera can pinpoint specific targets among of thousands of people
Last time I saw this on HN it actually wasn't too bad there were some people trying to defend the CCP in a thread about Hong Kong and almost every pro CCP comment was flagged and had a response.

But in the real world it is super frustrating, was having a conversation with someone the other day that was trying to to make that exact kind of whataboutism with Apple and Huawei. They just did not see it as categorically different, no matter what you believe apple can and has done, that Huawei is essentially owned by the CCP [1]

Others have already said that the street view integration is amazing but I just want to say that I think it's actually better than most of the live sattelite augmented reality apps I've used, which just never seem to work for me and even after looking at them for ten minutes I still can't tell what's going on. It's really awesome

spookyuser··on Police Shut Down a 3k-Person Game of Hide-and-Seek at IKEA
Take a look at Channel101.com, it seems like this show originally was screened there. The idea is people submit 5 minute tv pilots and only continue making them if the live channel101 audience votes to renew them for another episode.

Almost everything on channel101, even now, still feels like quality sketch comedy. Some of the best stuff though is Dan Harmon's original shows - though there are almost too many to watch http://www.channel101.com/talent/108

spookyuser··on PySceneDetect – A tool for detecting scenes in movies
Am I stupid, or is it really hard to get from a readthedocs page to the github repo it is generated from.

It seems like the only way to do it is click edit, get an error message and then hit backspace in the url to get to the root of the repository.

spookyuser··on Google and Mozilla are failing to support browser extension developers
One of the things I found most lacking from the official chrome and FF documentation, is how to use NPM with your extension for dependencies and how to automatically build and release to both the FF store and chrome store.

There are a couple of issues that come up if you just plonk a package.json in your root folder, for example - now you the same information like extension name and version number duplicated across two files, the npm package.json and the webextension's manifest.json. Nevermind the fact that it's not obvious at all how to distribute the npm dependencies with the extension once you have them installed on your computer

On all of these issues, the best "tutorial" I've found is just looking at the structure of sindresorhus's "refined GitHub" repo. He and the contributors have totally nailed how to integrate npm, automate the build and manage the package.json files plus much much more, in a very readable way. I would definitely consider mirroring the rough structure of refined GitHub just for sanity reasons. Everything about it makes sense.

Here's a link to the refined GitHub repo --https://github.com/sindresorhus/refined-github

And if it helps here's a link to the extension I built using refined GitHub as a model -- https://github.com/spookyUnknownUser/laconic_hover I tried to implement the most minimally important features of the build and packaging system of refined GitHub in my project.

spookyuser··on SIM swap horror story: I've lost decades of data and Google won't help
A good mitigation including getting a password manager might be to add a sync passphrase to chrome right?

spookyuser··on SIM swap horror story: I've lost decades of data and Google won't help
> 4) You can retake possession of your hacked Gmail account by providing one of the previously used passwords. No need to have a working phone.

This is what I'm worried about, if I don't have a phone number on a gmail account, won't it make it harder to get access to that gmail account if I am locked out. Even though there's obviously a bad security loophole with just having a phone number on your account as a recovery option, is it not worse to be locked out of your account with no way to get in?

spookyuser··on Show HN: Browser Extension to Refine the HN Experience
Very cool!

I noticed that the extension is inspired by Sindresorhus. I think he's totally nailed the way to architect and structure extensions now. Especially if you look up a lot of guides on how to build extensions, they really don't tell you anything about how to include npm packages, or distribute the extension in an automated way. Refined github does all of this in a really clear way that, I think, works very well. I recently used it's structure to rewrite an extension of mine and it helped so much.
