speedylight··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
It’s ok when they steal the entire internet and everything not the internet they can get their hands on but distillation is bad.
speedylight··on Bill to block publishers from killing online games advances in California
I love California for these laws because even though their jurisdiction is technically limited, it makes no sense for the companies to not make the changes available nation wide.
speedylight··on Google plans to invest up to $40B in Anthropic
So Google gives Anthropic money which anthropic then uses to buy compute from Google. How does this end up screwing over regular people?
speedylight··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
At this point windows should be classified as a public utility and regulated as such. Microsoft has turned the most popular operating system on earth into an ad riddled and dysfunctional joke. Satya Nadella destroyed what would’ve been a stellar legacy as CEO of Microsoft by allowing all this crap to go on, chief among them is the war on local accounts.
speedylight··on Ireland shuts last coal plant, becomes 15th coal-free country in Europe (2025)
They might want to reopen it, oil prices spiked to $120 a few hours ago.
speedylight··on Ask HN: Please restrict new accounts from posting
No, Reddit is insufferable to use precisely because of this, try posting to any subreddit with a new account and your post gets removed because it’s too new or doesn’t have enough karma. Blanket moderation strategies like these make the UX horrible for new users and slows the platforms growth and reach.
speedylight··on Effort to prevent government officials from engaging in prediction markets
Predictions markets need to be outlawed, no exceptions, just erased from existence.
speedylight··on To understand our fascination with crystals, researchers gave some to chimps
Humans like pretty things, that’s why I have an urge to pet bears and tigers even though I know they’ll kill me.
speedylight··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
I have the M3 iPad Air… I won’t have to replace it for at least 4 years because it’s stupidly powerful but both of its hands are tied because of iPad OS. Apple needs to get serious and make a version of MacOS for the iPad otherwise these upgrades are meaningless for most users.
speedylight··on Netflix Backs Out of Warner Bros. Bidding, Paramount Set to Win
Can this shit cake be undone by a federal judge? No way a merger like that doesn’t violate antitrust laws.
speedylight··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
All EVs will naturally be more reliable than ICE cars because there are a lot less components that can break!
speedylight··on GPT-5 outperforms federal judges in legal reasoning experiment
Can we please file the idea of AI judges under the “fuck no” category.
speedylight··on Ask HN: Do you still use physical calculators?
I tried using my WolframAlpha in high school but I had no idea what I was doing and it felt way too complicated, but in college it is a game changer and I still use it to do school work. Totally agree!
speedylight··on Ask HN: Do you still use physical calculators?
FCC license exams I am assuming?
speedylight··on Ask HN: Do you still use physical calculators?
That’s so cool, I wish something like this existed in the states. That’s the kind of trust local communities thrive in <3
speedylight··on Ask HN: Do you still use physical calculators?
lol I did accidentally a verb yes, quite a frequent occurrence with me!
speedylight··on YouTube blocks background video playback on Brave and other browsers
On iOS you can get free background play with Youtube App by putting the video in picture-in-picture -> locking the screen, -> going to control center and hitting the play button. Don’t let Google know!
speedylight··on SpaceX in Merger Talks with xAI
It’s a damn shame that SpaceX is being entangled with the absolute trash that is X and xAI.
speedylight··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
I’ve been using a Mac for a about three years now, but every once in a while I use my old gaming laptop to play some games and every time I am reminded of how insufferable windows has become, using it feels I’m dumpster diving and the dumpster is asking me to sign into my Microsoft account. Apple gets a lot of shit for how they do things, but no one can deny that once you’re properly established in their ecosystem, it’s a phenomenal experience.
speedylight··on Ask HN: How do you use 5–10 minute gaps productively?
Have a cup of coffee in solitude and let your mind run wild.
speedylight··on Waymo halts service during S.F. blackout after causing traffic jams
Not really, they just treat it the intersection as if it were ruled by stop signs. It’s not always easy to keep track of who goes next but overall people can handle themselves pretty well in those cases.
speedylight··on Uber is turning data about trips and takeout into insights for marketers
So many freaking apps do this crap, Apple needs to implement a categorization system for notifications and allows users to choose which categories of notifications to allow. Anything other than essential notifications needs to go in the useless crap category.
speedylight··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
Except the five eras in the article are based scientific observations of how the brain changes overtime where’s yours are based on having a snide attitude.
speedylight··on EPA just approved new 'forever chemical' pesticides for use on food
States should step up and preempt this approval with a ban.
speedylight··on Workday to acquire Pipedream
I love when the jokes write themselves, pipedream indeed lol
speedylight··on UK's first small nuclear power station to be built in north Wales
So Rolls Royce makes cars, engines for planes, and nuclear reactors?
speedylight··on Türkiye will not sell rare earth elements to the USA
If they don’t even have the refining infrastructure built yet what do they have to offer the US ( or any other nation) that we can’t get from China? Rare Earth isn’t actually rare, what’s rare is the ability to refine it into pure elements.
speedylight··on OpenAI says over a million people talk to ChatGPT about suicide weekly
I think the chat interface plays a huge role in this because LLMs are more than good enough to make you feel like you’re talking to another person, so coupling that with a user interface that was up until a few years ago pretty much exclusively used to talk to other people is a little problematic… it is essentially hijacking the emotional response of talking to a real person through texting.
speedylight··on Fallout from the AWS outage: Smart mattresses go rogue
Nothing terrifies me more than those heated mattresses, you’re basically sleeping on a comfortable stove top.
speedylight··on I tracked Amazon's Prime Day prices. We've been played
Shopping on Amazon is a nightmare because it’s filled with Chinese crap and untrustworthy reviews, I almost always have to put several search filters just to see semi-reputable brands.
