sparknlaunch··on Warren Buffett on newspapers [pdf]
There has been a strange trajectory of print and online media. You had print businesses that dominated the news market (now suffering). Suddenly the Internet came around and people's main source of news was via the web (now booming). Large print and online establishments do not personalized and local content.

People now want quality and relevant content. Therefore local print newspapers may be a lucrative place to be. Utilise the benefits of online, with the relevant content of local. Build a community.

Buffett is a smart investor. If he sees some value in newspapers then there has to be something there.

sparknlaunch··on Transit of Venus
For those wanting to view the transit and not permanently lose their sight, there are a few ways to watch it+. I personally prefer option 6:

1 use of eclipse shades

2 pinhole projectors

3 project a magnified view

4 project a magnified image through a closed-loop device

5 viewed directly when magnified

6 live webcast

sparknlaunch··on Let's get a little louder
Unfortunate story and only recommend that others walk away sooner and try not to provoke the situation. Alcohol is a dangerous drug and can seriously impair people's decision making. It is always best to walk away.

I always wonder what would happen if a man was subjected to the same treatment. Sadly I doubt anyone would take them seriously. But we should...

sparknlaunch··on What programming languages were used by the Soviet Union's space program?
>> "This language is also intended for using by non-programmers."

Hardly surprising the Russians created their own programming language (doubt this is available via open source). However positive to see they aimed it towards non programmers.

Are there any Drakon programmers on HN?

sparknlaunch··on Hacker News Rankings - interactive graphs of an item's fate
Really like. May help explain how some submissions trend better than others. Think that similar submissions should be aggregated rather than duplicated.

One interesting use for the data may be trending user stats - showing karma points from submissions and comments by day or week.

sparknlaunch··on Show HN: I love weird socks and I'm finally launching my lifestyle business
I can't disrespect those that go to the effort of setting up a business. So congrats on the venture. There are a few variations of this business, so maybe it works. However can someone explain if this business model is profitable? Socks and underwear feel like the last thing I would subscribe to on a monthly basis?
sparknlaunch··on SQL Injection Vulnerability in Rails
In laymen terms what does this mean? I understood SQL injections are one of the most common forms of attack, therefore why has this happened on such a popular framework? Is it user error or rails error?
sparknlaunch··on Those Who Have a Job, Want to Quit. Those Who Want a Job, Can’t Find One.
It's a tough one. The 80/20 rule can be applied to must things, and this is another.

20% of the labour force hold 80% of the skills and the perfect jobs. The remaining 80% battle it out or give up.

Now the numbers aren't exact and there are exceptions, but with challenges like this you need to adapt. This may mean entrepreneurship or taking a job you don't like or job benefits.

It's not ideal but balancing reality against the dream is hard work.

sparknlaunch··on SpaceX Dragon Ship Falls Back to Earth
Wow! Wonder if the weight of a canister and mobility of a plane may help in connecting the two together? Or make it harder? Awesome story.
sparknlaunch··on SpaceX Dragon Ship Falls Back to Earth
> "Scientists say that the vessel will splashdown in the Pacific Ocean several hours later in what they are describing as “a very challenging phase of the flight”."

Impressed how space junk etc fall to Earth and almost always land in the ocean. Not hard when 70% of the Earth surface is covered by water. However what is the level of accuracy? I assume that it is planned to aim for a large body of water and get within an x% threshold?

sparknlaunch··on The exercise habit
Unsure if Red Bull is the best pre gym workout drink. What about eating something? What about buying the drinks in bulk and keeping them in the apartment instead of going to 7/11 everyday?

Nevertheless humans loves routine and working effectively for two hours (coding, then gym) is a productive use of those early hours of the day. Many waste it in bed.

sparknlaunch··on Stop asking “But how will they make money?”
Agree with some of the article. However proving that the product can make money is fundamental and validates your business. It proves customers will buy from you.

User base is only part of the problem. The question remains the sane.

So maybe the new question is: "have you made money?"

sparknlaunch··on Join our hacker house for new YC companies
Thanks for the reply. Great idea to get like minded people together. We hope you plan to share the stories and results from the house. Will make interesting reading if all house mates end up making it big.
sparknlaunch··on Experiment: Living Without A Home Internet Connection
Great idea and can relate after two months without proper internet availability. I spend so much time just surfing and having a smart phone doesn't help. I don't have the self discipline just to stop. Maybe ISP s can offer a service tolock your connection at certain times off the day?
sparknlaunch··on The Apprentice – Lean Startup Builds Minimum Viable Product in Two Days?
Thanks for visiting. Is The Apprentice showing us the lean startup way? can we learn anything?
sparknlaunch··on Question - How do you get people to complete a market research survey?
Sounds like I have approached this the wrong way/order. I have built a very early prototype (early MVP). I was going to try promote this and gain feedback. What I should have done earlier is test 1 and 2. I have found getting attention and finding people online difficult. Is face to face better for initial evaluation? Is gaining traction easier once you know your target market?
sparknlaunch··on Question - How do you get people to complete a market research survey?
Thanks. Some good suggestions. We are in the early stages of product design. We have assumptions of the product however are looking to test this with potential customers.

Could we rework our survey and go out to who we believe are our target market? Or do we need to go a further step and just present the problem to anyone for initial validation?

sparknlaunch··on Question - How do you get people to complete a market research survey?
Thanks. Some good ideas. In terms of gathering feedback online - is survey monkey completely ineffective? Maybe a simple yes/no via twitter? However this lacks the detail. Has anyone had success with online surveys. What incentive did you use?
