speedylight··on Does anyone think the current AI approach will hit a dead end?
Hey, thank you for linking the blogpost it was super interesting and aligns very well with my own theories/framework in regard to how we might be able to build a truly intelligent mind. I honestly wish I could be involved in this kind of research because I think I can have a positive impact on the field, I just lack the technical skills (for now) to conduct the research.

Anywho, I think JN Research is onto something with the Adaptrons/Primite and hope you guys are able to take it as far as it’ll go.

speedylight··on Does anyone think the current AI approach will hit a dead end?
I think there will come a point where people realize that we will need several ground breaking research papers (not unlike the “Attention is All you Need”) in order build a truly conscious intelligence.

Language is only one aspect of a conscious mind, there are others like the ones that handle executive function, spatial and logical thinking, reasoning, emotional regulation, and many others. LLMs only deal with the language part and that’s not nearly enough to build a true AGI— a conscious mind that lives inside computer that we can control.

Intelligence is an emergent property that comes as a result of all distinct functions of the brain (whether biological or artificial) being deeply intertwined.

speedylight··on New research reveals longevity gains slowing, life expectancy of 100 unlikely
The only reason aging can’t be reversed is because we don’t know how to do it, but that doesn’t mean that it is inherently impossible to achieve. The only things that are impossible to do are the ones that break the laws of physics.
speedylight··on Are You Tired of AI?
I’m tired of not having a clear trajectory of where it will be in X amount of time and what industries it will impact, I’m studying CS and thought of it someday becoming an irrelevant degree is really disheartening and what’s worse is I’m not entirely sure what it means to be prepared if my fear is realized.
speedylight··on Self-driving cars begin testing on NYC streets
Well people don’t want to lose their jobs and their livelihood to automation, it is a scary prospect for many in the states where most people live paycheck to paycheck and cost of living keeps rising.
speedylight··on 4chan will refuse to pay daily online safety fines, lawyer tells BBC
I think eventually we will reach a point where laws like the Online Safety Act become so prevalent that it is basically impossible to comply with all of them simultaneously and still have a unified internet across the globe. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10 years or so every country has its own version of the internet only intended for their own people.
speedylight··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
Not just easier, they’re probably waiting until the cumulative value leads to felony theft charges.
speedylight··on The surprise deprecation of GPT-4o for ChatGPT consumers
Man people would beg to differ, HN wields a lot of influence in the tech community!
speedylight··on Ask HN: What do you dislike about ChatGPT and what needs improving?
ChatGPT is too nice/agreeable. I can’t trust any positive feedback it gives out because I can’t tell whether it is actually genuine feedback or if it’s just following an instruction not to be or seem rude. ChatGPT should be rude or at least unafraid to a challenge a point of view.
speedylight··on Scientific fraud has become an 'industry,' analysis finds
Whoever is profiting from this shit needs to be sanctioned by the Treasury, make their money useless.
speedylight··on Ask HN: Want to leave my job with nothing lined up
Believe me when I say that’s it is equally if not even more stressful to be unemployed and have nothing to lined up. It’ll feel great at first not having to work but you’ll be spending money without bringing anything in and sooner or later you’ll be needing to find a job in an unforgiving job market.

I would listen to your friends, stick it out until you find another job. In the mean time, try to make some changes like not working 10 hour days, maybe take a short leave of absence, etc… but quitting your job and not having another one lined up is almost always a mistake unless you a very large sum of money saved up or some other source of income.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

speedylight··on Ask HN: Why did my free tools site with 600 tools make almost $0 after 2 years?
Well there are lots of sites that are basically a compendium of tools like the ones you have and almost all of them are free to use. The one that comes to mind as being the best is CyberChef, but that was developed by a British intelligence agency.

I think the easiest way to increase revenue is to focus on SEO ranking and putting up more non-intrusive ads. You could also turn it into a phone and desktop app and charge people for offline access.

speedylight··on Researchers develop ‘transparent paper’ as alternative to plastics
We need a new class of materials that have plastic like properties but don’t take thousands of years to degrade or are impossible to recycle.
speedylight··on Ask HN: Is offering a one-time payment stupid?
I think you could get away with offering a one time payment if you restrict the time you’d supporting your software with updates.

So for example you have X Program that has a one time license which costs $100, you promise to keep updating X Program for let’s say 3 years… after that time passes, those people could keep using your program but they wouldn’t receive any updates without paying some sort of upgrade fee or you could choose not offer one at all if you’re looking for a clean exit.

speedylight··on Ask HN: Can you give tips on writing a README for project?
I’d suggest looking at other popular repos for inspiration. But at the very least you README should have information on how to run the program as an end user as well as a guide for developers on how to set up the dev environment such that they’re ready to go by following it.

Also a basic description of what your app is/does and what’s it’s trying to solve, a video demonstration also goes a long way. Make sure you use tags on the repo, it’s help with search discovery.

speedylight··on Ask HN: Moving to London from California
Can anyone tell me what London is like (from someone who lives/lived there)? Just overview of the life there, people, job market, etc.
speedylight··on Ask HN: Is politeness towards LLMs good training data, or just expensive noise?
I only have thoughts on your fourth question and in my mind the way LLMs work is they rely on the training data as it’s source information as well as how it formulates responses—In the same way that being nice to a person online leads to better results in terms of asking questions and such, it’s logical to conclude that LLMs would be more incentivized to produce more useful outputs than it would were you to talk to it like an asshole.

This is assuming that somewhere in the models weights there’s a strong correlation between being polite and high quality information.

speedylight··on Ask HN: How do I get hired with intermediate programming skills?
Thank you and yeah I have a website mostly done, just needs some finishing touches.
speedylight··on Ask HN: How do I get hired with intermediate programming skills?
As far as JavaScript both backend and front, I learned both by building several personal projects with SvelteKit and Vite as well NextJS. And yes, I know HTML5, as far as CSS I only really know how to use TailwindCSS not pure CSS syntax. It wouldn’t be hard too hard to pick it up because I’ve used it in the past, but that was years ago at this point and it seems it has changed quite a bit since then.
speedylight··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio
If only it didn’t cost as much as a used car to get max ram capacity I’d get one. It’s so ridiculously small for how much power it has.
speedylight··on Ask HN: How do I get a job as a web dev?
Hey, thanks for the reply. To answer your questions…

1. I haven’t applied to any just yet, I wanted to get my website up and running and clean up my GitHub and build a couple of projects specifically meant for a recruiter to look at — I figure that’ll give me the best chance, I also made a LeetCode account a couple of days and I’ve been working on problems since I’ve heard that tends to help. 2. I don’t have a degree but I am working towards a CS degree, though I am far away from graduation. 3. Knowing myself I would probably thrive in a start up environment but I definitely wouldn’t mind working at an established corp either. As long as it pays the bills and helps me move my career forward then I’m ok with it.

speedylight··on A $100 DIY muon tomographer
This may be a stupid question, but is this thing emitting anything or is it simply a passive detector? I’m mainly worried about any potential health risks.
speedylight··on Rare footage of largest uncontacted tribe in the world [video]
Your comment assumes that these tribes are not aware of us, I think that they have the exclusive right to choose when/if to reach out to the “civilized world”, we don’t have to make that choice for them.

We’ve seen what happens when we choose to meddle with these tribes when people tried to reach out to the Sentinel tribe. A missionary traveled to the island and tried to introduce them to Christianity (he was killed as a result), another group of people kidnapped six of the island’s inhabitants for the purpose of “studying” them. Eventually the situation got bad enough that the Indian government intervened and made it illegal to go the island by sea or air (they banned air travel because the sentinels would fire arrows at helicopters). We need to just leave these people alone and only observe from a great distance.

speedylight··on [dead]
Heritage foundation has already laid all of their cards on the table when they published Project 2025, which is essentially a blueprint to undo centuries worth of hard fought progress. I doubt any kind of hacktivism or controversy can change the minds of the people they are hoping to sway in the upcoming election. Everyone opposed to project 2025 should focus their efforts on ensuring that swing voters choose their side and that liberals turn out to vote like never before.
speedylight··on AI models that cost $1B to train are underway, $100B models coming
I could see the US subsidizing most of that $100B, just because they can, and more importantly, it would be the kind of tactical advantage that’s needed to make sure US tech companies stay relevant in a world where there’s a growing desire to breakaway from them in-favor of homegrown solutions.

You can use an Apple ID but it’s optional and it’s not tied to the user account unlike windows. A Mac OS user is basically like creating a user account on a Linux machine!
