spaldingwell··on It takes more than practice to excel
That's because being a master at something requires something science can't quantify: you need to care.

I don't mean pedestrian caring. I mean a deep, rich relationship between you and what it is you practice. That caring translates into focus, attention, deliberation etc.

"Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted." - Albert Einstein

(PS - I'm hinting at Heideggers phenomenology here. You can watch a great documentary introduction to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-rmGy9gWvE)

"This is exactly what it is limiting the lifespan of Facebook"

Facebook has over a billion users and has been around for ten years. No other social network can claim both of those things. Don't know if it qualifies as an example of a "limited lifespan"

spaldingwell··on Ask HN: Do bootstrapped billion-dollar companies exist?
GoDaddy is actually not profitable.

In 2013 the company lost $199.88 million and in 2012 they lost $279 million .

(just a minor correction as I am not the biggest fan of GoDaddy)

Some pretty bad stuff that Buzzfeed found in the complaint: http://www.buzzfeed.com/sapna/tinder-sued-for-sexual-harassm...
spaldingwell··on Why I’m No Longer a Professor
I'm 27 years old, I have a high income and I really enjoy higher education. At this point I don't care about getting my MA. I just really enjoy education for educations sake.

But I don't feel like there are many places for me to go- auditing courses is the best I've come up with.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who has this "demand" ... I just wish there was a way to connect the supply and demand in a better way :)
