spider-mario··on Making a GTK application in Haskell, part 1
They build and link all Haskell libraries dynamically.
spider-mario··on SvelteKit 3
Right, it’s HTML. It’s a bit like JSX but not embedded.

> if you ever have opened Facebook or Instrgram, all that UI is compiled by a React compiler already.

Is that supposed to be a selling point?

spider-mario··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
Okular (KDE) and Evince (GNOME) both do.
spider-mario··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
I wonder what the author of the second article would have thought of wxWidgets in their “why” section. It wouldn’t have the drawbacks that they attributed to Qt.

watchOS 27 broke noise monitoring.
spider-mario··on What reversing, modernising old games tells us about the economic impact of AI
That raises the question of why do it anyway, and also diminishes the claim that it ported “the game” (either the abstract idea of it or the original closed-source implementation) and not those codebasese.
spider-mario··on Sonnet 5.5
You can read “a little bit” (i.e. “not too much”) into it (it does indeed tell you about the out-of-the-box experience), but e.g. being able to know when a fallback model has been used means that in terms of pure accuracy, you might still be better off defaulting to Opus 5.5 and re-routing to Sonnet 5.5 yourself when you get the fallback.

spider-mario··on When did Google get so weird?
In that pointing out that “A can’t be X, unlike B, because A is Y” is a non sequitur if B is also Y does not entail that A and B can’t be different in other respects?

Hypothetical you: “Bread is neither tasty nor disgusting (unlike maple syrup). It’s a bunch of molecules.”

Hypothetical hodgehog: “Maple syrup is also a bunch of molecules [so if you accept that maple syrup can be delicious, being a bunch of molecules can’t be a sufficient reason why bread couldn’t be].”

Hypothetical you: “If you don’t see a difference between bread and maple syrup, I don’t know what to say.”

spider-mario··on When did Google get so weird?
That’s not what they said. They said that the difference is not that.
spider-mario··on When did Google get so weird?
> Beliefs, almost by definition, don’t have much to do reasoning

There is nothing in the definition of a belief that precludes arriving at it via reasoning. In fact, one of the definitions in the wiktionary is:

2. Faith or trust in the reality of something; often based upon one's own reasoning, trust in a claim, desire of actuality, and/or evidence considered.

Merriam Webster:

3: conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence

To be fair, they also have “adieu” (farewell) to logic.

Or “smartphones”.
spider-mario··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
Or even, stuff it into several parallel vectors (structure of arrays instead of array of structures).
spider-mario··on Enjoy Every Sandwich
This comes across as projecting personal preferences as universally superior.
spider-mario··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
In fact tup does exactly that to the .gitignores it generates.
spider-mario··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
The section “How about the reasons not to use the wiki?” is written rather confusingly. It mixes points that apply to the wiki (“The documentation isn’t available locally when someone clones your repo”) and points that apply when not using the wiki (“Documentation edits get the same treatment as code”) without making it clear which one is which – you have to infer it yourself.

In fact, isn’t that the “M” in “MTP”?
spider-mario··on English: A vs. An
Also,

> The Obama analogy illustrates reference vs mention, but that distinction is orthogonal to the actual semantic disagreement.

It’s orthogonal to what you have shifted your argument to, but in the context of your original objection, I think it was an apt analogy.

spider-mario··on English: A vs. An
I never said it guarantees it. I said that when you discuss entire categories, you use one article in English and another in French, along with examples, and it is applicable to all three interpretations, ergo the distinction is immaterial. Whether it is factual to apply those statements to every single member is completely beside the point.
spider-mario··on English: A vs. An
Which itself is completely orthogonal to the point I was making. You can imagine I said “dinosaurs are extinct” and « les dinosaures ont disparu » if that makes you feel better.

> That is, at best, a highly informal proposition

That’s what it was meant as, yes, since you seemed to be misinterpreting what I was getting at (contents of the category as opposed to meta-commentary about the categorisation). The goal was to clarify, not to publish to an academic journal.

> Bare plurals can have generic or kind-related interpretations (the one you refer to as «category»); they do not entail reference to every individual member of the class: a mute cat can't meow, and a rotten apple is unlikely to be liked.

Irrelevant.

spider-mario··on English: A vs. An
“Cats meow” is “about” the whole of what makes up the category as opposed to parts of it. I thought it quite clear that that’s what I meant. If I ask you “could you please tell me more about Barack Obama?”, I would expect you to tell me about the person that the name “Barack Obama” refers to, not about the name “Barack Obama”.
spider-mario··on The senior engineer death spiral
Somehow, that reminds me: when I was younger and started learning programming, I had a phase where I seemed to hate most optional whitespace that wasn’t indentation. So each line would be indented to the proper level, but the rest of the line would look like this:

    SDL_BlitSurface((player1?smallcross:smallcircle),NULL,screen,&curpos);
spider-mario··on English: A vs. An
Interestingly, when you speak about a category as a whole, in English, you use the null article (“cats meow” or “I like apples”), whereas in French, you would use the definite article (« les chats miaulent », « j’aime les pommes »).
spider-mario··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
> The first thing that caught me off guard — and honestly, who would’ve expected this to be the memorable part — was IDE support, or the near-total lack of it.

I would have completely expected that.

spider-mario··on I don't like passkeys
Not as far as I’m aware? They of course require the target app to be compatible with the way they export them, but I don’t think they vet them manually. At the very least, on my phone, the apps it agrees to export to include Chrome and Bitwarden (the latter of which lets me export them further).
spider-mario··on I don't like passkeys
> I love not needing to deal with 1Password's autofill being flakey and having to CMD-C/CMD-V passwords/passphrases/OTPs on these sites.

But that requires that website implement support for passkeys, and is that easier than just implementing a login form that doesn’t break password managers’ autofill?

spider-mario··on I don't like passkeys
It’s a bit ironic that Apple is the one that lets you export them.
