spamalot159··on Show HN: OffChess – Offline chess puzzles app
Love it! The notification bar on my OnePlus 13 blocks access to the triple dot settings button on the top of my screen. ither than that it's clean.
spamalot159··on Ask HN: What audio/sound-related OSS projects can I contribute to?
M4B-Tool is super useful for people who enjoy audiobooks along with Audiobookshelf. M4B-Tool is getting reworked into Tone which could use some help at the moment.

spamalot159··on Ask HN: In what ways is programming more difficult today than it was years ago?
Depending on your CI/CD pipelines it could be a few dozen minutes - up to an hour, which totally breaks all productivity flow.
spamalot159··on The journey to Nintendo Switch
The Battle Royale genre (Fortnite, PUBG, ect.) is the biggest new genre I can think of. The 100 player last-man-standing game mode probably wouldn't have been possible without the advancements in networking speed and infrastructure in the last 15ish years.
spamalot159··on What ID3v2 could have been
m4b-tool is great! Excited to see how much of an improvement tone is.

I'm just setting up audiobookshelf this week and it seems promising. My hope is that they could eventually handle the m4b conversion in their app while also fixing chapter alignment with silence checking. Right now it still requires some manual work.

spamalot159··on Coinbase CEO tweets how they came up with Super Bowl ad, lied about it
I believe that the comment you are replying to is sarcastic.
spamalot159··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos?
How are you getting so many surveys? I can't seem to get more than one every few months!
spamalot159··on Show HN: Convect – Instant Serverless Deployment of ML Models
Very cool! I have run into the issue of deploying models recently. I see that this is using AWS lambda functions. How does this hold up with larger models (3-5gb)?

Trying to deploy a model to Azure Functions didn't play nice because of my file sizes.

spamalot159··on LaMDA: Google's New Conversation Technology
Yeah, I was expecting to be able to maybe play with it or at least see some real details. Not much here at the moment.
spamalot159··on Show HN: I made a platform to publish my Google Docs files as blogs
This is pretty cool! There is a whole wave of young people that are using Chromebooks and therefore Google Docs at school every day. They will be most comfortable with writing in Gdocs. I could see a product like this becoming very popular.

I mostly used MS Word to write essays at school growing up and to this day my ideas flow best when I have Word open on a desktop computer.

spamalot159··on Ask HN: Best Sites to Procrastinate
As a kid I killed all my time with random flash games. Even though flash is gone you can still access virtually every good flash game with flashpoint - https://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/
spamalot159··on AI learns to play Hill Climb Racing
This was such an addicting game! I totally forgot about it. Thanks for sharing.
spamalot159··on Twitter Said It Restricted Palestinian Writer's Account by Accident
This is the problem with three big tech companies. When they matter so much to everyday life and political life they can cause so much harm. One moderation mistake could be life or death in some situations.
spamalot159··on Deno 1.10 Release Notes
I am trying to expand my horizons from only node to other frameworks. I've seen so much hype around Deno so I looked into it the other day and I feel the same as you. It doesn't seem different enough from Node from a user standpoint. I also agree that the package system seems messy. For right now I'm going to steer clear and get out django and rails.
spamalot159··on AirGradient: DIY Air Quality Monitoring with Open-Source Hardware & Firmware
Very cool that this got posted today! I am visiting Chiang Mai this week from the province of Phichit where I teach English. I sent you an email at the support address.
spamalot159··on Amazon Sidewalk
You're right but it is pushing their advantage from the phone sector onto another and forcing out their competition in Tile. That sounds to me like monopolistic activity.
spamalot159··on Amazon Sidewalk
I disagree that it's hard to market. There are plenty of privacy conscious people that would pay extra. I see billboards every day for duckduckgo that advertise their privacy features. I think a privacy focused TV or IOT device would do well.
spamalot159··on Yellowbrick Kernel – Why Yellowbrick Data Warehouse Is So Fast
Just heard about Yellowbrick as an alternative to Snowflake for data warehousing. There are some big claims here:

> We have clocked a single CPU core sending and receiving 16GB/sec of data across the network in the MPP fast path, with time to spare. When using the Linux kernel, around 1.5GB/sec is the limit and the CPU core is fully loaded

spamalot159··on The Animal Is Tired
I'd say it's worth it to start now. Sanderson is writing at a blistering pace right now and doesn't seem to be slowing down.

Mistborn and Way of Kings are in the same universe but separate worlds. I don't want to spoil too much but there is some crossover involved.

spamalot159··on The Animal Is Tired
Brandon Sanderson is my go to recommendation for fantasy nowadays. Mistborn is a great place to start but The Way of Kings is the real meat and potatoes. He also links all these books together in the same universe and it's fun to notice the connections.
spamalot159··on Clubhouse comes to Android after more than a year of iOS exclusivity
Finally, I thought the days of being a second-class citizen on Android were over long ago. But apparently not.
spamalot159··on Over 96% of Apple Users Have Blocked Facebook from Tracking Them

spamalot159··on Show HN: A portfolio website simulating macOS's GUI using React
Someone should try to write a copy of this inside the VSCode editor in the site.
spamalot159··on Afraid to Google a thing because I don't want the algorithm to think I like it
It's frustrating that nowadays YouTube seems like it can only keep 3 or 4 types of videos that you like in its head. I feel like I'm watching the same thing over and over whenever I click on recommendations. I totally agree with you.
spamalot159··on Show HN: Curated learning paths that will help you be a better engineer
Interesting idea. I'll be curious to see what kind of developers use this. It doesn't fit into the normal area of learning software for people who don't yet know how to code. Your product isn't really a Lambda school type but it also isn't something $bigcorp can tell you to go get a certificate with either.
spamalot159··on Facebook threatens to make iOS users pay. Please do it, Mr. Zuckerberg
Maybe iOS users are less price sensitive than Android users and therefore this might be the perfect way to test out the business model.

It would be hilarious if they actually started making more money because Apple forced their hand.

spamalot159··on Facebook threatens to make iOS users pay. Please do it, Mr. Zuckerberg
I would love if more companies let me pay them for products instead of having them extract money out of me by using my data.

At this point I don't think I'd trust Facebook either way but there are a host of others that I would be happy to pay for service.

spamalot159··on Tesla Engineer Says Musk Overstated Tesla Autopilot Reality
To be fair to Elon, there were a lot of naysayers coming at him about Tesla and SpaceX but he has accomplished more than they ever thought he would. Most of the time, however he has exaggerated the timeline in order to keep the hype around him and his companies. I think he would do better to under-promise and over-deliver. Especially with a technology that could potentially cost lives if delivered too early.
spamalot159··on 80/20 is the new Half-Ass
The 20% people remind me of the "sociopaths" in the Gervais principle[1]. They are the people who are just waiting for the right moment to make a play for the top. Doing the rest of the 80% work is not visible or important enough to catapult them to the top. The 80% is left for the "clueless" group who does all the work but never gets recognized or moves up.

spamalot159··on Tesla privately admits Elon Musk has been exaggerating about ‘full self-driving’
I've been acquainted with a number of engineers at various autonomous vehicle companies and they are some of the most reserved people when it comes to the reality of autonomous driving. Many of them going so far as to say they would never use one for themselves now or in the near future.

I think when domain experts speak up like this we should listen. The autonomous vehicle technology seems like it has a long way to go.
