spogbiper··on Microsoft abandons personal AI chatbot race with Copilot reboot
I get the impression that it is, at least to some degree
spogbiper··on F-Droid 2.0
On my Pixel I don't even open the Play store for this

Settings, System, Software Updates, App updates

Bonus that any OS or Google services updates are here too

spogbiper··on WordPress: Unauthenticated path traversal leading to conditional RCE
> If you know what you're doing, WordPress fine.

Probably true, but for whatever reason Wordpress seems to attract an awful lot of people that do not know what they are doing

spogbiper··on I said no and Apple said yes
it really is like the meme..

Apple users to Windows users: I feel bad for you

Windows users to Apple users: I don't think about you at all

spogbiper··on Grand MS-DOS Gaming General MIDI Showdown
Some keyboards of the time period even came with a special "general midi mode" specifically for this, i recall the ensoniq TS12 I used at the time did
spogbiper··on Florida revokes permits for license plate readers on state highways
"On Monday, Aug. 31, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) issued a memorandum revoking existing permits for automated license plate recognition (ALPR) systems, commonly referred to by the brand name "Flock cameras," that are installed within the right of way of roads on the State Highway System."

Very first paragraph. "Flock" is basically being used like "Kleenex" here

spogbiper··on ChatGPT Is Throwing 404
downdetector.com is showing Gemini issues as well
spogbiper··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/apple-maps-changes-name-lak...

Apple updated it yesterday. If I were Google I'd turn down that refresh rate and let someone else take the bad PR next time

spogbiper··on I Don't Have a Smartphone
calling it "Google's war" is an interesting take. No doubt they have added some hoops to jump through and reduced freedoms, but Apple has been leading the charge against installing arbitrary software for decades.
spogbiper··on Harvest (IBM 7950): Supercomputer for cryptanalysis at the NSA in the Cold War
sometimes I wish I was born a few decades earlier. it would have been fun to work on things like this when they were new
spogbiper··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
Yes, I recall that not all hardware was supported (or well supported) although it wasn't a huge problem and I was able to find drivers for everything I personally needed. Video drivers that supported the full capabilities of the card were the biggest issue as I recall
spogbiper··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
I remember that campaign, me and a couple of college buddies convinced an IBM rep that we were an OS/2 User's Group and they sent us a crate full of Warp T-shirts, posters and buttons.
spogbiper··on Water Behind the Watts: The Hidden Risk of Powering Data Centers
This study is using water "withdrawal" figures rather than consumptive use. Hydroelectric plants withdraw tons of water, but it goes right back into the river it came from.

Edit - good information on this here: https://news.bgov.com/environment-and-energy/data-centers-us...

The "Consumptive Use vs. Withdrawals" section discusses the trouble with using withdrawal as a meaningful data point.

spogbiper··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
Kind of but not really. As I understand it some of the OS/2 dev team at Microsoft was involved in NT (after MS and IBM stopped working on OS/2 together) but they aren't the same code. The NT core is more closely related to DEC VMS than to OS/2. It can be confusing because the name OS/2 was applied to things that are NT at certain points along the way, and NT did have an OS/2 compatibility layer
spogbiper··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
I remember being a big OS/2 user/fan and thinking surely everyone would realize that Win95 was inferior. I was wrong.
spogbiper··on US data centers tripled annual water consumption to 17B gallons
Only 0.5 trillion gallons is precious water, the rest is just regular water
spogbiper··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
that would be nice, but unfortunately I think the supply vs demand situation is quite different this time
spogbiper··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
There's NDK which seems supported. It's been some years since I messed with mobile stuff but https://developer.android.com/ndk
spogbiper··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/mandatory_deposit.html

some form of mandatory deposit law has existed since 1790 in the US. other countries have similar laws. there is a very good chance the government already has a copy of anything that has been copyrighted

spogbiper··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
i remember the good old days of wide open terminal servers. used to dial into my local uni so I could then telnet into MUDs all over the world.
spogbiper··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
the information I have says they use 3-5x, which isn't even one order of magnitude
spogbiper··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility

spogbiper··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
once while visiting Peru, I had a vivid memorable dream that my cat was jumping on the bed. woke up to learn that I'd slept through an earthquake.

spogbiper··on On non-rooted Android 17, ADB uninstall of system apps fails
They aren't banning it. They are introducing a one time 24 hour waiting period. Not ideal, but not banning.
spogbiper··on On non-rooted Android 17, ADB uninstall of system apps fails
> install any operating system like you can with an actual computer

This is in practice only true of IBM PC compatibles these days, you really can't install any OS on modern Macs. Maybe you can on (some?) Chomebooks?

spogbiper··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
i've often wondered how Apple gets away with things like this, I guess its because they never gained the marketshare that Microsoft had
spogbiper··on Show HN: 18 Words

spogbiper··on Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week?
it can jump from wherever it is to your highly attractive ground line
spogbiper··on Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week?
my department manages a fleet of ~10k Windows PCs and it's pulling teeth to get the users to allow an automated reboot once a month for updates. they invent all kinds of silly ways to avoid it. your situation seems atypical.
