speckx··on Cops are using AI chatbots to write crime reports. Will they hold up in court?
Yes. Until it's challenged.

speckx··on In "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," Feeding Your Family Comes First
Fifty years on, the film reads like sociology: assembly lines make the working class deranged, technology makes them irrelevant, and unemployment makes them hungry.
speckx··on Libraries will be able to buy ebooks instead of renting them at prices

speckx··on Former geography teacher Tim Walz is into maps
Walz, a former social studies teacher, has been an early adopter of GIS as a teaching tool. He has a deep interest in geography and GIS, which has been evident throughout his political career, from his time in the U.S. House of Representatives to his current position as governor. Walz was a speaker at the 2024 Esri User Conference in San Diego last month. You can find more information at https://mediaspace.esri.com/media/1_d2sqkrju.

speckx··on NASA Graphics Standards Manual (1975)
I have this book; as a NASA nerd, I love it!
speckx··on Cars Are Now Computers, So How Long Will They Get Updates? Automakers Can't Say
Phones are supported well beyond their average ownership lifetime. In stark contrast, automakers are struggling to work out how long their “smartphones on wheels” can be kept on the road.
speckx··on The Bullet in My Mother's Head
Thirty-seven years ago, Ryan Nourai’s mother was kidnapped, brutalized, and shot in the head. She would go on to have a son, with whom she shared some—if not all—of what she had endured. Now, after her death, Nourai writes how he came back to her ordeal, tracing her steps and even tracking down the men responsible—a tough read at times but a tender one.
speckx··on After CrowdStrike, Programmers Deserve Consequences
I think the issue was testing. Many organizations don't do enough, or the bare minimum, which is already insufficient as it's in some controlled lab that does not mimic the real world.
speckx··on Poll shows 84% of PC users unwilling to pay extra for AI-enhanced hardware
Poll with 26K+ responses can be see at https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/would-you-pay-mor...
speckx··on HE.net problem
I can't believe that NetworkSolutions doesn't have a list of significant ISPs by domain name or something. I would proactively work with significant ISPs before suspending the entire domain and interrupting their services.
speckx··on Block AI bots, scrapers and crawlers with a single click
I don't see the option to enable this on my Pro sites; however, I see it on my free sites.
speckx··on Greatest Westerns of All Time
The list is excellent; I found some I did not know or have seen.
speckx··on Greatest Westerns of All Time
Their #2 is my #1. What about you?

speckx··on Asian groceries like H Mart and Patel Brothers are reshaping America
I have both H Mart and Patel Brothers near me. While Patel Brothers is newer in my area and has only been around a few years, H Mart has been a staple for over a decade of shopping. Some items are cheaper, and some items are not sold at the trading US supermarkets.
speckx··on AI Doesn't Kill Jobs? Tell That to Freelancers
Slow death by a thousand cuts?
speckx··on What We're Working on in Firefox
I would like Firefox to be able to set extensions to run only on click or allow me to provide a list of domains, like Chrome does, so every extension is not running on every page. See https://support.google.com/chrome?p=enable_extensions and https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/option-to-allow-extensi....
speckx··on Why Do Orca Killer Whales Target and Sink Yachts?
Many captains now carry illicit firecrackers on board to throw at the whales. Some blast death metal on Bluetooth speakers. Others bash steel sticks against their hulls when orcas approach. Orcas have sunk at least three boats and damaged hundreds more. Nobody has died. Wild orcas, as far as we know, have never killed a human being. But sailors worry it’s just a matter of time, while orca biologists are anxious about captains arming themselves and taking things into their own hands.
speckx··on Utopia Must Fall
Utopia Must Fall is a browser game (for mobile too) that evokes the days of 1970s and 80s vector scan arcade games. There are nods to Asteroids, Gravitar, Tac-Scan, Space Fury and other more modern titles like Geometry Wars, with gameplay reminiscent of Missile Command but with a research and upgrade upgrade system. The password is CEASEFIRE if it asks.
speckx··on We're ending our Samsung collaboration
My last Samsung monitor was great, and it still is. The new one's screen died about a week after I got it. I had better luck returning it to the local store than dealing with Samsung support. The replacement, however, had the same issue about two weeks later. I feel like Smansung has a monitor quality control issue. I didn't even bother dealing with Samsung support. Instead, I gave up and returned it to the local store for a refund.
speckx··on Cultivating Control – Corporate Lobbying on the Food and Farm Bill
> The US Chamber of Commerce, which calls itself the world’s largest business association, was the biggest spender among entities that reported lobbying on the food and farm bill between 2019 and 2023. Other top spenders included the Bayer Corporation, a major pesticide manufacturer; American Crystal Sugar Company, which processes sugar beets and other agricultural products; Koch Industries, which manufactures fertilizers; and consumer food product makers Land O’Lakes and Mars, Incorporated.

speckx··on What We're Working on in Firefox
Who was this political activist?
speckx··on Classic Usenet posts on computer architecture, operating systems and languages
I recall my ISP doing the same eventually around the same time. At first, they stopped carrying binary groups and, later, all of Usenet.
speckx··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
I have a few old domains I registered in the late 90s, and some of them still have the mailto with my email, some I rarely get any spam, and others it's dozens a day. SpamAssassin does a great job of caching the spam.
speckx··on Dropbox filed an 8-K with the SEC for a breach. User OAuth, API and MFA tokens

speckx··on Doctor at Cigna said bosses pressured her to review patients' cases too quickly
Ugh!

> The "click and close" practice was common at Cigna, where doctors would quickly deny coverage requests by simply copying and pasting denial language prepared by nurses, rather than thoroughly reviewing each case.

speckx··on Japan nappy maker shifts from babies to adults
TIL: Japan now has one of the world's oldest populations, with almost 30% of them aged 65 or older. Last year, the proportion of those aged above 80 surpassed 10% for the first time.
