sparknlaunch12··on Anatomy of a hack: 6 separate bugs needed to bring down Google browser
Where do many of these hackers come from? What is their background?

I ask, as wish to know at a high level what tools and code they are using to find and exploit Chrome.

sparknlaunch12··on Facebook Is Worth More Than ... - Interactive Feature
I have to agree with the sentiment - why is this an interactive?

Why not just stick all of the data in a single table or create a cool info graphic.

News sites also enjoy creating photo carousels. Why?

sparknlaunch12··on I'm Not Employable, But That's OK
> I’ve been programming on and off -- mostly off -- since I was 12 years old and I continually find myself in situations where programming is just downright boring to me.

> I will continue to program but, from now on, it will be purely for fun.

No need to put pressure on yourself. The market is crying out for talented and enthusiastic people. Don't know your job history but imagine if you're willing, there is a job or project out there to keep you motivated.

sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: Hacking recruiting - Coder's Coffee
> Help us reclaim the number one spot on Hacker News!

We look forward to you sharing the results of HN discussion. What's the back story?

I know many developers are building proximity/stalking apps but to me this is creepy. However this may well have appeal to help others find hotspots of activities or events.

Good luck.

sparknlaunch12··on Getting Real book is now free PDF
Awesome! Whatever their motives* this is a great resource. If you object to the email address I am sure you can unsubscribe later.

Oddily many paid ebooks are available free via the authors blogs. LeanPub and others make it really easy to roll up your blog into an ebook and then easily sell it via the usual channels.[1]

*Motives - boost awareness of brand to extend userbase, collect email addresses for future marketing campaigns, getting ready to release a paid version of a new or existing book, generosity etc

[1] - Podcast that talks about lean publishing... http://www.leanblog.org/2012/02/podcast-140-leanpub-com-part...

sparknlaunch12··on Interviewing at Google, Facebook, Foursquare, Dropbox, Fog Creek, etc
Great overview of the different interview styles being used. I cannot say I am convinced you always get the best people through.

I don't have any aspirations to interview at Google, but did stumble across an 'Google Interview' book at the local bookstore. It makes great reading.

WSJ did an article on Google interviews late last year, including answers. Here are the questions (click the link below if you want answers).

"1. What's the next number in this sequence: 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66 … ?

2. You're in a car with a helium balloon on a string that is tied to the floor. The windows are closed. When you step on the gas pedal, what happens to the balloon—does it move forward, move backward, or stay put?

3. Using only a four-minute hourglass and a seven-minute hourglass, measure exactly nine minutes—without the process taking longer than nine minutes.

4. A book has N pages, numbered the usual way, from 1 to N. The total number of digits in the page numbers is 1,095. How many pages does the book have?

5. A man pushed his car to a hotel and lost his fortune. What happened?"

sparknlaunch12··on Facebook Bankers Secretly Cut FB Revenue Estimates In Middle Of IPO Roadshow
No surprises here. I always cringe when I see 'mum and dad' flotations. These type of deals are always plagued with bias, mostly in the favour of the big guys.

The poor retail investors get sucked in by the allure of holding a brand name or having boasting rights. This thinking is dangerous when making an investment. I doubt most people would throw $1000 on a sports bet but quite happily to throw in more on buying a 'big name'.

sparknlaunch12··on Tipping doesn't make any sense
I am torn between wanting transparency and simplicity.

Transparency - I want to know what expenses make up the final price I pay.

Simplicity - I just want to pay one single figure.

This may explain the anger over airfares. People complained airfares cost too much. Then companies like Ryan Air broke down the costs. Then people got angry that the individual costs were unfair.

Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't?

sparknlaunch12··on Build the "USS Enterprise" in 20 years, for 1 trillion USD
Wow. This has been deeply thought through. I don't think the final design will mimic the fictional one, but certainty have to admire the passion. Hopefully some people with the money and the brains can get behind this.
sparknlaunch12··on Nine-year-old’s lunch blog shames school into making changes
Wow. Fantastic result for a young blogger. However I don't think the new meal looks that much better, apart from the sprinkle of salad.

Before: Pizza, Corn, Potato Chip, Cupcake

After: Pasta, Potato, Cake, Salad

sparknlaunch12··on Tipping doesn't make any sense
Being European I have never understood the tipping culture. However the Brits (and other European countries) don't have a tipping culture but have a '12.5% service charge' at restaurants.

I believe to avoid any ambiguity you simply have a all or nothing policy.

sparknlaunch12··on Man, stranded in the desert, makes a motorcycle from his broken car
Looks like something out of Mad Max or Water World. It sounds like a hoax just by the fact - why didn't the guy just fix the car instead of building a motorcycle? Also, don't think he followed the desert survival guide (1):

"Stay as hydrated as possible before going out.

Take along food that packs the most nutrition in the least size and weight.

Wear wicking fabrics with a UPF of at least 30 as a base layer, and take along one warming layer (wool or fleece) and one windbreak layer.

Many deserts are prone to dust storms - protect yourself.

Travel at night when possible.

Try to stay as warm as possible at night.

Be wary of nocturnal animals that can harm you."

Typically you are meant to stay with the vehicle.

sparknlaunch12··on Inventor of Google Voice now reinventing conference calls
Noise and feedback are big pain points. There are already products on the market that do this, but most leverage existing phone infrastructure rather than internet (eg voip).
sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: shortcutFoo is an effective way to learn shortcuts (Vim, TextMate, etc)
Interesting. Landing page looks clean and professional. However hesitant that there is much of a market for this. Do people actually want to learn shortcuts like this? Most learn directly in the application and/or refer to a cheat sheet reference?
sparknlaunch12··on Why airplane bathrooms have ashtrays
Not really surprised by smokers not being deterred by multiple warnings not to smoke on planes. Airlines rightly install ash trays to avoid smokers throwing cigarettes into the wrong place creating a real fire hazard.

Remember being on a long haul flight and passenger next to me would disappear to the lavatory clearly sneaking a smoke. He also snuck off to sleep in first class. We have rules in place for the minority of society who lack common sense.

sparknlaunch12··on The Toolbox: From Idea to Launch in 10 Hours
Thanks for sharing and spending time to document all the steps. Impressive achievement in such a short time.

Will you continue to build on this platform or is this simply a side project?

sparknlaunch12··on Things we've done wrong with our startup
Thanks for sharing. Some commonly spoken about issues. Good you have acknowledged these earlier rather than later. Liked the 7000 pivots comment.
sparknlaunch12··on I put my family business on Facebook. Here’s what happened.
The article is a cautionary tale about the myths around using social media to generate sales. There feels to be a belief that if I am on twitter, Facebook etc this will boost my image and sales. Reading the saga of others social media advertising is expensive and ineffective.

The pain is in first attracting the right people to click your advert. Then you need to get them to buy something. With such low conversion rates, the cost per click is too high for many to justify.

sparknlaunch12··on Ask HN: Can HN give me some pro tips for my first Meetup?
Smile, relax and be yourself. Be prepared to ask and answer the standard questions:

What's your name?

What you working on?

Why are you here?

How long have you been coding, learning, etc?

What are you looking to get out of the Meetup?

Do you know of any meetups?

Do you have a business card or how can I get in contact?

Conversation will usually flow around the above. Usually the setting is quite formal and don't be scared to interrupt and introduce yourself. Good luck.

sparknlaunch12··on How do I get started with Node.js
There are a lot more similar (and more up-to-date) articles on StackOverflow tagged under 'node.js'.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/node.js?sort=votes...

If you find a category and then look at votes - you can usually find plenty of information in the top few results.

sparknlaunch12··on I’m tired of the opportunists and their hackathons
>> "I have a Computer Science degree, but it’s been five years since I’ve written a line of commercial code, so now I employ very talented Developers to build product."

Where did you find these talented developers? Was it a hackathon?

While there may be some opportunists out there looking to exploit young coders, the vast majority are seeking to legitimately employ bright young/old talent. Well at least I thought so?

Has anyone had experiences of being exploited? Please share.

sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: A weekendproject, disposable web chats
Really cool. What is the front and back end?
sparknlaunch12··on Diego Basch is leaving LinkedIn
I wonder why he leaves 12 months after the IPO? Maybe there was a contractual reason?

sparknlaunch12··on Ask HN: Favorite HN threads of all time
A good place to look is at the HN lists page. Not exactly a curated list but you can usually find some of the more popular and 'hot' discussions here rather than the frontpage. Wadding through the top contributors usually lets you find some quality threads.

sparknlaunch12··on Didn't see this coming: The Goldman Sachs Github Account
There are a few other brands on there, including Walmart and Amazon:

https://github.com/walmartlabs

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/walmartlabs_kosmix.php

https://github.com/amazonwebservices

I can imagine Goldmans are using Github to acquire talent and new ideas. I am sure they have some complex problems and technology that needs fixing.

Stack Exchange had a discussion on this last year:

sparknlaunch12··on Mark Zuckerberg married
Why is he wearing a suit? Where his the hoodie? Seriously - money has changed him!

Jokes aside, not many can boast a week like that. Wow!

sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: My first web app, DailyDo.it
Wow - really impressive. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the future development.

How did you code the PHP and MySQL? Was this straight into notepad or did you use a template/tool?

Like others, really interested how you picked up the skills so quickly.

sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: My first web app, DailyDo.it
Like the design. Looks good for first web app. Do you mind sharing some background? How did you come up with product idea? What technologies did you use? What are your planned next steps for app?
sparknlaunch12··on World’s First ‘Wikipedia Town’ Goes Live Today
It's a nice initiative and certainly an alternative to sticking up an outdated poster everywhere. However I don't quite understand the benefit of a qr code versus just googling or looking directly on wiki.

I remember seeing a massive qr code on the side off a double Decker bus. Can codes that big be scanned?

sparknlaunch12··on Is Now the Time to Hire MBAs?
Okay, maybe not in the business school, but he was certainly within an organisation known locally and internationally for their business school.

He enrolled at Harvard in September 2002. He dropped out in 2004. He studied psychology and computer science. Harvard Business School is ranked 5th top MBA Uni by The Economist.
